Chapter 6: The Face in the Photograph

I replayed the video six times.

Six times.

And every single time, I saw the same thing.

That final image.

Emily standing outside our house.

Smiling.

Holding a folder.

And beside her…

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had comforted me after her funeral.

Someone who had sat at my kitchen table and told me everything would be okay.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“James.””

I didn’t answer.

“James, say something.””

I couldn’t.

Because saying the name out loud would make it real.

Finally, I whispered:

“Rachel.””

Marcus leaned back.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“No.””

“Maybe she was meeting with Emily about something.””

“Then why would Emily warn me about her?””

Marcus had no answer.

Neither did I.

The next morning, I went to Rachel’s house.

I didn’t tell Marcus.

I didn’t tell anyone.

I needed answers directly from her.

She opened the door and immediately knew.

The fear in her eyes gave her away.

“You saw it.””

I stepped inside.

“You were there.””

Rachel looked down.

“James…”

“Don’t.””

She started crying.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

“When was the perfect time?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

“Everybody keeps saying that.””

I pulled out the picture.

“Explain this.””

Rachel looked at it.

Then closed her eyes.

“I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“I trusted Vanessa.””

I stared.

“Why?””

She sat down.

“Because she promised me something.””

“What?””

“That she could fix what happened to Emily.””

My face hardened.

“My wife is dead.””

“I know.””

“Then what exactly was she fixing?””

Rachel looked broken.

“She said Emily left behind proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Rachel whispered:

“That she had been investigating someone.””

The room went silent.

“Who?””

Rachel looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I swear.””

“Then why did Vanessa need the necklace?””

Rachel froze.

That reaction told me everything.

“You knew.””

“No.””

“You knew about the necklace.””

Rachel covered her face.

“I knew Emily hid something.””

“Where?””

“I didn’t know.””

“But Vanessa did.””

Rachel looked up.

“She found the necklace after Emily died.””

My stomach twisted.

“How?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then she said:

“She was already looking through Emily’s things.””

I walked toward the window.

Trying to control my anger.

“How did Vanessa even know what to look for?””

Rachel’s silence answered.

Someone told her.

Someone gave her information.

Someone helped her.

I turned around.

“Who?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not!””

“Then tell me one thing.””

She looked at me.

“Why did Emily write ‘trust no one’?””

Rachel went completely still.

Because she knew.

She knew that phrase.

And I saw it.

The fear.

The guilt.

The memory.

“Rachel.””

Her voice shook.

“She found out.””

“Found out what?””

“She found out Vanessa wasn’t trying to replace her.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel looked toward the floor.

“She was trying to erase her.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“What?””

Rachel swallowed.

“Vanessa didn’t want your daughter to remember Emily.””

I felt sick.

“Why?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Because Emily knew the truth about her.””

“And what truth was that?””

Rachel whispered:

“Vanessa had been planning to enter your life long before you ever met her.””

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Rachel reached for a folder sitting on the table.

She opened it.

Inside were printed emails.

Photos.

Records.

My name appeared everywhere.

Dates.

Notes.

Plans.

I looked at the pages.

And then I saw the first sentence.

*Phase One: Become someone James trusts.*

My hands went numb.

This wasn’t love.

This wasn’t fate.

It was a plan.

A plan that started before Vanessa ever smiled at me.

Before she ever met Lily.

Before she ever said my name.

Then Rachel handed me one more document.

“This is why Emily was scared.””

I looked at the paper.

It was a medical report.

But not Emily’s.

Someone else’s.

Someone connected to Vanessa.

And at the bottom was a signature.

A signature I recognized.

Because I had seen it every day.

The same signature on my wedding invitations.

The same signature on the marriage license sitting inside my house.

Vanessa.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“James, if you’re reading Emily’s files, you need to stop.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

The voice lowered.

“Because the person who killed your wife is closer than you think.””

The call ended.

And before I could move…

I heard a knock at the door.

Rachel looked toward the entrance.

Her face went pale.

May you like

Because whoever was standing outside…

She knew exactly who it was.
