Chapter 7: The Hidden Heir
The mansion had never felt so unfamiliar.
Samantha sat alone in the library, surrounded by thousands of expensive books she had never been allowed to touch.
The room belonged to Victoria.
Everything inside represented the woman’s obsession with power.
Leather chairs.
Ancient paintings.
Glass cabinets filled with awards and trophies.
For years, Samantha had cleaned this room.
But tonight was different.
Tonight, she sat in the chair.
Not as a servant.
Not as someone who was allowed to exist only in the background.
She sat there because she finally knew the truth.
The Collins mansion had been built on lies.
And she was tired of living inside them.
The small box from Thomas rested on the table.
Her mother’s letters were inside.
Letters written twenty years ago.
Letters Victoria had hidden from her.
Samantha reached toward the first envelope.
Her fingers trembled.
The handwriting on the front was delicate.
To my beautiful daughter, Samantha.
Her eyes immediately filled.
Nobody had ever written those words to her before.
She opened it carefully.
But before she could read it, the library door opened.
Alexander walked inside.
He stopped when he saw her.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Alexander quietly said:
“You found them.””
Samantha looked up.
“Yes.””
He walked closer.
“Are you okay?””
She almost laughed.
The question sounded simple.
But nobody had asked her that in years.
“I don’t know.””
Alexander sat across from her.
“That’s understandable.””
Samantha looked at him.
“You knew about all of this.””
Alexander didn’t deny it.
“I knew pieces.””
“Pieces?””
“Yes.””
His expression became serious.
“My grandfather kept records about the Hayes family. When I was younger, I found documents mentioning Eleanor, Thomas, and a missing child.””
Samantha stared.
“A missing child.””
Alexander nodded.
“You.””
The word felt strange.
Like her entire identity had been rewritten overnight.
“Why didn’t you tell me when you came here?””
Alexander looked down.
“Because I wasn’t certain.””
Samantha’s voice became quieter.
“You still looked at me differently.””
Alexander met her eyes.
“Because I recognized your mother’s necklace.””
Samantha touched the small necklace around her neck.
The only thing she had left from her biological mother.
“You knew this?””
“My grandfather gave me a photograph years ago.””
Alexander paused.
“Your mother wore that necklace the day you were born.””
Samantha looked away.
“So when you saw me…”
“I knew something was impossible.””
The silence between them felt different now.
Not uncomfortable.
Just heavy.
Then Samantha opened the letter.
Her mother’s words filled the quiet room.
My dear Samantha,
If you are reading this, then something happened that kept me from being there with you.
Samantha’s breathing became shaky.
Alexander watched silently.
I want you to know one thing before anything else.
You were never unwanted.
A tear rolled down Samantha’s cheek.
She quickly wiped it away.
But Alexander noticed.
The letter continued.
You were the greatest gift I ever received.
Samantha covered her mouth.
For twenty years, she had believed she was the daughter nobody wanted.
But her mother’s words said the opposite.
She kept reading.
Until one sentence made her freeze.
Victoria will tell you that love is something you earn. She is wrong.
Samantha looked up.
Alexander noticed her expression.
“What?””
She handed him the letter.
He read silently.
Then his face became cold.
“She knew.””
Samantha frowned.
“Knew what?””
“That Victoria would do this.””
Before Samantha could ask more, another sound came from the hallway.
A loud crash.
Both of them stood.
Alexander immediately moved toward the door.
“What was that?””
They walked quickly into the hall.
Then they saw Thomas standing near the staircase.
Holding an old wooden box.
His face was pale.
“What happened?”” Samantha asked.
Thomas looked at her.
“I found something.””
He opened the box.
Inside was a collection of documents.
But one paper stood out.
A legal agreement.
Alexander took it.
His expression changed as he read.
“What is it?””
He looked at Samantha.
“The original inheritance agreement.””
Thomas nodded.
“Your grandfather created it before he died.””
Samantha stepped closer.
“And?””
Alexander looked confused.
Then shocked.
“According to this, Samantha isn’t just an heir.””
A strange silence filled the hallway.
“What does that mean?””
Alexander looked at the document again.
“She is the primary beneficiary.””
Samantha froze.
Thomas nodded.
“Your grandfather believed you were the only person who could protect the Hayes legacy.””
Samantha stared.
“But why?””
Thomas looked at Victoria’s office door.
“Because he knew someone would try to steal it.””
The sound of footsteps interrupted them.
Victoria appeared at the end of the hall.
She looked at the document in Alexander’s hand.
And all the color disappeared from her face.
“You found it.””
Nobody answered.
Victoria slowly smiled.
But there was no confidence left.
Only desperation.
“You think that paper changes everything?””
Alexander held it up.
“It proves you lied.””
Victoria looked at Samantha.
“No.””
Her voice became cold.
“It proves you still don’t understand.””
Samantha stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Victoria stepped closer.
“The inheritance was never the real secret.””
The room became silent.
Victoria looked directly at Samantha.
“The person who changed your life twenty years ago…”
She paused.
“…was not me.””
Everyone froze.
Samantha’s heart began racing.
“Then who was it?””
Victoria smiled.
A terrible realization crossed her face.
May you like
And she whispered:
“Your sister.””
