Chapter 1: The Girl Behind the Kitchen Door
“Tonight, one of my daughters will become the wife of a billionaire… and the other will disappear back into the shadows where she belongs.””
That was the sentence Victoria Collins whispered while staring at her reflection in the golden mirror.
She smiled as she adjusted the diamond necklace around her neck.
The massive mansion overlooking the California coastline looked like something from a magazine cover. White marble floors stretched across the enormous living room. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling like frozen waterfalls. Every piece of furniture was imported, every painting was expensive, and every corner of the house carried the message Victoria cared about most.
Money.
Power.
Status.
Outside, the orange sun sank slowly into the ocean, painting the sky with golden light.
Inside, Victoria’s two favorite daughters prepared for the most important night of their lives.
Olivia and Charlotte Collins stood in front of the mirror wearing matching expressions of confidence.
Both were twenty years old.
Both had flawless makeup.
Both wore expensive designer dresses chosen specifically for tonight.
Olivia lifted her diamond earrings and smiled.
“Do you think he’ll like me more?”” she asked.
Charlotte laughed while fixing her hair.
“Only if he has terrible taste. Everyone knows I’m the prettier one.””
Olivia rolled her eyes.
“You only say that because Mom always tells you.””
Charlotte smiled proudly.
“And Mom is usually right.””
Their laughter filled the room.
A few feet away, Victoria watched them with satisfaction.
“Girls,” she said, walking toward them, “remember what I told you. A man like Alexander Hayes does not choose an ordinary woman.””
She looked at their dresses.
Their jewelry.
Their perfect appearances.
“He needs someone who understands wealth. Someone who can stand beside him at charity events. Someone who can represent the Hayes name.””
Olivia touched her necklace.
“Do you really think he’ll propose?””
Victoria smiled.
“If you play your cards correctly, anything is possible.””
While the three women dreamed about a billionaire’s future wife…
someone else was forgotten.
Near the kitchen sink, Samantha Collins quietly washed dishes.
Her fingers were red from the hot water.
A simple white apron covered her clothes.
Her dark hair was tied back carelessly because nobody cared how she looked.
She had been standing there for hours.
Plate after plate.
Glass after glass.
Silverware after silverware.
The mansion was preparing for an important guest, but Samantha was the only person working.
Nobody thanked her.
Nobody asked if she was tired.
Nobody called her their daughter.
Because inside that mansion, Samantha had never felt like one.
She was born on the same day as Olivia and Charlotte.
The three girls were triplets.
But somehow, from the moment they were children, Samantha had always been treated differently.
Olivia and Charlotte received birthday parties in hotel ballrooms.
Samantha received leftover cake in the kitchen.
Olivia and Charlotte had private tutors.
Samantha learned from old books nobody wanted anymore.
Olivia and Charlotte called Victoria “Mom.””
Samantha had learned not to expect that word to mean anything.
She continued washing dishes silently.
Then the sound of heels clicking across the marble floor approached.
Victoria appeared in the kitchen doorway.
Her smile disappeared instantly.
“Samantha.””
The girl froze.
“Yes, Mom?””
Victoria looked at the stack of clean plates.
Then at Samantha’s hands.
“You stopped.””
Samantha blinked.
“I was just—”
“You were just what?””
Victoria’s voice echoed through the kitchen.
“Standing there while important guests are arriving?””
Samantha lowered her eyes.
“I’m sorry. I’ll continue.””
Victoria crossed her arms.
“You always need to be reminded.””
The words were cold.
“You should be grateful we allow you to stay in this house.””
Samantha’s fingers tightened around the plate she was holding.
Allow you to stay.
The sentence hurt more than Samantha wanted to admit.
Victoria turned toward the living room.
“Tonight is important. Don’t embarrass this family.””
Then she walked away.
A few seconds later, Olivia appeared at the kitchen entrance.
She looked Samantha up and down.
Then she smiled.
“You know, with that apron, you actually look exactly like what you’re supposed to be.””
Samantha didn’t answer.
Charlotte joined her sister.
“What?””
Olivia laughed.
“A maid.””
The two sisters giggled.
Charlotte adjusted her necklace.
“Good thing Alexander isn’t coming here for her.””
Samantha kept washing.
She had learned a long time ago that defending herself only made things worse.
But deep inside, a small part of her still wondered…
What would it feel like if someone looked at her and saw a daughter?
Not a servant.
Not a mistake.
Not someone who existed only to clean up everyone else’s mess.
Then the sound of approaching cars interrupted the mansion.
Victoria immediately straightened her posture.
“He’s here.””
Everyone rushed toward the entrance.
Everyone except Samantha.
She continued washing the last few dishes.
But even she stopped when the enormous front doors opened.
The entire mansion became silent.
Elegant footsteps echoed against the marble floor.
Alexander Hayes had arrived.
The youngest billionaire in America.
A man whose name appeared on magazine covers around the world.
Tall.
Confident.
Unreachable.
Victoria immediately walked forward with the brightest smile she could create.
“Mr. Hayes, welcome. It is an honor to have you here.””
Alexander nodded politely.
“Thank you for inviting me.””
Victoria quickly motioned toward her daughters.
“These are my beautiful girls.””
Olivia stepped forward first.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you.””
Charlotte followed.
“We’ve heard so much about you.””
Alexander gave them a polite glance.
But something was missing.
Interest.
Excitement.
Connection.
His eyes moved past them.
Past Victoria.
Past the expensive decorations.
Until they stopped.
On Samantha.
The girl standing near the kitchen.
The girl holding a wet plate.
The girl nobody noticed.
For the first time in her life…
everyone else disappeared.
May you like
Because Alexander Hayes was looking directly at her.
And Samantha had no idea why.
