Chapter 11: The Daughter Who Was Afraid
Samantha couldn’t sleep.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the same things.
Her mother’s letters.
The photograph.
Victoria’s lies.
Charlotte’s fear.
And one question that refused to disappear.
Who entered that room twenty years ago?
The next morning, Samantha found Charlotte sitting alone in the garden.
No makeup.
No expensive dress.
No perfect smile.
Just Charlotte.
For the first time, she looked like the sister Samantha never knew.
Samantha approached.
“Tell me the truth.””
Charlotte didn’t look up.
“I’m trying.””
“No.””
Samantha sat across from her.
“You’re trying to protect someone.””
Charlotte remained silent.
“Who?””
The ocean waves crashed nearby.
Finally, Charlotte whispered:
“Myself.””
Samantha waited.
Charlotte looked at her.
“You think I’m like Mom.””
Samantha didn’t answer.
“Maybe I am.””
Her voice cracked.
“I spent years pretending everything was normal.””
“You watched me suffer.””
Charlotte nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Charlotte looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
Samantha shook her head.
“Everyone says they were afraid.””
“I know.””
Charlotte’s eyes filled.
“But fear doesn’t change what I did.””
The honesty surprised Samantha.
Charlotte continued.
“When we were kids, Mom told Olivia and me that you were dangerous.””
Samantha frowned.
“Dangerous?””
“She said you would take everything from us.””
Samantha stared.
“She told you that?””
Charlotte nodded.
“She said the Hayes family would abandon us if they knew about you.””
Samantha looked away.
“So you believed her.””
“I was eight years old.””
Charlotte swallowed.
“I believed everything she said.””
The answer hurt.
But Samantha understood.
Children trusted adults.
Even when adults were wrong.
“What happened that night?””
Charlotte took a long breath.
“I woke up because I heard shouting.””
She stared into the distance.
“Mom was arguing with Eleanor.””
Samantha listened carefully.
“Your mother was holding papers.””
“The inheritance?””
Charlotte nodded.
“She said Victoria had stolen money.””
Samantha’s hands tightened.
“And Victoria?””
“She was furious.””
Charlotte closed her eyes.
“She said Eleanor had no right to take everything away from her.””
A cold feeling moved through Samantha.
“And then?””
Charlotte whispered:
“Thomas arrived.””
Samantha froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
Charlotte looked at her.
“He was angry. He told Victoria she had ruined enough lives.””
Samantha felt tears forming.
“Then why did he disappear?””
Charlotte looked terrified.
“Because he saw something.””
“What?””
Charlotte shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“You do.””
Charlotte’s silence lasted too long.
Then she finally said:
“He saw Olivia.””
Samantha froze.
“Olivia?””
Charlotte nodded.
“She was standing there.””
The garden became silent.
“She heard everything.””
Samantha stood.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
Charlotte looked away.
“Because she was scared too.””
Samantha shook her head.
“She’s my sister.””
Charlotte’s voice became quiet.
“We were all children.””
The words softened Samantha’s anger.
But they didn’t erase the pain.
Then Charlotte reached into her pocket.
“I kept something.””
She handed Samantha a small key.
“What is this?””
“The key to Mom’s old office.””
Samantha looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because there’s something inside.””
“What?””
Charlotte looked at her.
“The truth Olivia forgot.””
The old Collins office had been locked for years.
Victoria never allowed anyone inside.
Not even Olivia.
Samantha and Charlotte stood outside the door.
The key shook slightly in Samantha’s hand.
“You’re sure?””
Charlotte nodded.
“I should have done this years ago.””
Samantha unlocked the door.
The room smelled old.
Dust covered the furniture.
Papers filled the shelves.
Everything looked frozen in time.
Charlotte walked toward a cabinet.
“There.””
Inside was a hidden compartment.
Samantha opened it.
A small recorder sat inside.
Her heart stopped.
“What is this?””
Charlotte whispered:
“I don’t know.””
Samantha pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then a woman’s voice appeared.
Eleanor.
Samantha immediately covered her mouth.
Her mother’s voice.
After twenty years.
“Victoria, please listen to me.””
A second voice answered.
Victoria.
“You think you can expose me?””
Samantha and Charlotte looked at each other.
The recording continued.
“I know what you did.””
Eleanor’s voice was shaking.
“You changed the documents.””
Victoria laughed.
“You have no proof.””
“I do.””
Silence.
Then Victoria spoke.
“Then you leave me no choice.””
Samantha felt frozen.
The recording ended.
Only five seconds.
But enough.
Enough to prove Victoria was involved.
Charlotte looked at Samantha.
“There’s more.””
“What?””
“The recorder has another side.””
She turned it over.
A small note was attached.
Written by Victoria.
If anyone finds this, the final copy is with the person who started everything.
Samantha frowned.
“Who started everything?””
Before Charlotte could answer…
the office door slammed shut.
Both girls turned.
Someone had locked them inside.
Then Victoria’s voice came from the other side.
“You should have stayed away from things you don’t understand.””
Samantha rushed to the door.
“Victoria!””
No answer.
Only footsteps walking away.
Then Charlotte noticed something on the floor.
A piece of paper had been pushed underneath the door.
Samantha picked it up.
