Chapter 14: The Night Everything Changed

I read the message three times.

Each time, it became harder to breathe.

The night my father died.

The night everyone avoided discussing.

The night everyone called an accident.

I looked at Claire.

“You were there?””

She didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“Claire.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The word came out like a confession.

I stepped back.

“You were there when my father died?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“I wanted to.””

“When?””

“Many times.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

I felt something crack inside me.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

A feeling of being the last person to know anything about my own life.

“Tell me what happened.””

She looked down.

“I went to see your father because he asked me to.””

“Why?””

“He knew about Marcus.””

I waited.

“He knew I was hiding things.””

“And he knew about Natalie?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Claire wiped her tears.

“He told me I needed to tell you the truth.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“I know.””

“What happened next?””

She closed her eyes.

“Your father wanted to help Natalie.””

“How?””

“He had evidence against Marcus.””

“Then why didn’t he use it?””

“Because he wanted to protect her first.””

I listened.

“He knew Marcus would destroy her if he felt cornered.””

“So what happened?””

Claire’s voice shook.

“Marcus found out.””

My stomach tightened.

“How?””

“Because someone told him.””

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

That answer frustrated me.

But before I could speak, she continued.

“When I arrived at your father’s office, Natalie was already there.””

My eyes widened.

“She was there?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

“Your father was angry.””

“At Natalie?””

“No.””

Claire shook her head.

“At himself.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed he should have noticed sooner.””

I stayed silent.

“He told Natalie she was not responsible for what Marcus did.””

That sounded exactly like my father.

Always protecting others.

Always carrying burdens that weren’t his.

“Then Marcus arrived.””

My body went still.

“He was there?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“To take the evidence.””

“What happened?””

Claire looked terrified.

“He and your father argued.””

“About what?””

“The company.””

I frowned.

“What does my company have to do with Natalie?””

“Everything.””

She took a breath.

“Marcus didn’t just want money.””

I waited.

“He wanted control.””

“Over what?””

“Your company.””

I thought about Richard.

Ethan.

All the pieces.

“What happened after they argued?””

Claire’s hands started shaking.

“I left.””

“You left?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your father told me to.””

I stared.

“Why would he tell you to leave?””

“Because he knew Marcus was dangerous.””

“And then?””

“I heard shouting from outside.””

“What kind of shouting?””

“Your father yelling.””

“Then?””

A tear rolled down her face.

“Then I heard something fall.””

I felt sick.

“What did you do?””

“I went back.””

“And?””

She looked at me.

“I saw your father on the floor.””

Silence.

“Marcus?””

“He was gone.””

“Did you call the police?””

She looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

“Claire.””

“I panicked.””

“You panicked?””

“Yes.””

“You left him?””

“I thought he was dead.””

“You thought?””

She cried.

“I was scared.””

I closed my eyes.

Again.

That word.

Fear.

But this time, I understood.

She wasn’t afraid of losing money.

She was afraid of Marcus.

“What happened next?””

“I called someone.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

“Richard.””

My eyes opened.

“Richard?””

“Yes.””

“And what did he do?””

“He told me to leave.””

Of course.

“He told you to leave.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“He said if I stayed, Marcus would blame me.””

I stood.

“So you listened.””

“I was terrified.””

“And my father?””

Her voice broke.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

The truth hurt.

Not because Claire caused my father’s death.

Because she had been there.

She knew.

And she let me believe I lost him naturally.

My phone rang.

Evelyn.

I answered.

“We found something.””

“What?””

“The original security footage from your father’s office.””

My heart raced.

“You said it was gone.””

“It was hidden.””

“By who?””

A pause.

Then:

“By your father.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“Because he knew someone would try to destroy it.””

“Can you send it?””

“I already did.””

I opened my phone.

A video file.

Timestamped.

The night my father died.

I pressed play.

The screen showed my father’s office.

Claire entering.

Natalie entering.

Then Marcus.

Then Richard.

My breathing stopped.

Because the final person who walked through that door wasn’t any of them.

It was someone else.

Someone who shouldn’t have been there.

Someone I trusted.

The video froze on the face.

My hands went cold.

May you like

Because the person standing beside my father moments before his death was—

My mother.
