Chapter 7: The Visitor at the Door

The knock came again.

Three slow hits.

Not rushed.

Not angry.

Almost confident.

Like whoever was standing outside already knew they belonged there.

Rachel looked at me.

Her face had lost all color.

“Don’t open it.””

The fear in her voice made my stomach tighten.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

“Rachel.””

She looked at the door.

Then whispered:

“Vanessa.””

I felt every muscle in my body tense.

Of course it was her.

She always seemed to arrive right when the truth started coming out.

I stepped toward the door.

Rachel grabbed my arm.

“James, please.””

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m trying to keep you alive.””

Those words stopped me.

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, Vanessa knocked again.

“Rachel?””

Her voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

“Open the door.””

I stared at the woman on the other side.

The same woman who had stood in a wedding dress hours earlier.

The same woman who had looked at me and promised forever.

Now she was outside a house full of secrets.

I opened the door.

Vanessa stood there.

No tears.

No makeup running.

No sign of regret.

She looked composed.

Almost relieved.

“James.””

I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.

“You have five seconds to explain why you’re here.””

She looked past me.

“She told you.””

I didn’t respond.

Her eyes narrowed.

“Rachel told you everything?””

“Not everything.””

Vanessa sighed.

“Of course she didn’t.””

That angered me more than anything.

“You’re really going to stand there and act like you’re the victim?””

“I’m trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

“Because everyone knows you’re walking into something you don’t understand.””

“You attacked my daughter.””

Her expression changed slightly.

A flicker.

Not guilt.

Annoyance.

“James, Lily is confused.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Don’t talk about her like she’s the problem.””

“She’s been manipulated.””

“By who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was the first time I saw uncertainty.

And I used it.

“Who?””

She looked away.

“By someone who wants to destroy me.””

“Emily?””

The moment I said my wife’s name, Vanessa went still.

That told me everything.

“You knew she was investigating you.””

Vanessa looked back at me.

“You have no idea what Emily was doing.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

“Tell me the truth.””

Her jaw tightened.

“You don’t want the truth.””

“Yes, I do.””

“No, James. You want the version that lets you keep loving everyone.””

I stepped closer.

“Try me.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked angry.

“She lied to you.””

“My wife?””

“Yes.””

The word hit me.

“You don’t get to speak about her.””

“I knew Emily.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa’s eyes stayed on mine.

“I knew her before you.””

The world seemed to slow down.

“What are you talking about?””

“I knew who she was.””

“You never met her.””

Vanessa smiled slightly.

And that smile made my skin crawl.

“Are you sure?””

A thousand memories rushed through my head.

Every conversation.

Every coincidence.

Every moment Vanessa seemed to understand my life too quickly.

“Where did you meet her?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she said:

“Ask Rachel what happened three months before Emily died.””

I turned.

Rachel was standing inside the doorway.

She looked terrified.

Vanessa noticed.

“Still hiding behind him?””

Rachel whispered:

“Leave.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“After everything I did for you?””

My head snapped toward Rachel.

“What did she mean?””

Rachel looked down.

Vanessa smiled.

“Ask her.””

“Rachel.””

She started crying.

“I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

Vanessa took a step back.

“You’ll find out soon enough.””

Then she looked toward the house.

Toward where Lily was.

My entire body reacted.

“You stay away from my daughter.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“She’s not just your daughter.””

The words felt like a threat.

“What does that mean?””

She didn’t answer.

She walked back toward her car.

But before she opened the door, she turned.

“James, there is something Emily never told you.””

I stared.

“What?””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“Lily wasn’t the only thing she left behind.””

Then she drove away.

I stood there.

Frozen.

Because for the first time since Emily died…

I wondered if I had ever truly known my wife.

That night, I barely slept.

Every sound woke me.

Every shadow made me look toward Lily’s room.

At 3:17 in the morning, I heard footsteps.

I grabbed the baseball bat beside my bed.

I walked down the hallway slowly.

“Daddy?””

I stopped.

It was Lily.

She was standing there holding her blanket.

“What happened?””

She looked scared.

“I had a dream.””

I put the bat down.

“What kind of dream?””

She looked at the floor.

“Mommy was crying.””

My heart hurt.

“What did she say?””

Lily looked up.

“She said you have to find the red folder.””

I froze.

“What red folder?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did Mommy say anything else?””

Lily nodded.

“She said, ‘Don’t let him trust the wrong person.’”

I sat down.

Because those words weren’t random.

They were Emily.

The next morning, I went through everything.

Every drawer.

Every closet.

Every place Emily had kept important things.

And then I found it.

Hidden behind an old picture frame.

A small red folder.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

And one letter.

The first line made my heart stop.

*James, if you found this, it means I was right not to trust everyone around us.*

I kept reading.

And then I saw the name.

The person Emily had been investigating.

The person connected to Vanessa.

The person who had been hiding behind everyone else.

I dropped the letter.

Because it wasn’t Rachel.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

May you like

It was someone I had invited into my home.

Someone Lily called family.
