Chapter 10: The Betrayal I Never Saw Coming
“James?””
That voice echoed through the phone.
I knew it.
I had heard it laugh at my dinner table.
I had heard it comfort me during the darkest moments of my life.
I had heard it promise me that Lily would always be protected.
Marcus.
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Where is Rachel?””
Silence.
Not the silence of confusion.
The silence of someone deciding what lie to tell.
“James, listen to me.””
My heart dropped.
“Where is Rachel?””
“You need to calm down.””
That sentence almost made me lose control.
Nobody says “calm down” when they have nothing to hide.
“Marcus.””
My voice became quiet.
“Where is my daughter?””
Another pause.
And that was when I knew.
He knew.
“James…”
“Where is Lily?””
“I don’t know.””
I laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
“You’re lying.””
“I’m trying to help you.””
“Stop saying that.””
“James—”
“No.””
I grabbed my jacket.
“You don’t get to use those words anymore.””
I ended the call.
Then I called my brother.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
My heart started pounding.
I grabbed my keys and drove.
Every red light felt like it lasted forever.
Every second felt like I was losing time.
Because there was one thought I couldn’t escape.
Lily.
My little girl.
The person I should have protected from the beginning.
I reached my brother’s house and ran inside.
The front door was open.
That was wrong.
“Lily?””
Nothing.
I searched the living room.
The kitchen.
The bedrooms.
Empty.
Then I saw something on the table.
A piece of paper.
My hands shook as I picked it up.
Three words.
*She’s with me.*
Underneath was a signature.
Marcus.
I couldn’t breathe.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered immediately.
“Where is she?””
A woman’s voice responded.
“James.””
Vanessa.
My entire body went cold.
“Where is my daughter?””
“She’s safe.””
“You touched her?””
“No.””
“Then why is she with you?””
A pause.
“She came willingly.””
I stared at the note.
“No.””
“She knows me.””
“She’s six years old.””
“She knows I loved her.””
I felt rage burning through me.
“You hurt her.””
“I made mistakes.””
“You destroyed her dress.””
“I lost control.””
“You scared her.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa said something unexpected.
“I never wanted to hurt Lily.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I wanted what Emily had.””
My breathing stopped.
“What does that mean?””
“You still don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Vanessa’s voice changed.
For the first time, she sounded tired.
“I wanted a family.””
“You built one by destroying mine.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
“James, Emily wasn’t the perfect person you think she was.””
I closed my eyes.
Not this again.
“Stop using my wife to justify what you did.””
“She knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That Lily wasn’t just your daughter.””
I gripped the phone.
“What?””
Vanessa went quiet.
Then:
“She was the key.””
“To what?””
“The truth about Emily.””
I felt a chill.
“You keep talking about Emily.””
“Because she started this.””
“No.””
“She hid things from you.””
“She protected us.””
“She controlled everything.””
I wanted to believe Vanessa was lying.
I needed to.
But too many secrets existed now.
Too many people had betrayed me.
“Where is Lily?””
“I’ll tell you.””
“Now.””
“But you need to come alone.””
My jaw tightened.
“Why?””
“Because if Marcus gets there first, you’ll never know what Emily found.””
I looked around.
Every person in my life had become a question mark.
“Where?””
She gave me an address.
An old farmhouse outside town.
Then she said:
“James?””
“What?””
“Bring Emily’s necklace.””
The call ended.
The farmhouse was abandoned.
At least it looked that way.
Broken fence.
Overgrown grass.
Old wooden porch.
I parked and stepped out.
My hand stayed near my pocket.
Not because I expected a fight.
Because I no longer knew who I could trust.
The front door opened.
Vanessa stood there.
No makeup.
No wedding dress.
No perfect smile.
Just a woman who looked exhausted.
“Where is Lily?””
“She’s inside.””
I pushed past her.
“James.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“You need to understand something.””
“I understand enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
I turned around.
“You hurt my daughter.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Because I was desperate.””
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
“No.””
She swallowed.
“It doesn’t.””
I found Lily in the back room.
She was sitting on a couch.
The second she saw me, she ran.
“Daddy!””
I caught her.
Held her.
Checked her face.
Her arms.
Everything.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
“I’m okay.””
“Did she hurt you?””
Lily looked at Vanessa.
Then shook her head.
“No.””
That confused me.
“Sweetheart?””
“She was scared.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What?””
Lily held onto my jacket.
“She was scared too.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa sat down.
“She’s right.””
I stared at her.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.””
“Good.””
“But I need you to hear the truth.””
I didn’t answer.
She pulled out a folder.
Not red.
Black.
Inside were documents.
Old ones.
Very old.
“This is why Emily was investigating.””
I looked down.
The first page was a legal document.
The second was a bank record.
The third…
Was a birth certificate.
I froze.
“Whose is this?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Lily’s.””
My eyes scanned the paper.
Then stopped.
Because something was wrong.
May you like
The name listed as the father…
was not mine.
