Chapter 3: The Secret in the Photograph
Samantha turned around slowly.
Her heart pounded.
Standing in the kitchen doorway was Victoria.
For the first time in years, the woman looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not disappointed.
Afraid.
Samantha held the photograph tightly.
“Mom?””
Victoria stared at the picture.
Then at Samantha.
“Where did you get that?””
Samantha’s voice trembled.
“It was on the counter.””
Victoria walked forward quickly.
“Give it to me.””
Samantha stepped back.
“No.””
The word surprised both of them.
Victoria stopped.
Because Samantha had never refused her before.
“I want to know what it means.””
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“You don’t need to know.””
Samantha looked at the photograph again.
Three babies.
Three sisters.
One family.
“Why does someone want me to ask about the truth?””
Victoria reached for the picture.
“Samantha, some things are better left forgotten.””
“Forgotten by who?””
The question hung in the air.
Victoria said nothing.
And that silence hurt more than an answer.
From the hallway, another voice appeared.
“Interesting.””
Both women turned.
Alexander stood there.
He had heard enough.
Victoria’s face changed instantly.
“Mr. Hayes, this is a private family matter.””
Alexander looked at Samantha.
Then at the photograph.
“I agree.””
He paused.
“Which is why I’m curious why your daughter seems to know nothing about it.””
Victoria’s jaw tightened.
“You’re misunderstanding.””
“Am I?””
Alexander stepped into the kitchen.
“I’ve met many people who hide things.””
His eyes moved to Victoria.
“But fear usually reveals more than words.””
Samantha looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Nobody answered.
Then suddenly, Victoria’s phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
Her face turned pale.
Alexander noticed.
“Who is it?””
Victoria ignored him.
The phone kept ringing.
Finally, she answered.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
Then her expression completely changed.
“What do you mean he’s awake?””
Samantha felt a chill.
Alexander watched carefully.
Victoria ended the call.
She looked shaken.
For the first time Samantha saw something she had never seen before.
Her mother wasn’t in control.
“Who was that?”” Samantha asked.
Victoria looked at her.
And whispered:
“Your father.””
The kitchen went silent.
Samantha froze.
Her entire life, she had been told almost nothing about him.
Only that he left.
Only that he was gone.
Only that asking questions was disrespectful.
“My father?””
Victoria looked away.
“Yes.””
“Where is he?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
Alexander stepped closer.
“Samantha deserves the truth.””
Victoria’s eyes flashed with anger.
“You don’t know anything about this family.””
Alexander’s voice remained calm.
“Maybe not.””
He looked at Samantha.
“But I know what it looks like when someone has been lied to.””
Those words stayed in the air.
Later that night, after everyone went to sleep, Samantha sat alone in her small bedroom.
Unlike Olivia and Charlotte’s rooms filled with designer furniture, hers was simple.
A small bed.
A wooden desk.
A single window overlooking the ocean.
She stared at the photograph for hours.
Questions filled her mind.
Why did Victoria hide her father?
Why was Alexander interested in her family?
Why did a stranger leave a message telling her to discover the truth?
Then her phone vibrated.
Samantha almost never received messages.
She looked down.
Unknown number.
One sentence appeared on the screen.
“I know what your mother did twenty years ago.””
Her breath stopped.
Another message arrived.
“Meet me tomorrow if you want to know why she chose your sisters over you.””
Samantha stared at the screen.
Then the final message appeared.
A name.
A name she had never seen before.
May you like
But Alexander Hayes recognized immediately when he saw it the next morning.
Because that name belonged to the one person who could destroy the Collins family forever.
