Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Door
I didn’t open the door immediately.
That was the strangest part.
Everyone expected me to.
The key was already turned.
My hand was already on the handle.
But my body refused to move.
Because opening that door meant accepting something impossible.
Claire was alive.
Or someone wanted me to believe she was.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
Her voice was softer now.
Almost gentle.
Almost convincing.
“Don’t do this.””
I turned slowly.
“What did you say?””
She swallowed.
“You don’t know what’s happening.””
I looked at the locked door.
Then at her.
“You knew about this.””
“No.””
“You knew there was someone inside.””
Her eyes moved toward Lily.
Then back to me.
“Your daughter is confused.””
Lily screamed.
“I’m not confused!””
She ran to me and grabbed my jacket.
“Daddy, please don’t listen to her.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Lily, go upstairs.””
“No.””
“I said go upstairs.””
The command in her voice made several guests step back.
That was the moment everyone saw it.
The Vanessa I knew was gone.
The woman who smiled for photographs.
The woman who held my hand during dinner.
The woman who cried when I told her I was afraid of loving again.
She wasn’t there anymore.
Standing in front of me was someone desperate.
Someone cornered.
I turned back toward the door.
“Claire?””
For several seconds, there was nothing.
Then:
“Daniel…”
A weak cough.
“She’s lying to you.””
Vanessa grabbed my shoulder.
“Don’t open it.””
I pulled away.
“Why?””
She had no answer.
That was answer enough.
I opened the door.
Slowly.
The smell hit me first.
Dust.
Cold air.
And something else.
Something medical.
The room was dark.
A small lamp flickered in the corner.
Then I saw her.
My knees almost gave out.
Claire was sitting on the floor.
Alive.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face was thinner.
There were bruises on her wrists.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
“Claire…”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel.””
I stepped inside.
I wanted to run to her.
I wanted to hold her.
I wanted to ask a thousand questions.
But one question came first.
“Why?””
Her lips trembled.
“I tried to tell you.””
She looked behind me.
At Vanessa.
And fear crossed her face.
“Not here.””
Vanessa moved forward.
“She’s manipulating you.””
Claire flinched.
That tiny reaction told me everything.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What happened?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You’re really going to believe her?””
“She has been locked in a room.””
“You don’t know the whole story.””
“Then tell me.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
The guests outside were watching.
Phones were coming out.
Whispers filled the room.
Vanessa noticed.
Her face changed.
“Everyone needs to leave.””
Nobody moved.
A man near the entrance said, “Daniel, should we call someone?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“No.””
The authority in her voice was shocking.
I stared at her.
“Why not?””
She looked at me.
And for a second, I saw desperation.
“Because you don’t understand what she did.””
Claire pushed herself up.
“She’s trying to make you think I’m the villain.””
“Stop lying!”” Vanessa shouted.
The room went silent.
Claire froze.
Vanessa took a breath and lowered her voice.
“Daniel, ask her why she disappeared.””
I looked at Claire.
She looked away.
And my heart sank.
Because that was the one question I had never stopped asking.
“Claire,” I whispered.
“Why did you leave?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t.””
The answer was immediate.
Certain.
“I never left you.””
“Then where were you?””
She looked at Vanessa.
“I was taken.””
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa laughed.
A small, bitter laugh.
“Taken?””
“Yes.””
“By who?””
Claire didn’t answer.
She just stared at her.
And I realized something.
They weren’t two women telling different versions of the same story.
They were two people who knew exactly what had happened.
And only one of them was afraid the truth would come out.
I walked closer to Claire.
“Tell me everything.””
She grabbed my hand.
Her fingers were cold.
“Vanessa wasn’t supposed to marry you.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“She didn’t choose you because she loved you.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Claire continued.
“She chose you because she needed something from me.””
“What?””
Claire looked toward the old wooden walls.
Then whispered:
“Proof.””
A strange sound came from behind us.
A phone vibrating.
Everyone looked around.
It was coming from Vanessa’s purse.
Her face changed.
She reached for it.
I moved faster.
I grabbed the purse.
“Daniel, don’t.””
I opened it.
Inside was a phone I had never seen before.
The screen was lit.
One message.
One name.
And three words.
My hands started shaking.
May you like
Because the message wasn’t from a stranger.
It was from someone who was supposed to be dead.
