Chapter 7: The Voice In The Dark
Marcus stood frozen by the back door.
The cold night air moved across his face, but he barely felt it.
All he could hear was that voice.
A man.
Someone standing in the backyard with Vanessa.
Someone who had just said the words that turned Marcus’s blood cold.
*Once Marcus is gone, Nia will belong to us.*
For a moment, Marcus couldn’t move.
Not because he was afraid.
Because he was trying to understand how many people had been involved in destroying his family.
How many people had watched Nia suffer.
How many people had planned around a little girl’s pain.
Behind him, Caleb whispered:
“Dad?””
Marcus raised one finger.
Silence.
Everyone stopped.
He slowly stepped toward the kitchen window.
The backyard was dark except for the small light above the garden shed.
Vanessa stood there.
Her back was turned.
She was holding the recorder.
And someone else stood in front of her.
A man.
Marcus couldn’t see his face.
Not yet.
He moved closer.
The voices became clearer.
“You promised me this would work,” Vanessa said.
Her voice was different.
Not the confident woman who controlled the living room.
Not the loving wife she pretended to be.
This was the voice of someone cornered.
The man answered calmly.
“It would have worked if you hadn’t panicked.””
“I didn’t panic.””
“You brought the suitcase out too early.””
Marcus stopped.
The suitcase.
Even now, they were discussing it like it was a failed performance.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Marcus wasn’t supposed to come home.””
The man laughed quietly.
“And that’s why you should have planned better.””
Marcus felt his hands tighten.
The man knew.
He knew everything.
Vanessa looked toward the house.
“He’s suspicious now.””
“He was always going to be suspicious.””
“You said he would look unstable.””
“He does.””
Marcus felt anger rise.
They weren’t just trying to remove Nia.
They were trying to destroy him.
The man continued.
“The recordings are enough.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. He found Elena’s letter.””
Silence.
The man’s posture changed.
“What?””
Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.
Even this man knew about Elena.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“He found the hidden room.””
The man cursed quietly.
“You told me nobody knew about that room.””
“I didn’t know he would break into my office.””
Marcus almost laughed.
Break into?
After everything she had done?
The man looked toward the house.
“Does he know?””
“No.””
“Does he know about the recording?””
“No.””
“Then we still have time.””
Marcus narrowed his eyes.
Recording.
The one Vanessa never wanted him to hear.
The man reached into his coat.
Marcus leaned closer.
The movement exposed part of his face.
And then Marcus recognized him.
His stomach dropped.
Daniel Whitmore.
His former best friend.
The man who had attended Elena’s funeral.
The man who had held Marcus’s shoulder and told him:
“You’ll get through this.””
The same man who had secretly helped Vanessa build a case against him.
Marcus stepped backward.
The betrayal hurt differently than Vanessa’s.
Vanessa was cruel.
Daniel was someone he trusted.
Someone he called family.
Behind him, Ava covered her mouth.
She recognized him too.
“No…”
Marcus looked at her.
“You know him?””
Ava nodded slowly.
“Mom used to meet him.””
“How long?””
Ava looked terrified.
“I thought it was about business.””
Marcus looked back outside.
Daniel handed Vanessa a small envelope.
“We need to move Elena.””
Marcus froze.
Elena.
The name felt like a shock.
Vanessa grabbed the envelope.
“Where is she?””
Daniel looked around.
“She’s not the problem.””
“Then what is?””
“The daughter.””
Marcus’s entire body went still.
Nia.
They were talking about Nia.
Daniel continued:
“Once Marcus loses custody, the court won’t let him keep her. You know that.””
Vanessa nodded.
“And then?””
Daniel smiled.
A cold smile.
“Then you become the only person left who can take care of her.””
Marcus felt sick.
They weren’t trying to send Nia away.
They wanted control.
They wanted her.
The little girl who had already lost her mother once.
The little girl who had spent the afternoon believing her father didn’t want her.
They wanted to turn her into a possession.
Marcus stepped outside.
The door closing behind him made both of them turn.
Vanessa’s face immediately changed.
“Marcus.””
Daniel went pale.
For once, there was no explanation ready.
No performance.
No excuse.
Marcus walked toward them.
“You two should have checked the cameras.””
Daniel looked around.
“What?””
Marcus pointed toward the house.
“Everything you said.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
A flicker of fear.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“You helped her.””
Daniel said nothing.
“You helped her lie about my daughter.””
Daniel recovered.
“You don’t understand the situation.””
Marcus almost smiled.
“No.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“I understand perfectly.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Marcus, listen.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
“You had seven years to explain.””
She froze.
“You knew Elena was alive.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“You told him?””
Marcus saw it.
The panic.
The anger.
The blame.
Their partnership was cracking.
“You both used me,” Marcus said.
Daniel shook his head.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Was Elena supposed to disappear?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Then a sound came from behind the shed.
A woman’s voice.
“Marcus.””
Everyone turned.
The world stopped.
Because standing in the darkness was a woman Marcus thought he had buried.
Elena.
Older.
Tired.
Tears in her eyes.
Alive.
Nia saw her from the doorway.
And whispered:
“Mom?””
Elena covered her mouth.
The sound she made was the sound of a mother seeing her child after years apart.
“Nia…”
The little girl didn’t move.
She couldn’t.
Her whole life had taught her one truth.
Her mother was gone.
But now she was standing there.
Alive.
Marcus looked between Elena and Vanessa.
Everything he knew had changed.
Then Daniel whispered:
“This was not supposed to happen.””
Marcus turned.
“What wasn’t?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“Her coming back.””
And Marcus realized something.
May you like
Daniel wasn’t afraid of Elena.
He was afraid of what Elena could reveal.
