Chapter 6: The Father Who Came Back
The mansion fell completely silent.
Samantha stared at the man standing in front of her.
Her entire life had been built around one story.
Her father left.
Her father abandoned her.
Her father didn’t care.
But now he stood in front of her.
Older.
Broken.
With tears in his eyes.
“I don’t understand.””
Her voice was barely audible.
The man took a step forward.
“I know.””
He looked at her carefully.
“I know you have every reason to hate me.””
Samantha couldn’t answer.
Because she didn’t know what she felt.
Anger.
Confusion.
Pain.
All mixed together.
Victoria suddenly moved.
“This is impossible.””
The man looked at her.
“You thought I was dead.””
Victoria’s face became pale.
Alexander looked between them.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at him.
“Thomas Hayes.””
Alexander froze.
“Thomas…”
He knew that name.
Everyone in the Hayes family knew.
Thomas Hayes.
The man who disappeared twenty years ago.
The man who was blamed for Eleanor Hayes’ death.
The man whose reputation was destroyed.
Alexander looked at Samantha.
Then back at Thomas.
“You’re alive.””
Thomas nodded.
“Barely.””
Victoria’s voice became sharp.
“You should have stayed gone.””
The room changed.
Samantha looked at her.
Those words were not from someone surprised.
Those were words from someone afraid.
Thomas smiled sadly.
“That’s exactly what you wanted.””
Samantha looked at him.
“What happened?””
Thomas looked at her.
“I was trying to protect you.””
She shook her head.
“By leaving me?””
Pain crossed his face.
“No.””
He lowered his eyes.
“By disappearing.””
Samantha waited.
Thomas took a deep breath.
“Twenty years ago, your mother Eleanor discovered that Victoria was secretly using the Collins family name to access the Hayes fortune.””
Victoria interrupted.
“Lies.””
Thomas continued.
“She found documents. Bank records. Transfers.””
Alexander listened carefully.
Thomas looked at him.
“Your father knew too.””
Alexander’s eyes narrowed.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
The room became heavier.
Thomas continued.
“When Eleanor planned to expose everything, Victoria panicked.””
Samantha whispered:
“What did she do?””
Thomas looked at Victoria.
“She arranged an accident.””
Victoria immediately shouted:
“Stop.””
But Thomas continued.
“Eleanor died.””
Samantha covered her mouth.
“And you?””
Thomas looked down.
“I survived.””
Silence.
“Victoria told everyone I caused the accident. She destroyed my name. She took Samantha away.””
Samantha’s eyes filled.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
Thomas looked at her.
“I tried.””
His voice broke.
“Many times.””
“Then why didn’t I know?””
Thomas looked at Victoria.
“Because she made sure you never received my letters.””
Samantha turned toward Victoria.
“Letters?””
Victoria looked away.
That was enough.
Samantha understood.
Twenty years of silence.
Twenty years of believing nobody cared.
All because someone chose to hide the truth.
Thomas reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small box.
“I kept these for you.””
Samantha didn’t move.
“What are they?””
“Your mother’s letters.””
Her breathing stopped.
“My mother?””
Thomas nodded.
“Eleanor wrote them before she died.””
Samantha slowly took the box.
Her hands shook.
Inside were dozens of envelopes.
All with her name.
All unopened.
All waiting.
“She wanted you to know who you were.””
Thomas looked at her.
“She wanted you to grow up knowing you were loved.””
The words broke something inside Samantha.
Because that was the one thing she had always wanted.
To know she mattered.
Victoria suddenly stepped forward.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed at Samantha.
“If she reads those letters, everything changes.””
Alexander’s voice became cold.
“That’s the point.””
Victoria stared at him.
“You think you’ve won?””
She smiled.
A dangerous smile.
“You still don’t know the entire truth.””
Samantha looked at her.
“What truth?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked at Alexander.
“You should ask your grandfather why he chose Samantha over you.””
Alexander’s expression changed.
“What?””
Victoria smiled.
“Ask him why the Hayes inheritance was never meant to go to you.””
The room went silent.
Samantha looked at Alexander.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
Victoria turned toward the staircase.
“Because the person who controls everything…”
She paused.
“…is not Samantha.””
Everyone waited.
Victoria finished:
“It’s someone who has been living inside this mansion all along.””
Then she walked away.
Leaving behind a question nobody could ignore.

Who else had been hiding the truth?
And why did Victoria look terrified of them?
