Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The stranger standing in the ballroom doorway didn’t look like a ghost.

That almost made it worse.

For three years, I had imagined every possible explanation for Claire’s disappearance.

A tragic accident.

A secret escape.

A decision she regretted.

But never this.

Never a man walking into my engagement party while my missing wife stood beside me and whispered that he was supposed to be dead.

The stranger looked around the room like he owned it.

Like he wasn’t walking into chaos.

Like he had expected to find exactly this.

Vanessa stared at him.

The color drained from her face.

“Ethan…”

The name escaped her lips before she could stop herself.

Everyone heard it.

I heard it.

And so did Claire.

Claire’s fingers tightened around my arm.

“You know him,” I said.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The man smiled faintly.

“That’s not the welcome I was hoping for.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

A man who had nothing to lose was dangerous.

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The stranger looked at me.

Then at Claire.

Then back at me.

“My name is Ethan Cole.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“You’re supposed to be gone.””

Ethan smiled.

“People disappear more easily than they die, Claire.””

A chill moved through the room.

I looked between them.

“You two know each other.””

Claire didn’t respond.

Ethan answered for her.

“We knew each other a long time ago.””

Vanessa suddenly moved.

“Everyone needs to leave.””

Her voice was sharp.

The guests looked confused.

Nobody moved.

A woman near the entrance crossed her arms.

“Vanessa, I think we deserve an explanation.””

Vanessa ignored her.

“This is a private family matter.””

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Private?””

I held up the phone.

“You locked my wife in a room.””

The room went silent again.

Vanessa looked at Claire.

“You really told him everything?””

Claire’s expression changed.

“Not yet.””

Something about those words bothered me.

Not yet.

Meaning there was more.

A lot more.

Ethan walked farther into the ballroom.

“I think Daniel deserves the entire truth.””

Vanessa looked at him with hatred.

“You should have stayed away.””

Ethan smiled.

“You tried to make sure I did.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

No one answered.

I looked at Ethan.

“Start talking.””

He glanced at Vanessa.

“She never planned to marry you because she loved you.””

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“Stop.””

“She needed access.””

“To what?””

Ethan looked directly at me.

“Your company.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa had always supported my business.

She helped me after Claire disappeared.

She told me she believed in me.

“She knew about your grandfather’s trust fund,” Ethan continued.

“She knew about the property your family owned. She knew exactly how much money would become available after your tenth year of marriage.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“No.””

She stepped forward.

“That’s ridiculous.””

“Is it?”” Ethan asked.

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folder.

“I found this in her office.””

Vanessa moved quickly.

Too quickly.

She grabbed toward him.

Ethan stepped back.

That reaction told me more than any document could.

I took the folder.

Inside were papers.

Financial documents.

Property records.

And my name.

Every page.

My hands started shaking.

“Why?””

Vanessa’s eyes softened.

For a second, I saw the woman I thought I knew.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at Claire.

“She took everything from me.””

Claire stared.

“What?””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You really don’t remember?””

“Remember what?””

“The night you disappeared.””

The words hung in the air.

I looked at Claire.

She looked confused.

Vanessa continued.

“She was going to leave Daniel.””

Claire’s face hardened.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

“You were going to take Lily and run.””

“No.””

“You had a ticket.””

Claire froze.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

“Claire?””

She looked away.

That hurt more than I expected.

“Daniel, I can explain.””

“Did you plan to leave?””

She swallowed.

“Not like she says.””

Vanessa smiled.

“There it is.””

I felt the room closing in.

Three years.

Three years of pain.

And somehow, the truth was becoming more complicated than the lie.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Vanessa is good at taking pieces of the truth and turning them into weapons.””

Vanessa glared at him.

“You’re one to talk.””

I looked at Ethan.

“What happened between all of you?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily spoke.

Small.

Quiet.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

She was standing near the door.

Holding another envelope.

My heart sank.

“Where did you find that?””

“Behind the painting.””

I took it from her.

The envelope had Claire’s handwriting.

My hands went numb.

Because I knew that handwriting.

I had seen it on birthday cards.

On grocery lists.

On notes she left beside my coffee.

I opened it.

Inside was one sentence.

Only one.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, it means Vanessa found out I knew the truth about Ethan.*

I looked up.

Ethan’s expression changed.

“What?””

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Let me see.””

I handed it to her.

The second she read it, she covered her mouth.

“Ethan…”

He looked away.

Like he already knew.

I stared at him.

“What truth?””

No one spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Ask him why he came back.””

The room went silent.

Ethan looked at me.

And for the first time, his confidence disappeared.

May you like

Because whatever answer he had…

he didn’t want to give it.
