Chapter 3: The Name On The Papers
The next morning, I went straight to my lawyer’s office.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed answers.
For eight years, I trusted Claire completely.
When we married, I never imagined I would need to question her intentions.
My lawyer, Daniel, looked uncomfortable when I walked into his office.
That alone worried me.
“Something happened?”” I asked.
He closed the folder in front of him.
“You received the notification?””
I nodded.
“What is this?””
Daniel leaned back.
“Before I answer, I need to ask you something.””
“What?””
“Did you authorize any changes to your property agreements?””
I frowned.
“No.””
He opened the folder.
“The plantation management rights were modified six months ago.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Daniel turned the papers toward me.
“Your wife requested an update.””
I stared at the document.
Claire’s signature was there.
My name was there.
But something was wrong.
“I didn’t sign this.””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s what I thought.””
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“What exactly changed?””
He pointed to the paragraph.
“She transferred certain management authorities into a separate holding arrangement.””
“Why?””
“That’s what we need to determine.””
I leaned back.
Six months.
The same time Claire started becoming distant.
The same time she began saying things like:
“You need to think about our future.””
“You need to protect what belongs to us.””
“You need to stop giving so much away.””
At the time, I thought she was talking about love.
Now I wasn’t sure.
When I arrived home, Claire was standing in the hallway.
She looked surprised to see me.
“Where were you?””
I held up the papers.
Her face changed.
Not much.
Just enough.
“What is that?””
“I should ask you the same thing.””
Silence.
Then she sighed.
“You went to Daniel?””
“You changed legal documents without telling me.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“I was protecting us.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were making decisions behind my back.””
She crossed her arms.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked away.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“That one day you would give everything away.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everything?””
She stepped closer.
“You don’t see it. You think because you provide money, everything is fine.””
I stared at her.
“And you think because you have access to everything, you’re entitled to control it?””
Her jaw tightened.
“That’s not what I said.””
“It’s what you did.””
For the first time, she looked angry.
“You’re making me the villain.””
“I’m asking why my wife secretly changed ownership documents.””
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she picked up her phone.
“I think we need lawyers.””
I felt something inside me go numb.
“Claire.””
She paused.
“I never stopped taking care of you.””
Her eyes flickered.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice dropped.
“You don’t.””
I stepped closer.
“I bought you the car you wanted. I gave you land. I trusted you with money. I built a life where you never had to worry.””
She looked down.
“And I did all of that because I loved you.””
The silence was painful.
“But apparently loving you isn’t enough.””
Her face changed.
I continued.
“You want me to abandon the people who raised me just to prove I love you.””
“That’s not fair.””
“Isn’t it?””
She wiped a tear from her cheek.
For a second, I saw the woman I married.
Then she said something that erased all my doubt.
“Maybe you should ask your parents why they raised a son who chooses them over his own wife.””
I stood there, speechless.
Because I finally understood.
This wasn’t about the Toyota.
It was never about the Toyota.
It was about control.
Then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed immediately.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
The call ended.
A second later, a message appeared.
She read it silently.
Then she dropped the phone onto the table.
“What happened?””
She looked at me.
May you like
And whispered a name I never expected to hear.
“My first husband.””
