Chapter 6: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
I stared at the paper.
My name.
My signature.
My identity.
But I knew immediately.
It wasn’t mine.
I had signed thousands of documents in my life.
Business contracts.
Property agreements.
Bank papers.
I knew my own handwriting.
This wasn’t me.
“Where did you get this?””
Claire looked nervous.
“Marcus sent it.””
“When?””
“Two weeks ago.””
I looked at her.
“Two weeks ago?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I was trying to handle it.””
I stood up.
“You were trying to handle someone forging my signature on legal documents?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was scared.””
I ran my hand through my hair.
That sentence again.
Scared.
I understood fear.
But fear could not be an excuse forever.
“Claire, what does this document claim?””
She hesitated.
“It says you agreed to transfer part of your assets to protect me from my past debts.””
I stared at her.
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
“Then why would Marcus create it?””
“Because he wants leverage.””
“Against who?””
She looked at me.
“Both of us.””
I walked toward the window.
Outside, the plantation stretched across the land.
Three hectares.
The same land I gave Claire because I wanted her to feel independent.
The same land that now seemed connected to every secret in our marriage.
“Did you ever give him anything?””
Claire was silent.
That silence was the answer.
“What?””
“I gave him money.””
“How much?””
She whispered the amount.
I felt my stomach turn.
It wasn’t a small amount.
It was enough to buy several cars.
Enough to change someone’s life.
“From where?””
She looked down.
“From the business account.””
“Our business account?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“How long?””
“Months.””
“Months?””
“I was going to replace it.””
“With what?””
She cried.
“I don’t know.””
I turned away.
The anger inside me was fighting with something else.
Disappointment.
The woman who accused me of abandoning her had been quietly risking everything we built.
And she had done it while pretending to protect our marriage.
“Why didn’t you trust me?””
That question made her look up.
“I did.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“If you trusted me, you would have told me.””
She had no answer.
A knock interrupted us.
Both of us froze.
Claire looked terrified.
“Who is that?””
I walked toward the door.
Before I could open it, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
Calm.
Confident.
“Finally.””
I didn’t speak.
“I was wondering when you’d discover the truth.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Marcus?””
He laughed softly.
“So she finally told you.””
“Stay away from my family.””
“Your family?””
His tone changed.
“You mean the family you built with a woman who still owes me?””
My jaw tightened.
“What do you want?””
“I want what I was promised.””
“I promised you nothing.””
“No.””
A pause.
“But Claire did.””
I looked at her.
She looked like she already knew what was coming.
“What promise?””
Marcus laughed.
“The same one she made before she married you.””
My voice became cold.
“What promise?””
His answer came slowly.
“She promised that if she ever found a rich man who could save her from me…”
I felt my heart stop.
“…she would make sure I got my share.””
I looked at Claire.
She covered her mouth.
“No,” she whispered.
Marcus continued.
“And now I’m here to collect.””
The call ended.
For several seconds, the only sound in the room was Claire crying.
Then she said something that changed everything.
“I never made that promise.””
I looked at her.
“Then why does he think you did?””
She stared at the floor.
And finally admitted the one thing she had been hiding from me since the beginning.
“Because someone else told him.””
“Who?””
She slowly lifted her eyes.
May you like
And said a name I had never heard before.
“Your brother.””
