Thinking

Chapter 3: The Woman I Thought I Knew

I stared at that message until my eyes hurt.

Unknown number.

No name.

No explanation.

Just one sentence.

If you think Vanessa is the only person who has been lying to you, you’re wrong.

At first, I thought it was some cruel joke.

Maybe someone from the wedding.

Maybe someone trying to create more chaos.

But deep down, I knew.

Something was wrong.

The next morning, I didn’t go to work.

I didn’t care about emails.

I didn’t care about meetings.

My daughter needed me.

And for the first time in a long time, I realized I had been so focused on building a new family that I forgot to protect the one I already had.

Lily was sitting at the kitchen table eating pancakes when I walked in.

She looked up.

“Are you still my daddy?””

That question hurt worse than anything Vanessa had done.

I sat beside her.

“Always.””

“Even if you don’t marry Vanessa?””

“Especially then.””

She smiled a little.

Then she pushed her plate away.

“Can I tell you something else?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

She looked nervous.

“Vanessa made me practice.””

“Practice what?””

“What to say if you asked why I was sad.””

My stomach dropped.

“What did she tell you to say?””

“That I was tired.””

I felt sick.

A child shouldn’t have rehearsed excuses for being hurt.

A child should worry about cartoons and homework.

Not protecting adults.

I reached across the table and held her hand.

“Lily, did Vanessa ever hurt you before yesterday?””

She looked down.

Then nodded.

“How many times?””

She whispered:

“I don’t know.””

I had to take a breath.

“Tell me everything you remember.””

She talked slowly.

Little pieces.

Moments I had ignored.

The time she stopped wanting to sleep over at Vanessa’s sister’s house.

The time she suddenly became afraid of being alone with Vanessa.

The time she stopped wearing the necklace with her mother’s picture because Vanessa told her it was “holding onto the past.””

Every memory was another crack in the image I had built.

Then Lily said something that made me freeze.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Vanessa wasn’t the only one who was mean.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

She hesitated.

“Her friend helped.””

“Her friend?””

Lily nodded.

“She came over sometimes.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know her name.””

My phone rang before I could ask more.

It was Marcus.

“James.””

His voice sounded serious.

“You need to come over here.””

“Why?””

“I found something.””

An hour later, I was sitting in Marcus’s truck outside my own house.

He handed me an envelope.

“Where did you get this?””

“Your mailbox.””

I frowned.

“Someone left it?””

He nodded.

“No stamp. No address.””

I opened it.

Inside were printed photographs.

The first one was Vanessa.

The second was Vanessa with another woman.

The third made my hands go cold.

It was Lily.

Crying.

Standing outside our house.

The picture looked like it had been taken through a window.

“What is this?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

I flipped through the photos.

There were dates.

Times.

Notes written underneath.

“March 12. Vanessa leaves Lily alone for three hours.””

“April 3. Vanessa threatens Lily after argument.””

“May 19. Vanessa destroys gift from biological mother.””

My breathing changed.

Someone had been watching.

Someone had known.

Someone had collected evidence.

But why?

Then I reached the final picture.

And everything stopped.

It showed Vanessa sitting at a restaurant.

Across from her was my ex-wife’s sister.

Emily’s sister.

Rachel.

My late wife’s family.

The woman who hugged Lily every Christmas.

The woman who told me she wanted nothing but happiness for us.

On the back of the photo was a handwritten message.

“Ask Rachel why she helped Vanessa get close to your daughter.””

I felt like I had been punched.

“No.””

Marcus looked at me.

“What?””

“No.””

Because some truths are impossible to accept.

Vanessa was one thing.

But Rachel?

Rachel knew Emily.

Rachel loved Lily.

Rachel had been there when I buried my wife.

She had cried with me.

She had held my daughter.

Why would she do this?

My phone rang.

Rachel.

I stared at the screen.

Marcus said nothing.

Finally, I answered.

“James?””

Her voice sounded nervous.

“Where did you get those pictures?””

My heart stopped.

“You know about them?””

Silence.

That silence told me everything.

“Rachel.””

She started crying.

“James, I can explain.””

Those words again.

Everyone had an explanation.

Everyone except my daughter.

I looked toward Lily sitting in the passenger seat, watching me.

“Then explain.””

Rachel took a shaky breath.

“I never wanted it to go this far.””

“What does that mean?””

“She promised me she would fix everything.””

“Who?””

Another silence.

Then Rachel whispered:

“Vanessa.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

Rachel cried harder.

“Because she told me she could bring Emily back.””

I froze.

“What did you just say?””

And then Rachel said the words that changed everything.

“James… Vanessa didn’t choose you because she loved you.””

I stared straight ahead.

“Then why did she choose me?””

Rachel’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“Because she needed access to something your daughter had.””

I looked at Lily.

My heart started racing.

“What does my daughter have?””

Rachel answered.

And the second she said it, I knew my wedding day wasn’t just ruined.

May you like

It was the beginning of something much darker.

“James… Lily has the only thing that proves who Emily really was.””
