Chapter 12: The Last Person I Expected

I moved before I even knew I was moving.

I grabbed Lily and pulled her behind me.

The shadow stepped forward.

The moonlight from the window revealed a face.

A face I knew.

A face I trusted.

A face I never thought I would see standing there.

Rachel.

My voice barely worked.

“Rachel?””

She looked different.

Not like the woman who cried in my kitchen.

Not like the woman who held Lily after Emily’s funeral.

She looked desperate.

“James.””

“What are you doing?””

Her eyes went to the necklace.

“I need it.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Please.””

“You brought me here?””

“No.””

“You knew Vanessa was coming?””

“No.””

“Then why are you here?””

Rachel looked at Lily.

And that was when I saw it.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not greed.

Fear.

“Because if I don’t get that necklace, Daniel will destroy everything.””

The name hit the room.

Lily looked confused.

“Who’s Daniel?””

I pulled her closer.

Rachel looked broken.

“Your mother tried to protect you from him.””

“By lying to me?””

I said it before I could stop myself.

Rachel looked at me.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“Tell me everything.””

She sat down slowly.

“I met Daniel years ago.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You knew him?””

Rachel nodded.

“He wasn’t always dangerous.””

“Then what happened?””

Rachel looked at Lily.

“He became obsessed with control.””

She swallowed.

“When Emily found out Lily was his daughter, she took Lily and disappeared.””

My heart stopped.

“No.””

Rachel looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at Lily.

The little girl who had called me Daddy her whole life.

The little girl whose first steps I saw.

Whose first words I heard.

Whose nightmares I comforted.

Biology didn’t matter.

Nothing could erase that.

But the truth still hurt.

“Why didn’t Emily tell me?””

“Because she knew you would fight.””

“I would have.””

“Exactly.””

Rachel wiped her eyes.

“She knew Daniel would use you against her.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Rachel, tell him the rest.””

Rachel looked at her.

“You don’t get to act innocent.””

“I’m not.””

“No. You’re worse.””

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“I helped Vanessa.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“But not because I wanted Lily hurt.””

“Then why?””

“Because Daniel threatened my family.””

I stared.

“He knew where my children lived.””

That changed something.

Not everything.

But something.

Rachel continued.

“Emily found out Daniel had been trying to get close to Lily for years.””

My eyes narrowed.

“How?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Through Marcus.””

My heart sank.

Again.

Marcus.

“He introduced Vanessa?””

Rachel nodded.

“Daniel used him.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Marcus would never.””

Rachel looked at me sadly.

“James, Marcus loved you.””

That hurt.

Because it sounded like the truth.

“But he was afraid.””

I looked at the necklace.

“What is inside it?””

Rachel looked at Lily.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Daniel tried to take Lily away from Emily.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“And proof that Emily never abandoned anyone.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Vanessa looked down.

“That was the lie Daniel planned to use.””

My hands tightened.

He wanted Lily to believe her mother left.

He wanted to erase Emily.

The same thing Vanessa had tried to do.

But why?

Why was Lily so important?

Rachel answered.

“Because Daniel inherited a fortune.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with Lily?””

“Everything.””

She pointed at the necklace.

“Emily hid the legal documents proving Lily is the rightful heir.””

I stared.

A child.

A six-year-old child.

Was being hunted over money.

My anger returned.

“Where is Daniel now?””

Nobody answered.

That scared me.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“James.””

I knew immediately.

Daniel.

“Where is my daughter?””

A quiet laugh.

“Still calling her your daughter?””

My blood boiled.

“If you touch her—”

“Relax.””

His voice was calm.

Almost friendly.

“That’s your problem, James.””

“What?””

“You always loved too hard.””

I said nothing.

“Emily knew that.””

“Don’t say her name.””

“She chose you because she knew you would protect Lily.””

A pause.

“But she never expected you to uncover the truth.””

I looked around.

At Vanessa.

At Rachel.

At my daughter.

Then Daniel said:

“Bring me the necklace.””

“No.””

“Then you’ll learn what happens when people refuse to give me what belongs to me.””

The call ended.

A second later, a message arrived.

A photo.

My brother’s house.

Empty.

And underneath:

*You should have protected her better.*

I looked at Lily.

Then at the others.

Because suddenly I understood.

This was never about the wedding.

It was never about Vanessa.

It was never even about the necklace.

It was about a fight that started before Lily was born.

And now Daniel had taken the one thing I loved most.

My daughter.
