Chapter 9: The Woman Who Chose Me
I didn’t ask Claire anything.
Not immediately.
Because sometimes silence reveals more than questions.
She stood in front of me, crying.
But she wasn’t defending herself.
That scared me.
“Is it true?””
Her lips parted.
“Please.””
“Is it true?””
She looked down.
And that was enough.
I walked outside.
I didn’t know where I was going.
I just needed distance.
The streets passed by without meaning.
All I could think about was our first meeting.
The restaurant.
Her smile.
The way she said she didn’t care about money.
The way she told me she admired hardworking people.
Had it all been a performance?
I returned home after midnight.
Claire was still awake.
She was sitting at the kitchen table.
The same table where we had celebrated birthdays.
The same table where we had planned our future.
“I’m going to tell you everything.””
I didn’t sit.
“Start.””
She took a deep breath.
“When I met you, I knew who you were.””
I closed my eyes.
“How?””
“Marcus.””
I looked at her.
“He told me about you.””
“Before we met?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted me to get close to you.””
The words hurt.
“How close?””
She cried.
“At first, I thought it was just about information.””
“And later?””
“Later…”
She struggled.
“Later I actually fell in love with you.””
I laughed quietly.
“That’s convenient.””
“I know how it sounds.””
“Because it sounds like a lie.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
“Then why should I believe anything?””
She looked at me.
“Because if I only wanted your money, I would have left years ago.””
I didn’t answer.
She continued.
“You gave me everything. But more importantly, you gave me a life I never thought I could have.””
I looked away.
“Then why hide this?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
“Of what?””
“Of how we met.””
She wiped her tears.
“I thought if you knew, you would never forgive me.””
I remained silent.
“And then Marcus came back.””
“What did he threaten?””
“He said he would tell you everything.””
“He should have.””
“I know.””
The honesty caught me.
“I should have told you before he had the chance.””
She looked at the floor.
“But I was selfish.””
That was the first thing she had said that sounded completely true.
“I thought I could fix the past without hurting the present.””
I finally sat down.
“Claire.””
She looked up.
“I need to know one thing.””
“What?””
“Did you ever love me?””
Her face broke.
“Yes.””
No hesitation.
“I loved you before I deserved you.””
The answer hurt because part of me believed her.
And that made everything harder.
A knock came from the front door.
Both of us froze.
It was nearly one in the morning.
I stood.
“Who would come here now?””
I walked toward the door.
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Don’t.””
“Why?””
Her face changed.
Because she knew.
I opened the door.
Marcus stood outside.
Smiling.
“You finally know.””
I stared at him.
“What do you want?””
He looked past me.
At Claire.
“I want what I was promised.””
“You’re done.””
He laughed.
“No.””
He reached into his coat and pulled out a folder.
“I’m just getting started.””
He handed it to me.
I opened it.
Inside were photos.
Documents.
Records.
Then I saw the final page.
A marriage certificate.
Not mine and Claire’s.
Another one.
With a date from two years after Claire and I were married.
I looked at Marcus.
“What is this?””
His smile widened.
“Proof.””
“Of what?””
He leaned closer.
“That your wife was never legally free to marry you.””
I turned toward Claire.
May you like
She looked terrified.
And for the first time in eight years, I wondered if I had ever truly been her husband at all.
