Chapter 12: The Second Child
Nobody spoke.
The silence after Vanessa’s confession felt louder than any scream.
Two babies.
Two missing children.
One family destroyed.
I stared at her.
“You expect me to believe you?””
Vanessa looked exhausted.
“I don’t expect anything from you anymore.””
That was the first honest thing I had heard from her.
She stepped inside.
Detective Harris immediately moved between us.
“Stay where you are.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I deserve that.””
Claire looked at her with disgust.
“You locked me away.””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
No excuses.
No denial.
The room froze.
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I did.””
My fists tightened.
“Why?””
She looked at Lily.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“Of losing everything.””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You destroyed everything.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“I know.””
That surprised me.
A person like Vanessa wasn’t supposed to admit guilt.
But she did.
And somehow that made it worse.
“Start talking,” I said.
She nodded.
“Eight years ago, I worked at the hospital where Lily was born.””
Claire froze.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
I stared.
“You were a nurse?””
“Yes.””
The room shifted.
Vanessa continued.
“That night changed my life.””
“How?””
She looked at Lily.
“There were two babies.””
Again.
The same sentence.
But this time, she explained.
“One was Amelia Hart’s daughter.””
“And the other?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Yours.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Claire stepped forward.
“You’re lying.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I wish I was.””
She looked at me.
“Your daughter was born sick.””
I remembered.
The hospital.
The fear.
The doctors rushing.
Vanessa continued.
“Amelia’s baby was healthy.””
Claire whispered:
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa’s face twisted with shame.
“I switched the records.””
Nobody moved.
The confession was so horrible it almost didn’t feel real.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because my sister had lost her baby.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“My sister couldn’t have children.””
Claire stared.
“So you stole someone else’s?””
Vanessa cried.
“Yes.””
The word hung there.
A terrible truth.
“I thought I could fix her life.””
“You destroyed three others.””
“I know.””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
My little girl.
The child Vanessa had used as a piece in her plan.
“But why keep Claire hidden?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Because Claire found out.””
Claire nodded slowly.
“The records.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa continued.
“She found Amelia.””
“And?””
“She found out Amelia was alive.””
I frowned.
“She was alive?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Yes.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Where is she?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“Then why are you here?””
She looked terrified.
“Because someone else knows.””
“Who?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“My father.””
The room went still.
I remembered the phone call.
The scar.
The impossible voice.
My father.
Vanessa continued:
“Your father and mine worked together.””
I felt sick.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“What did they do?””
She whispered:
“They built the entire lie.””
A phone suddenly buzzed.
Everyone turned.
It was Claire’s phone.
A message.
From an unknown number.
She opened it.
One photo.
A woman sitting in a chair.
Alive.
Older.
Terrified.
Amelia Hart.
Below the image was a message.
*Come alone if you want the truth about your daughter.*
Claire looked at me.
I already knew.
She was going.
“No.””
She froze.
“Daniel.””
“You’re not going alone.””
The phone buzzed again.
A second message appeared.
This time with a warning.
*Bring Daniel, and Amelia dies.*
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Detective Harris reached for the phone.
Too late.
The message disappeared.
And from upstairs came a scream.
Lily.
We all ran.
Her bedroom door was open.
The window was shattered.
And on her pillow was a note.
May you like
Five words.
*I found the real Lily.*
