Chapter 10: The Photograph That Changed Everything

Samantha stared at the photograph on her phone.

The world around her seemed to disappear.

The hospital room.

The machines.

The voices in the hallway.

Everything became distant.

Because the picture showed Alexander standing outside a restaurant with Victoria.

Together.

Talking.

Secretly.

Her fingers went cold.

“No…”

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Alexander immediately noticed her expression.

“What happened?””

Samantha slowly turned the phone toward him.

The moment Alexander saw the image, his face changed.

Not shock.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

And that terrified her.

“You know about this.””

It wasn’t a question.

Alexander looked at her.

“Samantha…”

“You know.””

His silence was enough.

The pain in her chest returned.

The same feeling she had carried her entire life.

The feeling that everyone knew something except her.

Richard watched them carefully.

“What is that?””

Samantha didn’t answer.

She couldn’t.

Instead, she looked at Alexander.

“Why were you meeting her?””

Alexander took a breath.

“I can explain.””

She laughed quietly.

A broken laugh.

“Everyone says that.””

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

Everyone had always had an explanation.

Victoria had explanations.

Charlotte had explanations.

Even her father had explanations.

But explanations didn’t erase twenty years.

Alexander stepped closer.

“I wasn’t working with Victoria.””

“Then what were you doing?””

He looked at the photograph again.

“I was investigating her.””

Samantha frowned.

“Investigating?””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide it from me?””

Alexander looked away.

“Because I needed proof.””

The room became silent.

Samantha shook her head.

“You all keep making decisions for me.””

Her voice trembled.

“You all decide what I should know. What I should handle. What I should understand.””

Alexander had no answer.

Because she was right.

Richard slowly stood.

“Perhaps she deserves the complete truth.””

Alexander looked at him.

“Grandfather—”

“No.””

Richard’s voice was firm.

“She has spent her entire life surrounded by people protecting their own secrets.””

He looked at Samantha.

“She deserves to choose what happens next.””

Samantha looked at Alexander.

“Tell me everything.””

Alexander remained silent for several seconds.

Then he nodded.

“Three months ago, I discovered financial records connected to Victoria.””

Samantha listened.

“She had been moving money from companies connected to the Hayes family.””

Richard’s expression darkened.

“She continued?””

Alexander nodded.

“I suspected she was looking for something.””

“What?””

“The original inheritance documents.””

Samantha looked confused.

“But why?””

“Because the documents contain more than ownership information.””

Alexander paused.

“They contain evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

His jaw tightened.

“The night your mother died.””

The room became colder.

Samantha whispered:

“What evidence?””

Alexander looked at Richard.

Richard answered.

“A recording.””

Samantha froze.

“A recording?””

Richard nodded.

“Your mother left one behind.””

The truth felt impossible.

“Where is it?””

Nobody answered.

And that silence scared Samantha.

“Where is it?””

Alexander finally spoke.

“Victoria has it.””

Samantha stared.

“Then why hasn’t she destroyed it?””

“Because she doesn’t know everything.””

Richard explained.

“The recording was hidden in pieces.””

“Pieces?””

“Yes.””

He looked at Samantha.

“Your mother trusted only three people.””

Samantha already knew the answer.

“My father.””

Richard nodded.

“Thomas.””

“Victoria?””

“No.””

The old man looked toward the window.

“Me.””

Samantha looked confused.

“Then why didn’t you reveal it?””

Richard’s face filled with regret.

“Because Victoria threatened the people I loved.””

“Who?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, Alexander spoke.

“Charlotte.””

Samantha froze.

“What?””

“Victoria threatened to destroy Charlotte’s life if Richard spoke.””

Samantha remembered Charlotte’s confession.

The fear.

The guilt.

The silence.

“She was protecting Charlotte.””

Alexander nodded.

“But there is something else.””

“What?””

Alexander looked at Samantha.

“The third person who had a piece of the recording…”

He paused.

“Was Olivia.””

Samantha’s eyes widened.

“Olivia?””

“Yes.””

The realization hit.

“That’s why she didn’t know.””

Alexander nodded.

“Victoria separated everyone who knew the truth.””

Samantha looked at the photograph again.

“So why did she send this to me?””

Richard’s expression became serious.

“Who sent the message?””

Samantha checked.

Unknown number.

“I don’t know.””

Alexander immediately looked concerned.

“Show me.””

She handed him the phone.

He studied the message.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

Alexander zoomed in on the photograph.

“This picture was taken yesterday.””

Samantha froze.

“How do you know?””

“Because of the background.””

He pointed.

“That restaurant closed two years ago.””

Richard frowned.

“So someone recreated the situation.””

Alexander nodded.

“To make it look suspicious.””

Samantha felt a wave of confusion.

Someone wanted her to distrust Alexander.

Someone wanted her alone.

But why?

Then her phone vibrated again.

Another message.

This time, there was no photograph.

Only words.

You are looking in the wrong direction.

Then another message appeared.

Ask Charlotte what happened the night your mother died.

Samantha stared at the screen.

Everyone became silent.

Because the message confirmed one thing.

The person behind all of this was still watching.

Later that night, Samantha returned to the mansion.

But she no longer walked through the doors like a prisoner.

She walked like someone searching for answers.

Charlotte was waiting in the living room.

The moment she saw Samantha’s expression, she knew.

“You found out.””

Samantha stopped.

“About what?””

Charlotte looked down.

“You already know.””

The anger inside Samantha returned.

“You were there.””

Charlotte closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“On the night my mother died.””

Charlotte nodded.

Samantha’s voice broke.

“What happened?””

Charlotte looked terrified.

“I didn’t see everything.””

“Then tell me what you saw.””

Charlotte’s hands began shaking.

“I saw Victoria arguing with your mother.””

Samantha froze.

“What were they arguing about?””

Charlotte whispered:

“You.””

The room went silent.

“What about me?””

Charlotte looked up.

“She said you could never know who you really were.””

Samantha felt her heart pound.

“And then?””

Charlotte looked toward the dark hallway.

“Then someone else entered the room.””

“Who?””

Charlotte’s lips trembled.

“I don’t know.””

Samantha stepped closer.

“You do.””

Charlotte shook her head.

“No.””

But her eyes said otherwise.

Then Charlotte whispered:

“The person who came in…”

She stopped.

Her face turned pale.

“Was someone we all thought was dead.””
