Chapter 11: Everyone Who Wanted My Fall

I arrived at Daniel’s office before sunrise.

I didn’t even remember driving there.

My mind was trapped in one question.

How many people had been planning against me?

My brother.

My wife.

Marcus.

Now someone inside my company.

The place I spent years building was no longer feeling like my own.

Daniel was waiting with a folder on his desk.

He looked exhausted.

“You should sit.””

I didn’t.

“Who?””

He knew exactly what I meant.

“Your business partner.””

I waited.

“Richard.””

I felt a strange calm.

Not because it didn’t hurt.

Because I expected it.

Richard had worked with me for ten years.

He knew every weakness in the company.

Every account.

Every contract.

Every future plan.

“Why?””

Daniel opened the folder.

“Because he believed you were holding him back.””

I stared.

“Everyone seems to believe that.””

Daniel slid the documents toward me.

“These are financial transfers.””

I scanned the pages.

Payments.

Offshore accounts.

Companies I didn’t recognize.

“How long?””

“Almost a year.””

I leaned back.

A year.

While I was celebrating company growth.

While I was planning expansions.

While I was buying Claire gifts.

People around me were building a case against me.

“Why didn’t anyone notice?””

Daniel sighed.

“Because the amounts were carefully divided.””

Small enough to avoid attention.

Large enough to matter.

I looked at the papers.

“Was Richard working with Marcus?””

“Yes.””

“And Ethan?””

Daniel nodded.

“They all had the same goal.””

“To take my company.””

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone wanted the same thing.””

Daniel looked at me.

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Claire may have been manipulated, but she wasn’t completely unaware.””

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel pushed another document forward.

A bank transfer.

Claire’s name.

A payment.

To Richard.

My chest tightened.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I stared at the paper.

“She wouldn’t.””

Daniel didn’t argue.

He simply said:

“You need to ask her.””

I left immediately.

When I arrived home, Claire was in the garden.

She looked peaceful.

Almost normal.

That made it worse.

“Claire.””

She turned.

“You found out.””

Not a question.

A statement.

I stopped.

“What did you do?””

Her face changed.

“I know what you saw.””

“Then explain.””

She closed her eyes.

“The money.””

“Yes.””

“Richard contacted me.””

“Why?””

“He said he could help with Marcus.””

I stared at her.

“And you paid him?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

She whispered the amount.

Not huge.

But not small.

“Why?””

“He promised he could make Marcus disappear.””

I shook my head.

“You trusted Richard?””

“I was desperate.””

“You trusted him more than me.””

She cried.

“I didn’t think you would understand.””

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“You didn’t think I would forgive you.””

She looked away.

That was the truth.

“Claire.””

She looked at me.

“I need you to understand something.””

I waited.

“The worst part isn’t that you were afraid.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The worst part is that every time you were afraid, you chose everyone except me.””

She broke down.

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t think you do.””

The silence between us was painful.

Then she said:

“There’s something else.””

I froze.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Richard wasn’t the person who contacted me first.””

“Who was?””

She swallowed.

“Your father.””

I stared.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I wish it was.””

She walked inside and returned with another envelope.

“I found this after Marcus sent the documents.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My father’s handwriting.

The man who taught me honesty.

The man who always told me family mattered.

I read the first line.

*If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.*

My hands trembled.

I continued.

*Your brother made a mistake. Richard made a choice. But there is someone else who has been controlling this from the beginning.*

I stopped.

The next sentence felt impossible.

*The person you trust most is the reason your marriage was destroyed.*

I looked at Claire.

“Who?””

She whispered:

“I don’t know.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Your father was trying to tell you the truth.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

The woman paused.

Then said:

“I’m your father’s lawyer.””

My heart started racing.

“What happened to my father?””

Silence.

May you like

Then:

“He didn’t die naturally.””
