Chapter 3: The Secret Vanessa Buried
The name on the phone screen burned into my mind.
Claire.
Not my Claire.
Not the woman standing behind me.
A different contact.
A saved number.
A conversation.
Vanessa had been texting someone named Claire.
The ballroom exploded with whispers.
“She has another phone?””
“Who is Claire?””
“Daniel, what is going on?””
I couldn’t answer.
I was too busy staring at Vanessa.
She looked like she had aged ten years in a few seconds.
“Give me the phone.””
I held it tighter.
“No.””
“Daniel.””
“No.””
The confidence in her voice was gone.
For the first time since I met her, Vanessa looked small.
Cornered.
I opened the message.
The last text said:
*She found the door. You need to fix this tonight.*
My stomach turned.
I looked at Claire.
She closed her eyes.
Like she already knew.
“What does this mean?”” I asked.
Vanessa said nothing.
“Answer me.””
She looked around the room.
At the guests.
At the cameras.
At the people watching her carefully.
Then she whispered:
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
Claire stepped beside me.
“Yes, he does.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You’re still protecting him?””
Claire’s face hardened.
“I protected him for three years.””
That sentence hit me harder than anything else.
Three years.
She had been alive.
Three years.
And I had buried her in my mind every day.
I turned to Claire.
“Why didn’t you escape?””
Her eyes broke.
“I tried.””
She looked at the room.
“The first month, I thought someone would find me.””
She touched the bruises on her wrist.
“Then I realized nobody knew where I was.””
My voice became quiet.
“Who put you there?””
Claire looked directly at Vanessa.
“She did.””
Everyone gasped.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?”” I asked.
Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.
“Because she ruined everything.””
Claire stared at her.
“You ruined your own life.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You think you’re innocent?””
I stepped between them.
“Enough.””
But neither listened.
Vanessa pointed at Claire.
“She was going to leave you.””
I froze.
“What?””
Claire looked shocked.
“That’s not true.””
Vanessa turned to me.
“She was going to take Lily and disappear.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
“You’re lying.””
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“You want to know why I kept her here?””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because I was trying to stop her from destroying your family.””
Claire looked at her like she was looking at a stranger.
“You kidnapped me because you wanted Daniel.””
Vanessa’s silence answered.
The room became unbearable.
I walked away from them.
My mind was breaking apart.
Every memory I had.
Every conversation.
Every moment with Vanessa.
Was it real?
Or was I just part of a plan?
Lily came beside me.
“Daddy?””
I looked down.
She was holding something.
A small envelope.
“Where did you get that?””
She pointed toward the hidden compartment.
“There was more inside.””
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Vanessa.
Standing outside this same room.
Three years earlier.
Beside her was another person.
A man.
I didn’t recognize him.
Until I turned the photo over.
There was writing on the back.
A date.
And a sentence.
*If anything happens to me, find the man who knows Vanessa’s real name.*
My heart stopped.
“Daniel?””
I looked up.
Claire was watching me.
“What is it?””
I showed her.
The moment she saw the picture, her face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know him?””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
Her lips parted.
But before she could answer, the ballroom lights suddenly shut off.
The room went completely dark.
People screamed.
Someone knocked over a glass.
Then a man’s voice came from the entrance.
Calm.
Cold.
Familiar.
“Daniel.””
The lights flickered back on.
Everyone turned.
A stranger stood in the doorway.
May you like
And Claire whispered the words that made my entire world collapse.
“That’s the man Vanessa told me was dead.””
