Chapter 8: The Father I Buried
I spent twelve years believing my father was dead.
I had stood beside his coffin.
I had watched the dirt fall.
I had heard people say:
“He was a good man.””
But standing in my living room, listening to my daughter describe a man with his face and his scar…
I realized something terrifying.
Maybe I never knew my father at all.
Detective Harris looked at me.
“Mr. Reed, are you certain your father died?””
I stared at him.
“What kind of question is that?””
“A necessary one.””
“My entire family attended the funeral.””
“Did you see the body?””
I stopped.
The question hit harder than expected.
“No.””
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly, that tiny detail felt enormous.
My mother handled everything after the accident.
The paperwork.
The funeral arrangements.
The burial.
I was twenty-four.
Grieving.
Broken.
I trusted everyone around me.
Detective Harris wrote something down.
“Where is your mother now?””
I looked away.
“She passed away six years ago.””
Claire’s expression changed.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
She hesitated.
“Your father’s death was strange.””
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
“I investigated him.””
My anger rose.
“You investigated my father?””
“Because he was connected to Vanessa.””
I went silent.
The person I thought I knew.
The family I trusted.
The woman I loved.
Everything was connected.
Detective Harris sighed.
“Mr. Reed, we need to find Vanessa.””
I nodded.
“Where is she?””
“She escaped before we could question her.””
My hands clenched.
“Of course she did.””
Claire looked toward the window.
“She’s scared.””
“Good.””
“No.””
Claire looked at me.
“She’s scared because she knows what’s coming.””
“What does that mean?””
Before Claire answered, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
Everyone looked at it.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then a man’s voice.
Older.
Rough.
“Daniel.””
My entire body froze.
I couldn’t breathe.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it in childhood.
I had heard it telling me bedtime stories.
I had heard it teaching me how to ride a bike.
“Dad?””
Nobody moved.
The voice sighed.
“I knew Vanessa would eventually lose control.””
My knees nearly gave out.
“You’re alive.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because your mother and I needed everyone to believe I was gone.””
My mind couldn’t process the words.
“You let me think you were dead.””
“I did.””
“Why?””
The voice became quiet.
“Because I was protecting you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Protecting me?””
I looked at Claire.
“At what cost?””
No answer.
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
“I can’t tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because they’re watching.””
“Who?””
The line went silent.
Then he said:
“Your fiancée was never the person you should have feared most.””
My blood went cold.
“What does that mean?””
Before he answered, another voice came through the phone.
A woman.
Vanessa.
“Daniel, don’t listen to him!””
The call suddenly became chaotic.
Voices.
Movement.
Then my father’s voice again.
“Find the old factory.””
The line cut.
I stared at the phone.
Detective Harris immediately asked:
“What happened?””
I looked at him.
“My father is alive.””
No one reacted.
Not even Claire.
Because they were too shocked.
Then Lily quietly spoke.
“I told you.””
Everyone turned.
She looked frightened.
“I told you the man with the scar was real.””
I knelt beside her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked down.
“Because Vanessa said nobody would believe me.””
My heart broke.
I pulled her close.
“I believe you now.””
She nodded.
Then whispered:
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Grandpa told Mommy something.””
My entire body froze.
“When?””
“When he visited her.””
Claire stepped closer.
“What did he say?””
Lily looked at her.
“He said…”
She swallowed.
“He said the baby swap was never supposed to happen.””
The room became silent.
No one breathed.
Claire looked at me.
Detective Harris looked at the door.
And I realized something.
This was never just about Vanessa.
She wasn’t the beginning of the story.
She was only one piece.
A piece of something much bigger.
I turned to Claire.
“What baby swap?””
She looked away.
And that was when I knew.
She had still been hiding something.
“Claire.””
She closed her eyes.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She whispered:
“Of losing Lily.””
The words crushed me.
“What does that mean?””
Claire started crying.
“Daniel…”
She looked at me.
“The night Lily was born…”
A tear rolled down her face.
“The baby we brought home…”
She couldn’t finish.
May you like
She didn’t have to.
Because the silence answered for her.
