Chapter 9: The Secret Between Two Mothers

I didn’t remember leaving the house.

I only remembered driving.

The road blurred.

Streetlights passed like ghosts.

My hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly my fingers hurt.

Beside me, Claire sat silently.

For the first time in eight years, she looked like a stranger.

Not because I didn’t love her.

Because I didn’t understand how much pain she had carried alone.

“How long?””

My voice sounded empty.

Claire stared out the window.

“Daniel…”

“How long did you know?””

She closed her eyes.

“Three years.””

I felt something break inside me.

“Three years.””

“Yes.””

“You knew there was a possibility Lily wasn’t ours?””

She turned toward me.

“No.””

“Then what did you know?””

Her voice shook.

“That Vanessa changed something.””

I pulled over.

The car stopped beside an empty road.

“Explain.””

Claire wiped her tears.

“When I found the records, I didn’t know the truth.””

“What did you find?””

“A file.””

“What file?””

“A hospital file with two names.””

I stared at her.

“Whose names?””

Claire whispered:

“Ours.””

The silence was unbearable.

“And another woman’s.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked away.

“You expect me to believe you?””

She flinched.

That hurt.

But I was hurting too.

“I’m not asking you to believe everything.””

“Then what?””

“I’m asking you to understand why I stayed silent.””

“Because you were afraid?””

“Yes.””

“Afraid of what?””

She looked at me.

“Losing you.””

I laughed.

A painful sound.

“You disappeared.””

“I was taken.””

“And before that?””

She looked down.

“I thought Vanessa had proof.””

“What proof?””

“That you knew.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She showed me messages.””

“From me?””

“Yes.””

My heart pounded.

“She had conversations between you and her.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“Then why believe it?””

“Because they looked real.””

The road was silent.

Then she said:

“She showed me you saying you wanted me gone.””

My stomach twisted.

“I never said that.””

“I know now.””

“What changed?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because I found the original messages.””

I stared.

“Where?””

“In Vanessa’s hidden files.””

I shook my head.

“How?””

“Because Ethan helped me.””

Again.

Ethan.

The man who seemed to be everywhere.

“What exactly is Ethan to you?””

Claire hesitated.

“He was my brother.””

I froze.

“What?””

She nodded.

“My half-brother.””

The pieces shifted.

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because our family was complicated.””

“Complicated?””

“My father hid him.””

“Why?””

Claire looked away.

“Because Ethan was the result of an affair.””

I sat silently.

The secrets never ended.

“So Ethan was investigating Vanessa because…”

“Because he knew what my father had done.””

“What did your father do?””

Claire whispered:

“He helped create the entire mess.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Detective Harris.

A location.

An old factory address.

I showed Claire.

Her face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

“That’s where they kept me.””

My heart stopped.

“Vanessa’s house wasn’t the only place.””

She nodded.

“There was another room.””

“What room?””

“A room where they kept records.””

I started the car.

“We’re going there.””

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“If we go there, we may find out the truth about Lily.””

I looked at her.

“I need the truth.””

She nodded slowly.

“Even if it hurts?””

I thought about Lily.

About the little girl sleeping upstairs.

About the child who had protected her mother when adults failed.

“Yes.””

We drove to the abandoned factory outside the city.

The building looked dead.

Broken windows.

Rusting metal.

No lights.

No signs of life.

But when we entered, I knew someone had been there recently.

The dust on the floor had footprints.

Fresh ones.

Claire led the way.

“This is where they brought me.””

We reached a hallway.

At the end was a locked door.

My stomach turned.

The same feeling.

The same fear.

The same kind of door that had changed my life.

I opened it.

Inside was a small office.

Files covered the shelves.

Photos covered the walls.

And in the center of the room was a table.

On the table was a folder.

With my name on it.

I opened it.

Inside was a document.

A birth certificate.

I read the name.

Then the date.

Then the mother’s name.

My hands started shaking.

Because it wasn’t Claire’s name.

It wasn’t Vanessa’s.

It was another woman.

A woman I had never heard of.

Then I saw the final page.

A handwritten note.

May you like

Five words.

*The real Lily is alive.*
