Chapter 10: The Final Trap

The room fell silent.

Not the quiet kind of silence.

The kind that came when everyone realized they had just stepped into something much darker than they imagined.

Marcus stared at the small recorder inside the evidence bag.

The police officer held it carefully.

“We found it hidden underneath the bottom drawer in her office.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She didn’t look surprised.

That was what frightened him.

She looked defeated.

Like she knew this moment had finally arrived.

“Play it,” Marcus said.

Vanessa’s eyes snapped toward him.

“No.””

The officer looked at her.

“Ma’am, you don’t get to decide that anymore.””

He pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then Vanessa’s voice.

Quiet.

Controlled.

Talking to someone.

“If anything happens to me, make sure Marcus gets blamed.””

Marcus felt Nia move closer to him.

He placed an arm around her.

The recording continued.

A man’s voice answered.

Daniel.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“I’m saying if this fails, I need someone else to take the fall.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Daniel’s face went pale.

The officer turned toward him.

The recording continued.

“Marcus already looks unstable,” Vanessa said.

“Everyone knows he lost Elena once. They’ll believe he couldn’t handle losing control again.””

Daniel’s voice sounded nervous.

“Vanessa, this is too far.””

“You didn’t think it was too far when you helped me.””

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“We were supposed to get custody.””

“Yes.””

“And the money.””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you talking about Marcus taking the blame?””

Vanessa’s voice became colder.

“Because there can only be one victim.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

The words hit harder than he expected.

Not because he was shocked.

Because he finally understood.

Vanessa never had a backup plan.

She had several.

If Marcus lost custody, she won.

If Elena disappeared again, she won.

If Daniel got caught, she survived.

And if Marcus was blamed for everything…

She still won.

The recording continued.

Daniel whispered:

“What about Nia?””

A long silence.

Then Vanessa answered:

“She’ll adjust.””

Marcus opened his eyes.

His entire body went still.

The police officer looked at Nia.

Then back at Vanessa.

Even the officer seemed disturbed.

Marcus walked forward.

“You said that about my daughter?””

Vanessa looked at him.

For a moment, there was nothing left to hide.

No excuse.

No fake tears.

No explanation.

Just a woman who had finally been exposed.

“You think you know everything.””

Marcus stared.

“I know enough.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You know what I did.””

She looked toward Elena.

“But you don’t know why.””

Elena’s expression hardened.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Of course you don’t want him to know.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

The police officer stepped closer.

“Maybe everyone should continue this somewhere more appropriate.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Ask Elena what happened before the accident.””

Elena froze.

Marcus noticed.

A small reaction.

Almost invisible.

But he saw it.

“What happened?””

Elena looked at him.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

His voice softened.

But he needed the truth.

“Not another secret.””

Elena lowered her eyes.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She swallowed.

“After I came back.””

Marcus looked hurt.

“You mean after seven years?””

Elena closed her eyes.

“I made mistakes.””

The answer surprised him.

Vanessa smiled slightly.

“There it is.””

Marcus looked at Elena.

“What mistake?””

Elena took a deep breath.

“I discovered Vanessa’s theft.””

Marcus nodded.

“We know that.””

“But I didn’t just confront her.””

Silence.

“What did you do?””

Elena looked ashamed.

“I threatened to expose her publicly.””

Marcus waited.

“I told her I would destroy her life.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You see?””

Marcus looked at Elena.

“You threatened her.””

“Yes.””

“But you didn’t deserve what happened.””

Elena’s eyes filled.

“No.””

Marcus believed her.

Because he saw the difference.

Elena carried guilt.

Vanessa carried excuses.

The officer motioned toward the door.

“We need everyone’s statements.””

As they walked inside, Marcus stayed beside Nia.

She held both his hand and Elena’s.

A small gesture.

But it meant everything.

For seven years, Marcus thought he had failed his daughter by not saving her mother.

Now he realized someone had spent seven years making sure he never knew he could.

Hours later, the house was filled with investigators.

Photos were taken.

Documents were collected.

The hidden room became evidence.

The suitcase remained by the door.

A symbol of the moment everything changed.

Marcus sat in the living room.

Elena sat across from him.

Nia had fallen asleep upstairs.

For the first time in years, Marcus and Elena were alone.

Neither knew what to say.

Finally, Elena whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus looked down.

“I don’t know how to feel.””

“I understand.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You don’t.””

Elena accepted that.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised him.

Marcus looked at her.

“I buried you.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

“I stood at your grave.””

“I know.””

“I told Nia stories about you.””

Elena covered her mouth.

“I know.””

“How?””

She looked toward the staircase.

“I watched.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“I stayed close.””

His expression changed.

“You were here?””

“Sometimes.””

The pain in her voice was unbearable.

“I watched her grow up from a distance.””

Marcus stood.

“You saw her and didn’t come in?””

Elena cried.

“I wanted to.””

“Then why?””

“Because every time I thought about coming back, I remembered Vanessa’s threats.””

Marcus looked away.

He was angry.

But he also saw the fear she had lived with.

A knock interrupted them.

The officer entered.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“We found something else.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

The officer held a file.

“Financial records.””

He handed it over.

Marcus opened it.

His face changed.

Because the records were not from Vanessa.

They were from Daniel.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

A name Marcus knew.

A name that made Elena stand.

“No…”

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

She stared at the paper.

“That account belonged to my father.””

Marcus froze.

Elena whispered:

“Daniel wasn’t helping Vanessa steal from me.””

May you like

She looked terrified.

“He was helping someone else.””
