Thinking

Chapter 13: The Last Lie

The photo on my phone burned into my mind.

My brother’s empty house.

The front door hanging open.

No sign of Lily.

No sign of anyone.

Just a message from Daniel:

*You should have protected her better.*

For years, I thought my biggest fear was losing my daughter.

I was wrong.

My biggest fear was realizing I had failed to protect her when she needed me most.

I looked at Rachel.

“Where would he take her?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Think.””

“I don’t know, James!””

Her voice cracked.

“He’s unpredictable.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“He’s not.””

Everyone looked at me.

“He’s been planning this for years.””

The room went quiet.

“People like Daniel don’t act randomly. They create backups. They have places they feel safe.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You’re right.””

I turned toward her.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel always talked about one place.””

“Where?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“His father’s old property.””

Rachel’s face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“That place burned.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not all of it.””

I grabbed my keys.

“Take me there.””

Nobody moved.

Then Vanessa stood.

“I’m coming.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

“I know Daniel better than you do.””

“You hurt my daughter.””

“I know.””

Her voice was quiet.

“But I also know how he thinks.””

For a second, I saw something in her face.

Not manipulation.

Not excuses.

Regret.

Real regret.

“Fine.””

I pointed at her.

“But if you put Lily in danger again…”

“I won’t.””

Rachel stood too.

“I’m coming.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“James—”

“You’ve hidden enough.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

The drive felt endless.

No one spoke.

The only sound was the road beneath us.

I kept seeing Lily’s face.

The way she grabbed my hand when she was scared.

The way she trusted me.

And I kept thinking about one thing.

She had spent months afraid.

And I never knew.

When we reached the property, the old farmhouse looked abandoned.

Broken windows.

Faded paint.

A place forgotten by time.

But Vanessa immediately noticed something.

“He’s here.””

I looked at her.

“How do you know?””

“The lights.””

I stared.

One small light glowed upstairs.

We moved quietly.

Every step felt like walking toward a nightmare.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, everything was covered in dust.

Except one room.

A room with fresh furniture.

Fresh pictures.

A room that looked prepared.

For someone.

My stomach turned.

On the wall were photographs.

Emily.

Lily.

Me.

Years of our lives.

Someone had been watching us.

Studying us.

Vanessa whispered:

“He kept everything.””

I walked closer.

There was a picture of Lily holding a stuffed rabbit.

She was four.

The photo had been taken from far away.

I felt sick.

Then I heard it.

A small voice.

“Daddy?””

I ran.

“Lily!””

I found her upstairs.

She was sitting on a bed.

Her hands were tied loosely with a cloth.

Not hurt.

Not injured.

Just terrified.

I tore the cloth away and grabbed her.

“Daddy!””

She buried her face in my chest.

“I knew you’d come.””

Those words almost broke me.

“I’m sorry.””

I held her tighter.

“I’m so sorry.””

Behind me, Daniel spoke.

“I knew you would.””

I turned.

He stood in the doorway.

Calm.

Smiling.

Like this was a normal conversation.

“You.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“She looks just like Emily.””

I stepped in front of my daughter.

“Stay away from her.””

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t.””

Daniel smiled.

“Emily made the same mistake.””

“What?””

“She thought love could protect people.””

I stared.

“She was wrong.””

“You killed her.””

The smile disappeared.

“I didn’t kill Emily.””

“Then explain.””

“She chose.””

I felt anger explode.

“You’re lying.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“She chose you over the truth.””

“What truth?””

He looked at Lily.

“The truth that she was never yours.””

Lily grabbed my shirt.

I ignored him.

“You’re not taking her.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“You still don’t get it.””

“What?””

“You’re not fighting me.””

He pointed toward the necklace.

“You’re fighting what Emily left behind.””

I looked down.

The necklace.

The proof.

The secret.

Then I realized something.

Daniel didn’t want the necklace because of money.

Not only money.

He wanted to erase the truth.

“What’s inside it?””

Daniel smiled.

“You’ll find out.””

Then the lights went out.

A crash came from downstairs.

May you like

Someone screamed.

And Daniel disappeared into the darkness.
