Chapter 8: The War Over Everything I Built
I didn’t speak.
I couldn’t.
The word echoed in my mind.
Company.
Not money.
Not land.
Not some emotional revenge.
My company.
The thing I built from nothing.
The thing my father helped me start in a tiny office with broken chairs and an old computer.
The thing that gave jobs to dozens of families.
The thing Ethan begged to join.
“You’re lying,” I said.
Ethan looked tired.
“I wish I was.””
I stepped into his house.
“Start explaining.””
He closed the door behind me.
For the first time in years, my little brother looked afraid.
“Marcus has investors.””
“I don’t care.””
“You should.””
“Why?””
“Because they’re interested in buying you out.””
I laughed.
“Buying me out?””
“Yes.””
“Why would they need Marcus?””
“Because they needed someone close to you.””
My blood ran cold.
“And that was you?””
Ethan looked away.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
Maybe more than another lie would have.
“Why?””
He sat down.
“Because I thought I deserved more.””
I stared at him.
“More?””
“Yes.””
“You had a job.””
“A job you gave me.””
“And?””
“And everyone knew I only had it because I was your brother.””
I shook my head.
“That’s what you believed?””
“It was true.””
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“It was true because you never wanted to prove yourself.””
He looked angry.
“You don’t understand.””
“No. I understand perfectly.””
I walked around the room.
“You wanted the success without the years.””
“That’s not fair.””
“Isn’t it?””
He stood.
“You think you’re better than everyone.””
I stopped.
There it was.
The same accusation.
The same resentment.
Everyone wanted me to feel guilty for building something.
“You know what’s interesting, Ethan?””
“What?””
“I spent my whole life trying to make sure nobody in this family struggled.””
He said nothing.
“I paid your debts.””
His face changed.
“I helped you start over.””
Silence.
“I defended you when Dad wanted you to learn responsibility.””
His eyes dropped.
“And this is how you repay me?””
He whispered:
“I didn’t think it would go this far.””
I looked at him.
“That’s the excuse everyone uses after they hurt someone.””
He sat back down.
“Marcus said it would only be pressure.””
“Pressure?””
“Yes.””
“He threatened my wife.””
Ethan looked away.
“He said he needed her scared.””
My fists tightened.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you let it happen?””
“I thought she would convince you to sell.””
I stared at him.
“Sell what?””
“The company.””
I shook my head.
“So the whole marriage argument…”
Ethan didn’t respond.
“The car.””
Still nothing.
“The documents.””
He looked guilty.
“Was all of this about forcing me to sell?””
He finally whispered:
“Yes.””
I walked out.
I didn’t say goodbye.
I couldn’t.
Because if I did, I didn’t know what would come out.
Anger.
Pain.
Or something worse.
Disappointment.
When I arrived home, Claire was waiting.
She immediately stood.
“What happened?””
I placed my keys down.
“Ethan confirmed it.””
Her face went pale.
I looked at her.
“He worked with Marcus.””
She covered her mouth.
“I’m sorry.””
I laughed softly.
“Everyone is sorry after the damage is done.””
She looked hurt.
But she didn’t argue.
That was different.
“I know I hurt you.””
“Yes.””
“I know I broke your trust.””
“Yes.””
“But I want to fix this.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
The question surprised her.
“Because I love you.””
I nodded slowly.
“Do you?””
She looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you protect Marcus before protecting me?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Because I was afraid.””
“And now?””
She wiped her face.
“Now I’m more afraid of losing you.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Marcus’s voice came through.
“Congratulations.””
My expression changed.
“For what?””
“You finally figured out Ethan.””
I said nothing.
“But you’re still missing the biggest piece.””
“What piece?””
A pause.
Then he said:
“The reason Claire married you.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Claire.
Her face turned completely white.
“Don’t listen to him,” she whispered.
Marcus continued.
“You really thought she found you by accident?””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What are you talking about?””
“She knew who you were before you met.””
The room went silent.
Claire stepped forward.
“Marcus, stop.””
He laughed.
“Tell him, Claire.””
I looked at my wife.
“Tell me what?””
No answer.
“Claire.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
And then Marcus said the words that shattered everything.
“She didn’t meet you because she loved you.””
A pause.
May you like
“She met you because she needed saving.””
The call ended.
