Chapter 11: The Truth About Lily

I stared at the document.

My brain refused to process it.

The room felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

“What is this?””

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

That made me even angrier.

“What is this?””

“It’s the truth Emily found.””

I looked at Lily.

She was coloring on a piece of paper in the corner.

Completely unaware that adults were once again changing the world around her.

I lowered my voice.

“You’re telling me Lily isn’t my daughter?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Relief hit me for half a second.

Then confusion replaced it.

“Then what are you saying?””

“She is your daughter.””

I stared.

“Explain.””

Vanessa looked at the document.

“Emily changed the records.””

“What?””

“Before Lily was born.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of who?””

“Of Lily’s biological father.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Lily.

Then back at Vanessa.

“Who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She slid another photo across the table.

A man.

I didn’t recognize him.

“He was dangerous.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted control.””

I shook my head.

“This doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

Vanessa opened another folder.

Inside were messages.

Threats.

Court documents.

Evidence.

Emily had been fighting someone.

Someone I never knew existed.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because she thought telling you would put you in danger.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So instead she left me blind?””

“She was trying to protect you.””

The same words.

But this time they felt different.

Because maybe they were true.

I looked at the evidence.

Emily had carried this alone.

And I had never known.

“Who is he?””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“His name is Daniel.””

A cold feeling hit me.

“Daniel what?””

She hesitated.

“Daniel Carter.””

The name meant nothing.

Until it did.

I remembered.

A name from old paperwork.

A name I had seen on Emily’s files.

“Wait.””

I grabbed the papers.

“Daniel Carter?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He’s the reason Emily was investigating.””

I looked at the documents again.

Then something clicked.

“Marcus knew.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“How much?””

“Enough.””

I walked away.

Because every answer created another question.

“Why did you come into my life?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And for the first time…

She looked ashamed.

“I was hired.””

My body went still.

“By who?””

She closed her eyes.

“Daniel.””

The silence was unbearable.

“You were spying on us.””

“At first.””

I stared.

“At first?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I was supposed to get close to you. Find what Emily had hidden.””

“And then?””

Her voice cracked.

“Then I met Lily.””

I looked at my daughter.

“She changed everything.””

I didn’t know whether to believe her.

Because the woman standing in front of me had hurt my child.

But she had also just given me information that explained years of confusion.

“Why hurt her?””

Vanessa started crying.

“I thought if I scared her enough, she would tell me where Emily hid the evidence.””

My stomach turned.

“You terrified a little girl for information?””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t know.””

She looked down.

“I deserve that.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Lily walked over.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

“Yeah?””

“Can we go home?””

Those simple words broke through everything.

I picked her up.

“We’re going.””

As I turned toward the door, Vanessa said:

“James.””

I stopped.

“There’s one more thing.””

I didn’t look back.

“What?””

“Daniel isn’t working alone.””

I slowly turned.

“What?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“He has someone inside your family.””

I felt the same cold fear again.

“Who?””

She whispered:

“The person who has been controlling the story from the beginning.””

Before I could ask another question, the lights went out.

The farmhouse went completely dark.

Then Lily screamed.

Not because she was afraid.

Because someone grabbed the necklace around her neck.

I turned.

A shadow moved behind her.

And a familiar voice said:

“Finally.””

May you like

My blood froze.

“Give me what Emily left.””
