Chapter 14: The Last Lie My Father Told
My father stood at the end of the hallway.
Older than I remembered.
Thinner.
But unmistakably him.
The scar on his face.
The eyes.
The way he stood.
Everything.
For twelve years, I had imagined this moment.
I imagined anger.
I imagined questions.
I imagined forgiveness.
I never imagined feeling nothing but betrayal.
“Why?””
That was the only word I could say.
My father looked at me.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t know.””
He looked at Lily.
Then at Claire.
Then at Amelia.
“I made mistakes.””
I laughed.
“Mistakes?””
I walked toward him.
“You let me bury you.””
His eyes filled with shame.
“Yes.””
“You let me think my own wife abandoned me.””
“Yes.””
“You let my daughter grow up surrounded by lies.””
His face broke.
“I was trying to fix it.””
“You had twelve years.””
“I know.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
He looked at the floor.
“Because every time I tried, someone else paid the price.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Michael Reed, you’re going to explain everything.””
My father looked at him.
“I will.””
“Start with Vanessa.””
He nodded.
“Vanessa was never the mastermind.””
I looked at him.
“Then who was?””
He looked at me.
“Your mother.””
Again.
The same answer.
But this time, I needed the explanation.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He took a breath.
“Because she was desperate.””
“For what?””
“For you.””
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
He looked at Lily.
“Your mother wanted you to inherit everything.””
“What?””
“Your family fortune. Your company. The trust.””
I frowned.
“She cared about money?””
“No.””
His voice lowered.
“She cared about keeping you powerful enough that nobody could hurt you.””
“That doesn’t justify this.””
“No.””
He looked broken.
“It doesn’t.””
He continued.
“Vanessa discovered the hospital mistake.””
“The baby swap?””
“Yes.””
“And she used it.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“She threatened your mother.””
“With what?””
“With exposing everything.””
I looked at Claire.
“Why?””
My father answered.
“Because your mother was the one who helped hide it.””
The words hit harder than anything.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
Amelia stepped forward.
“She promised me my daughter would be returned.””
Her voice trembled.
“She lied.””
I looked at Lily.
My little girl was silent.
Taking in things no child should ever hear.
I knelt beside her.
“Sweetheart, go with Detective Harris for a minute.””
She looked scared.
“Daddy?””
“I’ll be right here.””
She nodded.
As she left, I turned back.
“Why keep Claire alive?””
My father looked at Vanessa’s name in the files.
“Because Claire knew too much.””
“She locked her away.””
“Yes.””
“And you let it happen?””
My father closed his eyes.
“No.””
“Then what did you do?””
“I tried to get Claire out.””
“Three years.””
“I failed.””
The anger returned.
“You failed?””
He looked at me.
“Daniel, I was fighting people you don’t understand.””
“People?””
He nodded.
“Your mother had connections.””
I stared.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
My father didn’t answer.
Then Vanessa’s voice came from behind us.
“Me.””
Everyone turned.
She stood at the entrance.
But this time she wasn’t afraid.
She looked calm.
Too calm.
Detective Harris moved immediately.
“Vanessa.””
She raised her hands.
“I’m not here to run.””
I stared.
“Why are you here?””
She looked at my father.
“To finish what you started.””
My father went pale.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
Vanessa smiled.
“I know exactly.””
She looked at Lily.
“She deserves the truth.””
Claire stepped forward.
“You don’t care about the truth.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“No.””
A pause.
“I care about revenge.””
The room went quiet.
She looked at me.
“Your father ruined my family.””
“What?””
“My sister lost everything because of him.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa looked at Amelia.
“Ask her.””
Amelia went still.
Vanessa continued:
“Ask her why she really came to the hospital that night.””
Amelia’s face changed.
And I realized something.
There was still another secret.
Another layer.
I looked at Amelia.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
She looked away.
Vanessa smiled.
“Tell him.””
Amelia whispered:
“I wasn’t a stranger.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I knew your family.””
“How?””
She took a breath.
“Because before you were born…”
She looked at my father.
May you like
“I was your father’s first wife.””
The room exploded into silence.
