Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Plan

I stared at the name written inside Emily’s necklace.

For almost a full minute, I convinced myself I was reading it wrong.

Because there are some names your brain refuses to accept.

The ink blurred.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“No.””

Lily looked up.

“Daddy?””

I quickly folded the note.

“Nothing, sweetheart.””

But she knew.

Children always know when adults are lying.

“Is Mommy okay?””

That question broke me.

I crouched down.

“Your mommy loved you.””

“I know.””

“She loved you more than anything.””

“Then why did she leave?””

I closed my eyes.

Because there was no answer that would make a child understand death.

“I don’t know, baby.””

She looked at the necklace.

“Did she know Vanessa was bad?””

I swallowed.

“I think she knew something.””

Lily hugged herself.

“She tried to tell me.””

My head snapped up.

“What?””

“She told me before.””

“When?””

“A long time ago.””

“Before she died?””

Lily nodded.

I sat beside her.

“Tell Daddy.””

She stared at the floor.

“Mommy told me that if a person ever tried to make me forget her, I should remember that love doesn’t disappear.””

My heart shattered.

Because Emily knew.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

Enough to leave warnings for the people she loved.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Vanessa.

*We need to talk. I know you found something.*

My blood ran cold.

“How would she know?””

Then another message came.

*James, please. Don’t make the same mistake Emily made.*

I stared at those words.

Same mistake Emily made.

I felt anger rise.

I called her.

She answered immediately.

“James.””

“What did you do?””

Silence.

“What did you do to my wife?””

“Nothing.””

“You knew about the necklace.””

Another pause.

That pause told me everything.

“How long have you known?””

Vanessa sighed.

“Longer than you.””

I gripped the phone.

“You used me.””

“No.””

“You got close to my daughter because of Emily.””

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I laughed.

“You cut my daughter’s dress.””

“I lost control.””

“You told her to forget her mother.””

“She needs to accept reality.””

My entire body went still.

“Reality?””

“Yes.””

“And what reality is that?””

Her voice became colder.

“That Emily wasn’t the person you thought she was.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“What?””

“You’re so obsessed with protecting her memory that you never asked questions.””

“Because I loved my wife.””

“And that’s exactly why you were easy.””

I stopped.

“What did you say?””

Nothing.

She realized she had said too much.

“Vanessa.””

She stayed quiet.

“You didn’t love me.””

“James…”

“You needed me.””

“Please listen.””

“No.””

I hung up.

But now I had more questions than answers.

I needed to know what Emily discovered.

And I needed to know who else was involved.

That evening, Marcus came over.

I showed him the note.

His face changed when he saw the name.

“You’re kidding.””

“I wish I was.””

He looked at me.

“James, are you sure?””

“Yes.””

Marcus ran a hand through his hair.

“This is bigger than Vanessa.””

“I know.””

“No, I mean bigger.””

He pointed at the name.

“This person has access to everything.””

I looked toward Lily’s bedroom.

The door was slightly open.

She was asleep.

Finally safe.

At least for tonight.

“I need to find the truth.””

Marcus nodded.

“Then we start with Emily.””

We spent the next few hours going through old things.

Photos.

Documents.

Emails.

Anything connected to Emily.

Then Marcus found something.

“James.””

I walked over.

“What?””

He held up an old laptop.

“Where did this come from?””

I frowned.

“That was Emily’s.””

“You still had it?””

“I thought it was broken.””

Marcus opened it.

The screen flickered.

A password appeared.

I stared at it.

“What now?””

Then I remembered something.

Emily had one phrase she always used.

A phrase she told Lily when she was scared.

I typed it.

The laptop opened.

There were only three folders.

One was empty.

One contained pictures.

The last one was labeled:

*FOR JAMES ONLY.*

My heart stopped.

I opened it.

Inside was one video.

Recorded two days before Emily died.

I clicked play.

Emily appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But still smiling.

“James…”

I covered my mouth.

Hearing her voice again after all these years felt impossible.

“If you’re watching this, something happened.””

I stared.

The room disappeared.

It was just me and my wife.

“First, I need you to know I love you.””

My eyes filled.

“But I need you to listen carefully.””

Emily looked nervous.

“I was wrong about trusting certain people.””

She paused.

“I thought I had more time.””

The video shook slightly.

Then Emily said something that made my heart stop.

“James, Vanessa is not the biggest danger.””

Marcus looked at me.

The same fear appeared on his face.

Emily continued.

“The person you need to be careful of is the one who will pretend they’re saving you.””

Then the screen went black.

The video ended.

But one thing remained.

One final frame appeared before disappearing.

A photograph.

Emily standing outside our house.

May you like

With someone beside her.

Someone who had been there the entire time.
