Chapter 12: The Secret My Father Took To His Grave

I couldn’t speak.

The world seemed to stop moving.

My father.

The man who taught me how to work.

The man who woke up before dawn every day.

The man who always told me that honesty was worth more than money.

Not naturally.

Those two words changed everything.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Evelyn Hart. I represented your father.””

“Why are you calling me now?””

“Because he left instructions.””

“What instructions?””

“To contact you only if certain documents were discovered.””

I looked at the letter in my hand.

“Documents about what?””

“Your company.””

My eyes closed.

Everyone had been connected.

Everyone except the one person I trusted most.

My father.

“Tell me everything.””

Evelyn was quiet.

“Not over the phone.””

“Where are you?””

She gave me an address.

Then she added:

“Come alone.””

The call ended.

Claire had been watching my face.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

“I need to go somewhere.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know if I can trust anyone right now.””

The words hurt her.

But she understood.

For once, she didn’t argue.

“I understand.””

I grabbed my jacket.

Before leaving, I stopped.

“Claire.””

She looked up.

“Yes?””

“If I find out you knew about this…”

She nodded.

“I understand.””

I drove for forty minutes before reaching a small office downtown.

Evelyn was waiting.

She was older.

Professional.

Calm.

But her eyes carried the weight of someone who had been holding a secret for too long.

“You look like your father.””

I sat down.

“Tell me why my father died.””

She folded her hands.

“Your father discovered something.””

“What?””

“That Richard, Marcus, and Ethan were working together.””

I wasn’t surprised anymore.

“What did he do?””

“He started investigating.””

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

“Because he believed you were surrounded.””

The words hurt.

“He thought his own son couldn’t trust anyone.””

She looked down.

“He was afraid they would destroy you if they knew.””

I stared at the table.

“My father knew.””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Months.””

“Then why did he keep quiet?””

“Because he was trying to collect proof.””

Evelyn opened a folder.

Inside were copies of emails.

Bank records.

Messages.

Everything.

“The day before he died, he was going to meet someone.””

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“Claire.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“Your father wanted to speak with your wife.””

“Why?””

“Because he discovered something about her past.””

I felt sick.

“What?””

Evelyn pushed a document forward.

It was an old report.

A financial investigation.

Claire’s name appeared.

But underneath it was another name.

A name I had never seen before.

“Who is that?””

Evelyn answered:

“Claire’s sister.””

I frowned.

“I didn’t know she had a sister.””

“Most people don’t.””

“Why?””

“Because Claire was trying to protect her.””

I looked confused.

“What does her sister have to do with this?””

Evelyn took a breath.

“Your wife wasn’t the target.””

“What?””

“She was the weakness.””

I stared.

“Explain.””

“Marcus didn’t choose Claire because she was greedy.””

Evelyn’s voice lowered.

“He chose her because he knew she would sacrifice herself for someone she loved.””

I looked at the papers.

“Her sister?””

“Yes.””

“Who is she?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then she said:

“The person who actually owed Marcus millions.””

The room went silent.

A new piece of the puzzle appeared.

One I never expected.

Claire wasn’t running from her past.

She was protecting someone else’s.

“Where is her sister now?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“That’s the problem.””

“What problem?””

“She disappeared the same week your father died.””

I stood.

“Where?””

Evelyn handed me another document.

A missing person report.

At the top was a photograph.

I stared at the face.

Because I recognized her.

Not from meeting her.

From somewhere else.

From the only place I never expected.

My father’s old office.

The woman in the picture had been there the night before he died.

May you like

And beneath the photo was her name.
