Chapter 5: The Promise She Hid

I didn’t sleep.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was trying to understand how the woman I loved could have a secret this large.

By morning, my coffee had gone cold on the table.

The document was still sitting in front of me.

Marcus’s name.

My land.

My wife’s secret.

Three things that had never belonged in the same sentence.

At eight thirty, Claire came home.

She looked exhausted.

Her hair was messy.

Her eyes were red.

For a moment, I saw the woman I had spent eight years loving.

Then I remembered the papers.

The trust I thought we had.

The secrets I had just discovered.

“Where were you?”” I asked.

She placed her purse down slowly.

“With Marcus.””

The honesty surprised me.

“What?””

“I needed to talk to him.””

I held up the document.

“About this?””

Her face changed.

“You found it.””

“Yes.””

She closed her eyes.

“Okay.””

Okay.

That was her response.

Like we were discussing a late bill.

Not a stranger claiming rights over my property.

“Claire, start talking.””

She sat down.

“I met Marcus when I was twenty-four.””

I remained standing.

“He was charming.””

Her voice became quieter.

“He made me feel important.””

I listened.

“Then I discovered he wasn’t the person I thought he was.””

“What did he do?””

She looked at the floor.

“He had debts.””

“How much?””

“A lot.””

“And you?””

“I helped him.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You helped him?””

“Yes.””

“By borrowing money?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Claire.””

She looked up.

“I thought I could fix him.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“No?””

“No. You thought love could change him.””

The silence that followed told me I was right.

She looked away.

“After we divorced, he disappeared.””

“And now?””

“Now he’s back.””

“Why?””

Her fingers tightened around each other.

“Because he found out about us.””

“Us?””

“Yes. You. Your business. Your property.””

My stomach dropped.

“How?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she whispered:

“I told him.””

The room went silent.

“You told him?””

“Before we got married.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

She started crying.

“Because he contacted me.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

“He threatened me.””

“With what?””

She wiped her face.

“He said if I didn’t help him, he would expose things from our marriage.””

“What things?””

She looked terrified.

“I made mistakes.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I walked closer.

“But nobody tells me what the mistake is.””

She finally broke.

“Marcus made illegal investments using my name.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I didn’t know at first.””

“Did you sign anything?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he told me it was temporary.””

I closed my eyes.

A painful realization formed.

“Claire.””

She looked at me.

“Did you marry me because you loved me?””

Her face collapsed.

The question hurt her.

But I needed to ask.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you hide this?””

“Because I thought I could protect you.””

I looked at the document.

“You protected me by putting my land at risk?””

“No.””

“Then what were you doing?””

She whispered:

“Trying to pay him.””

I felt numb.

“Using my property?””

“No.””

“But you changed the documents.””

“I was going to fix it.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

“When Marcus stopped asking?””

Her tears fell.

“I was scared.””

I believed she was scared.

That part was obvious.

But fear had made her betray me.

And that hurt more than anger.

“I need to know everything.””

She nodded.

“I’ll tell you.””

“Everything?””

“Yes.””

I sat across from her.

“Start from the beginning.””

She took a deep breath.

“Six months ago, Marcus contacted me.””

“What did he want?””

“Money.””

“How much?””

“Enough to disappear.””

“And when you refused?””

Her face turned pale.

“He showed me a picture.””

“A picture of what?””

She looked at me.

“A document.””

“What document?””

Her voice dropped.

“The original marriage agreement from my first marriage.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with me?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she reached into her purse.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

Then she placed it on the table.

My eyes moved to the heading.

And I felt my blood run cold.

Because my name was written on it.

May you like

Not because I signed it.

Because someone had forged my signature.
