Chapter 5: The Truth Written in Ink

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

But by then, the damage was already done.

The engagement party was over.

The decorations were still hanging from the ceiling.

The champagne glasses were still sitting on tables.

The cake still had our names written across the front.

Daniel and Vanessa.

A celebration of a future that no longer existed.

Now it looked like a crime scene.

I sat in my office downstairs while Detective Harris placed documents across my desk.

Claire sat beside me.

Lily was upstairs with my sister, Emma.

I hated that she had seen any of this.

I hated that an eight-year-old child had been the only person brave enough to expose the truth.

Detective Harris looked at me.

“Mr. Reed, we need you to tell us everything.””

I stared at the papers.

“I don’t even know what everything is anymore.””

He nodded.

“That’s understandable.””

“No, it isn’t.””

I looked at him.

“My wife disappeared three years ago.””

He glanced at Claire.

“And now she’s back.””

“Yes.””

“And your fiancée was keeping her locked in a room.””

“Yes.””

He wrote something down.

Then looked at Claire.

“Mrs. Reed, why were you taken?””

Claire sat quietly.

She had barely spoken since the police arrived.

Finally, she said:

“Because I found something.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“About Vanessa.””

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“Go on.””

Claire took a breath.

“After Daniel and I had our argument, I went to meet someone.””

My heart tightened.

“Who?””

She looked toward the hallway.

“Ethan.””

I felt the room shift.

“You knew Ethan before?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Claire looked down.

“He worked with my father.””

I frowned.

“My father-in-law?””

She nodded.

“My father discovered financial problems in the family company years ago.””

I stared.

“What financial problems?””

Claire’s voice lowered.

“Someone had been stealing money.””

The room became silent.

“And you thought it was Vanessa?””

Claire nodded.

“She had access.””

Detective Harris looked at the documents.

“And Ethan?””

“He helped me investigate.””

I looked away.

My head was spinning.

“So the night you disappeared…”

Claire closed her eyes.

“That was the night I found proof.””

“What proof?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“A recording.””

I frowned.

“A recording of what?””

“Vanessa.””

The name felt poisonous now.

Claire continued.

“She admitted everything.””

I stood.

“Why didn’t you come to me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I tried.””

The room went quiet.

“I called you.””

I shook my head.

“I never got a call.””

“Because Vanessa answered.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She had your phone that night.””

“No.””

“She told me you knew.””

I stepped back.

“She said you knew what I discovered.””

Claire’s voice broke.

“She said you were helping her.””

I looked at her.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

The pain in her voice was unbearable.

“I didn’t believe her at first.””

“What happened?””

Claire looked at her hands.

“She locked me away before I could find out the truth.””

Detective Harris wrote quickly.

“And Ethan?””

Claire hesitated.

That hesitation bothered me.

“What about Ethan?””

She looked at me.

“He disappeared the same night.””

I remembered the photograph.

The note.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

Then the office door opened.

Everyone turned.

Ethan stood there.

The detective immediately reached for his radio.

“How did you get in here?””

Ethan ignored him.

He looked at me.

“I need to tell you something.””

I didn’t move.

“You’ve had enough secrets around you.””

He nodded.

“That’s fair.””

“Then start talking.””

Ethan looked at Claire.

“I didn’t disappear because I wanted to.””

Claire looked hurt.

“Then why?””

“Because Vanessa tried to kill me.””

Nobody spoke.

Detective Harris stepped forward.

“Do you have proof?””

Ethan reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small device.

“A recording.””

Claire stood immediately.

“That’s the one.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Yes.””

My heart pounded.

“The recording Vanessa was trying to find?””

He nodded.

“She thought she destroyed it.””

I looked at the device.

“Play it.””

Ethan hesitated.

“Daniel…”

“Play it.””

He pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then Vanessa’s voice.

Clear.

Cold.

“If Claire talks, we lose everything.””

My blood turned to ice.

Another voice answered.

A man.

I recognized it.

Ethan.

“How far are you willing to go?””

Vanessa replied:

“As far as I need to.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

Detective Harris nodded.

“Answer it.””

I picked up.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a voice whispered.

“Daniel…”

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

It was Vanessa.

But she wasn’t calling from downstairs.

She was calling from somewhere else.

“Please,” she whispered.

“Don’t trust Claire.””

My grip tightened.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“Ask your wife what happened the night Lily was born.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Claire looked at me.

May you like

And for the first time since she returned…

she looked afraid.
