Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew the Past
Samantha arrived at the abandoned seaside café before sunrise.
The place had been closed for years.
Its wooden chairs were covered in dust.
The windows were cracked from years of ocean storms.
The only sound came from the waves crashing against the rocks below.
She almost turned around.
Every instinct told her to leave.
But then she remembered the message.
I know what your mother did twenty years ago.
Her fingers tightened around her phone.
She needed answers.
Even if those answers destroyed everything she believed.
A shadow appeared near the entrance.
Samantha immediately stood up.
A man walked inside slowly.
He looked older, probably in his late fifties.
His hair was gray.
His face carried years of exhaustion.
But his eyes…
His eyes looked familiar.
Samantha didn’t know why.
The man stopped when he saw her.
“You’re Samantha.””
She swallowed.
“Yes.””
The man stared at her for several seconds.
Then he whispered:
“You look exactly like your father.””
The words made her freeze.
“You knew my father?””
The man sat down.
“My name is Daniel Whitmore.””
Samantha waited.
“I was your father’s closest friend.””
The ocean waves crashed louder outside.
“My father had friends?””
Daniel looked away.
“He had many.””
Samantha’s confusion grew.
“Then why did nobody tell me anything?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he pulled an old folder from his bag.
“I promised your father I would only give this to you when you were old enough to understand.””
Samantha stared at the folder.
“What is it?””
“The truth.””
She opened it carefully.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Letters.
The first picture made her hands shake.
It was a photograph of her father holding three newborn babies.
The same three babies from the picture.
Olivia.
Charlotte.
Samantha.
But behind them stood another woman.
A woman Samantha had never seen before.
“Who is she?””
Daniel’s expression became serious.
“That is your real mother.””
Samantha looked up sharply.
“What?””
Daniel sighed.
“Victoria Collins is not the woman who gave birth to you.””
The world seemed to stop.
Samantha stared at him.
“No.””
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel pushed the folder closer.
“Your biological mother was named Eleanor Hayes.””
Samantha’s heart skipped.
“Hayes?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
The name felt impossible.
Because she knew exactly who Alexander Hayes was.
The billionaire who had walked into her home.
The man who looked at her like he already knew something.
“My mother was a Hayes?””
Daniel nodded.
“Alexander’s father was your mother’s brother.””
Samantha couldn’t breathe.
“Then Alexander…”
“Is your cousin.””
Silence filled the café.
Everything suddenly felt different.
The way Alexander looked at her.
The way he reacted to Victoria.
The way he noticed things nobody else did.
Samantha looked down at the documents.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Daniel’s face darkened.
“Because Victoria made sure the truth disappeared.””
Samantha looked up.
“What did she do?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he opened another document.
“Twenty years ago, Eleanor Hayes died shortly after giving birth.””
Samantha touched the paper.
“Died?””
“Yes.””
“What about my father?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“He was blamed for everything.””
Samantha frowned.
“Blamed?””
“Victoria told everyone your father abandoned the family. She told people he was unstable. Dangerous.””
Samantha’s eyes filled with confusion.
“But why?””
Daniel looked directly at her.
“Because your father discovered what Victoria wanted.””
“What?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“She wanted the Hayes fortune.””
Samantha stared.
“What does that have to do with me?””
Daniel’s silence answered before his words did.
“She didn’t want you because you were the child connected to the Hayes family.””
Samantha felt a cold feeling spread through her body.
“She hated me because of money?””
Daniel looked away.
“Not exactly.””
He paused.
“She feared you.””
The words stayed in Samantha’s mind.
“Why?””
“Because your father left evidence.””
Daniel pointed to the folder.
“Evidence that you were the legal heir of a major portion of the Hayes family inheritance.””
Samantha laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it sounded impossible.
“You’re saying my entire life…”
She looked down.
“All those years…”
Daniel nodded sadly.
“You were treated like a servant because Victoria was afraid of what would happen if you learned who you really were.””
Before Samantha could respond, her phone vibrated.
She looked down.
A message.
From Alexander.
Where are you?
She froze.
Daniel noticed.
“Does Alexander know?””
“I don’t know.””
Daniel stood.
“Then you need to find out.””
Samantha looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Alexander Hayes is not only your family.””
Daniel walked toward the door.
“He may be the only person who can protect you from Victoria.””
Samantha followed him.
“Wait.””
Daniel stopped.
“One more thing.””
He turned around.
“Do not tell Victoria what you know.””
“Why?””
Daniel’s expression became serious.
“Because the moment she realizes you discovered the truth…”
He paused.
“She will stop trying to control your life.””
A long silence.
“She will try to destroy it.””
That evening, Samantha returned to the mansion.
Everything looked the same.
The same marble floors.
The same expensive furniture.
The same walls that had watched her suffer for twenty years.
But Samantha was different.
She walked inside carrying a secret.
A secret that changed everything.
Alexander was waiting in the living room.
The moment he saw her face, he knew something happened.
“You found him.””
Samantha stopped.
“You knew?””
Alexander nodded slowly.
“I suspected.””
She stared at him.
“You knew about my father?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Alexander looked away.
“Because I wasn’t sure how much of it was true.””
Samantha stepped closer.
“You knew I was connected to your family.””
“Yes.””
Her voice broke.
“And you still let me wash dishes for them?””
Alexander’s expression changed.
“I didn’t know.””
“You saw me.””
“I saw someone being ignored.””
He looked at her carefully.
“But I didn’t know why.””
Samantha wanted to be angry.
She wanted to blame him.
But something in his voice stopped her.
He sounded honest.
Then Alexander said quietly:
“There’s something else you need to know.””
“What?””
He reached into his jacket.
And pulled out a document.
Samantha looked at the paper.
“What is that?””
Alexander handed it to her.
“A record from the Hayes family trust.””
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then she saw the name.
Samantha Hayes.
Not Collins.
Hayes.
Alexander watched her reaction.
“Your father tried to protect you.””
She looked up.
“From what?””
Alexander’s face became cold.
“From the woman who raised you.””
At that exact moment…
the mansion lights suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then Samantha heard a sound.
A door opening upstairs.
Someone was inside the house.
Someone who wasn’t supposed to be there.
And a familiar voice whispered through the darkness:
“Samantha…”
May you like
Her blood turned cold.
Because the voice belonged to Victoria.
