Chapter 9: The Last Witness
The private hospital room was silent.
Too silent.
Samantha stood outside the door, unable to move.
For twenty years, she had searched for answers.
Now she was about to meet the person who might know everything.
Her grandfather.
The man who created the inheritance.
The man Victoria feared.
Alexander stood beside her.
“You don’t have to do this alone.””
Samantha looked at him.
“I spent my whole life alone.””
Her voice was quiet.
“But I don’t want to stay that way.””
Alexander nodded.
Then the door opened.
An elderly man sat beside the window.
He looked fragile.
But his eyes were sharp.
The moment he saw Samantha…
he started crying.
“Eleanor’s eyes.””
Samantha froze.
The man reached out.
“You have her eyes.””
Alexander walked inside.
“Grandfather.””
The old man looked at him.
Then back at Samantha.
“I thought I would never see her child.””
Samantha stepped closer.
“Why?””
The old man looked ashamed.
“Because I failed.””
She stood silently.
“My name is Richard Hayes.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
Richard looked at her.
“No.””
His voice broke.
“You know my name.””
He pointed to her heart.
“But you don’t know what I lost.””
Samantha sat down.
“Tell me.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Your mother trusted Victoria.””
Samantha frowned.
“She did?””
“Yes.””
Richard looked toward the window.
“Eleanor believed Victoria was her friend.””
The truth hurt.
“Then what happened?””
Richard sighed.
“Victoria discovered Eleanor’s inheritance rights. She became obsessed.””
Alexander listened carefully.
“She wanted money.””
Richard nodded.
“But money was only the beginning.””
Samantha looked confused.
“What else?””
Richard looked directly at her.
“Power.””
The room became quiet.
“Victoria didn’t want to marry into wealth.””
He paused.
“She wanted to own it.””
Samantha remembered Victoria’s words.
The person who changed your life was not me.
“What about Charlotte?””
Richard sighed.
“Charlotte was forced into silence.””
“And Olivia?””
“Manipulated.””
Samantha looked down.
“So everyone was controlled.””
Richard nodded.
“Everyone except you.””
She looked up.
“Why me?””
Richard smiled sadly.
“Because Eleanor knew you would be different.””
Samantha frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Richard reached into a drawer.
He pulled out a sealed envelope.
“This is from your mother.””
Samantha stared.
“Another letter?””
Richard nodded.
“But this one was never meant for Victoria to find.””
She opened it.
The handwriting was the same.
My Samantha,
Her heart broke.
If you are reading this, then you have finally learned the truth.
She continued.
Remember this: your worth was never determined by the way people treated you.
A tear fell.
Some people will try to make you feel small because they are afraid of how powerful you can become.
Samantha looked at Richard.
Then continued reading.
The final sentence made her stop.
The person you trust most may be the one who knows the least about themselves.
She looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Richard’s face became serious.
“It means there is still one secret left.””
Alexander stepped closer.
“What secret?””
Richard looked at him.
“Your father was not the only person who survived that night.””
Everyone froze.
Samantha whispered:
“What?””
Richard looked at her.
“Someone else was there.””
“Who?””
Richard’s voice became low.
“Someone from the Collins family.””
A cold feeling spread through the room.
Samantha stood.
“Victoria?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He looked toward Alexander.
“Someone younger.””
Alexander’s expression changed.
“Who?””
Richard took a deep breath.
Then said:
“Someone who has been pretending to help you.””
The room went silent.
Samantha’s heart began racing.
“Who?””
Richard looked at the door.
And whispered:
“Your sister, Charlotte.””
At that exact moment…
the hospital lights flickered.
A message appeared on Samantha’s phone.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
Don’t trust anyone in the Hayes family.

And beneath it was a photograph.
A photograph showing Alexander meeting Victoria in secret.
