Chapter 8: The Mother Who Came Back

Nobody moved.

The backyard became a place where the past and present collided.

Marcus stared at Elena.

Seven years of questions.

Seven years of grief.

Seven years of telling himself he had to accept something he never understood.

And now she was standing ten feet away.

Alive.

“You’re alive,” Marcus whispered.

Elena nodded.

“I am.””

His eyes filled.

Not with happiness.

Not yet.

There was too much pain between them.

Too many years.

Too many unanswered nights.

“Why didn’t you come home?””

The question broke her.

Elena looked at Nia.

“I tried.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You had seven years.””

“I know.””

“Seven birthdays.””

“I know.””

“Seven Christmas mornings.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“I know.””

Marcus’s voice cracked.

“She thought you forgot her.””

Elena looked like she had been physically hurt.

“I never forgot her.””

Nia stood frozen.

Her teddy bear hung from one hand.

Elena slowly stepped forward.

But stopped.

Like she was afraid she no longer had the right.

“Nia…”

The little girl looked at her.

“You’re my mom?””

Elena nodded.

“Yes.””

Nia looked toward Marcus.

Then back.

“Why did you leave?””

Elena’s face broke.

“I didn’t.””

“Dad said you died.””

Marcus looked down.

Elena nodded.

“I know.””

“Then why?””

The question was small.

But it carried seven years of pain.

Elena wiped her tears.

“Because someone made sure I couldn’t come back.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Everyone looked at her.

The old Vanessa was gone.

Now she looked desperate.

“She abandoned you.””

Nia flinched.

Marcus stepped between them.

“No more.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You’re choosing her?””

Marcus looked at Elena.

Then at Nia.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“This is pointless.””

Marcus turned.

“You’re leaving.””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“You think this ends because you found her?””

Marcus watched him carefully.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

That was enough.

Marcus understood.

There was still something they were hiding.

Elena noticed too.

“There’s another reason they wanted custody.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

Elena took a breath.

“When I discovered the money transfers, I found something else.””

“What?””

“Vanessa wasn’t just stealing from my company.””

Marcus waited.

“She was moving money through accounts connected to Daniel.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Marcus saw it.

Confirmation.

“They were working together.””

Elena nodded.

“For years.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You make it sound so simple.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Wasn’t it?””

“No.””

Her voice became angry.

“You had everything.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

“You had the perfect life.””

Vanessa pointed at Elena.

“The perfect wife.””

Then at Nia.

“The perfect daughter.””

Her voice cracked.

“And I was always the person standing outside.””

Marcus looked at her.

“That doesn’t justify destroying a child.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You don’t understand what it feels like to be invisible.””

Elena stepped forward.

“You weren’t invisible.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You had everything I wanted.””

“No.””

Elena shook her head.

“You wanted what I had. That’s different.””

The sentence hit harder than an insult.

Because it was true.

Daniel suddenly moved.

Fast.

He grabbed the recorder from Vanessa’s hand.

Marcus reacted immediately.

“What are you doing?””

Daniel backed away.

“This is the only thing protecting us.””

Marcus looked at the device.

“The recording.””

Daniel smiled.

“You don’t know what’s on it.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Then tell me.””

Daniel tightened his grip.

“No.””

Elena looked at him.

“You always were a coward.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You should be grateful I helped you.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus turned.

“You helped her?””

Daniel realized too late.

He had revealed something.

Elena looked at him with disgust.

“You were the one who hid me.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Daniel sighed.

“Fine.””

The calm mask disappeared.

“Yes.””

He looked at Marcus.

“I helped Elena disappear.””

Nia gasped.

Marcus felt rage burning through him.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Because she promised me half of everything.””

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Vanessa looked at him.

“You idiot.””

Daniel laughed.

“You think I’m the idiot?””

He stepped closer.

“You promised me Marcus would never find out.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“You planned to replace me.””

Vanessa said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“You wanted his money. His company. His daughter.””

Nia stepped back.

Marcus immediately pulled her close.

Daniel looked at her.

“Don’t pretend you’re better than me.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re the one who ruined everything.””

The two people who had spent years hiding the truth were now turning on each other.

Marcus watched.

And waited.

Because he knew something.

People revealed the truth when they were trying to save themselves.

Then Daniel looked at Marcus.

“You want to know the worst part?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Daniel smiled.

“Vanessa didn’t just hide Elena.””

He raised the recorder.

“She recorded the night of the accident.””

Elena’s face went pale.

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

Daniel continued:

“She has the proof.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“No.””

Marcus stared.

“Proof of what?””

Daniel looked directly at Elena.

“The reason you survived.””

Elena whispered:

“Marcus…”

Daniel pressed a button on the recorder.

A voice filled the backyard.

A voice from seven years ago.

Elena’s voice.

Terrified.

And another voice.

Vanessa’s voice.

Saying something that made Marcus’s entire world collapse.

“I don’t care what happens to you.””

The recording continued.

May you like

And Marcus heard the sentence that changed everything.

“Because once you’re gone, Marcus will finally be mine.””
