Chapter 4: The Secret Emily Left Behind
“Lily has the only thing that proves who Emily really was.””
Rachel’s words stayed in the air long after the phone call ended.
I didn’t move.
I didn’t breathe.
I just sat there with the phone pressed against my ear, waiting for her to explain something that my mind couldn’t even understand.
“What does that mean?”” I finally asked.
Rachel sniffed.
“James…”
“No. Don’t say my name like that. Tell me what you mean.””
She was quiet for a moment.
Then she said, “Before Emily died, she found out something.””
I looked at Lily.
She was staring out the window, swinging her little feet back and forth.
She had no idea that the adults around her had built an entire storm over her life.
“What did she find out?””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“Something about Vanessa.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“Emily didn’t trust her.””
I felt my jaw clench.
“That’s impossible.””
“No, James. It isn’t.””
I stood up from the truck.
“You knew?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
“You knew my wife didn’t trust Vanessa, and you let her into my house?””
“James, please listen.””
“No. You listen.””
My voice came out louder than I intended.
“You watched me fall in love with someone my wife was afraid of?””
“It wasn’t that simple.””
“It should have been.””
I looked at Lily.
The little girl who had lost her mother.
The little girl who had already lost too much.
And I realized everyone had been making choices around her without asking what she needed.
“Where is it?”” I asked.
Rachel hesitated.
“Where is what?””
“The thing Emily left.””
Silence.
Then:
“I don’t know.””
I almost laughed.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
“You’ve been hiding the truth for years.””
Rachel started crying.
“I was scared.””
“Of Vanessa?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
Her answer came quietly.
“Of losing Lily.””
That stopped me.
“What?””
“James, after Emily died, you were broken. You barely slept. You barely ate. You were trying to be a father while grieving the love of your life.””
I looked down.
Because she was right.
There were months after Emily’s death where I felt like I was walking through fog.
“I thought you needed help,” Rachel continued.
“And Vanessa was there.””
“She was there because you helped her.””
Rachel didn’t deny it.
That hurt more.
“How?””
“She started asking questions about Emily.””
“What kind of questions?””
“About her work. Her things. Her journals.””
My blood ran cold.
“Why?””
Rachel whispered:
“Because Emily found something before she died.””
I felt a chill.
“What?””
“I don’t know all of it.””
“Rachel.””
“I swear.””
The frustration burned through me.
“Then tell me what you do know.””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“Emily kept a small box.””
“A box?””
“Yes.””
“What was inside?””
“She never told me everything.””
“Then why are you telling me any of this?””
“Because I saw what Vanessa did yesterday.””
Rachel’s voice cracked.
“And I realized I helped create this.””
I looked back at my house.
A place that was supposed to be safe.
A place where my daughter should have felt protected.
“When did Vanessa start asking about the box?””
Rachel answered immediately.
“Three weeks after Emily died.””
Three weeks.
Before I even started thinking about moving on.
Before I even knew Vanessa existed.
My hands curled into fists.
“Rachel, where is the box?””
“I think Lily has it.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Emily trusted Lily.””
“She was three years old.””
“She trusted her anyway.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It will when you find the necklace.””
I frowned.
“What necklace?””
“The one Emily gave Lily before she died.””
I looked toward my daughter.
The necklace.
Of course.
The small silver necklace with a tiny heart pendant.
Lily wore it every day until recently.
Then suddenly, she stopped.
Because Vanessa told her it was old.
Because Vanessa told her she needed to stop living in the past.
I ended the call.
My hands were shaking.
“Daddy?””
I turned around.
Lily was standing outside the truck.
She looked scared.
I immediately softened my voice.
“What’s wrong, baby?””
“Are you mad?””
“No.””
“Are you mad at Rachel?””
I paused.
“How do you know we talked about Rachel?””
Lily looked down.
“She called Vanessa before.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“She told Vanessa I was asking questions.””
I walked closer.
“Lily, sweetheart, what are you talking about?””
She touched the necklace she wasn’t wearing.
Then she whispered:
“Vanessa told me if I ever showed you Mommy’s necklace, bad things would happen.””
I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.
“Where is the necklace?””
Lily looked toward the house.
“In my room.””
We walked inside.
Slowly.
Every step felt heavier.
Lily went straight to her closet.
She moved some stuffed animals.
Then pulled out an old pink backpack.
“I kept it here because Vanessa couldn’t find it.””
I stared at her.
“You hid it?””
She nodded.
“She was looking for it.””
My voice dropped.
“Why?””
Lily reached inside the bag.
And pulled out the necklace.
But something was different.
The pendant was open.
I had never seen it open before.
Inside was a tiny folded piece of paper.
My heart started pounding.
“Lily…”
She looked at me.
“Mommy said only you could read it.””
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Three words were written.
Three words that changed everything.
*“Trust no one.””*
Then underneath was a date.
The date Emily died.
And below that…
A name.
Not Vanessa.
Not Rachel.
Someone else.
May you like
Someone I knew.
Someone I had never suspected.
