Chapter 2: The Lie She Built
Marcus felt Nia’s fingers tighten around his hand.
He knew that voice.
He had heard it before at charity events, business meetings, and family gatherings.
But he never expected to hear it connected to a lie about his own daughter.
The person on the phone was Daniel Whitmore.
Marcus’s former business partner.
The man who had once been his closest friend.
The man who had stood beside him at his wedding to Vanessa and toasted their future together.
Marcus held the phone away from his ear.
Everyone in the room was watching him.
Vanessa looked terrified now.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Terrified.
Marcus slowly lifted the phone again.
“Daniel.””
Silence.
Then:
“Marcus?””
Daniel’s voice changed immediately.
A mistake.
A tiny hesitation.
But Marcus heard it.
“Interesting,” Marcus said.
“You sound surprised.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“What exactly did you tell him?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Give me the phone.””
Marcus moved back.
“No.””
“You’re misunderstanding.””
“No, I’m trying to understand why my wife sent a video of my crying daughter to my former business partner.””
Daniel spoke through the phone.
“Marcus, maybe we should talk privately.””
Marcus almost laughed.
Privately.
That was the word people used when they wanted to hide something.
“No,” Marcus said.
“I think everyone should hear this.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You’re embarrassing me.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You packed my daughter’s suitcase.””
The sentence silenced her.
Nia stood beside him, still holding her teddy bear.
Marcus noticed something then.
The suitcase wasn’t full.
Only a few clothes.
Almost like Vanessa had never planned to actually send Nia away.
She had planned something else.
A performance.
A scene.
A story.
He looked back at the phone.
“Daniel, what did Vanessa tell you?””
Another pause.
Then Daniel sighed.
“She said you were becoming unstable.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“Unstable?””
“She said you were angry. That you were threatening to send Nia away.””
Nia looked up.
Marcus felt something inside him break.
Someone had taken his love for his daughter and turned it into a weapon.
“Did she tell you I abused her?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
“You told him I hurt my own child?””
Vanessa’s voice became defensive.
“I was worried.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You weren’t worried.””
He held up the phone.
“You were building evidence.””
Nobody spoke.
Even Caleb looked shocked.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You’re making accusations because you’re emotional.””
Marcus looked at the woman he had married.
The woman he had trusted.
The woman who had kissed his daughter goodnight for years.
“When did you start hating her?””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“I never hated her.””
“Then why would you do this?””
She looked away.
That small movement told him everything.
Ava quietly walked toward Nia.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
Nia looked at her.
“For what?””
Ava swallowed.
“For not saying something sooner.””
Marcus heard it.
He turned.
“What do you mean?””
Ava looked nervous.
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“She’s confused.””
“No,” Ava said.
For the first time, she didn’t sound afraid.
“She’s not confused.””
Vanessa stared at her daughter.
Ava took a breath.
“Mom has been planning this for months.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at Ava.
“What has she been planning?””
Ava looked toward the staircase.
Then toward Vanessa.
“She said once Nia was gone, everything would finally belong to us.””
Marcus felt cold.
“Us?””
Ava shook her head.
“I don’t know what she meant.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
“No,” Marcus said.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Let her finish.””
Ava looked down.
“She said you were the only thing standing between her and a better life.””
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Marcus watched her carefully.
Then he noticed something.
The way she kept looking toward the hallway.
Not at him.
Not at Nia.
At the hallway.
Like she was waiting for something.
Or someone.
Marcus followed her eyes.
Nothing.
Just the empty corridor.
But the feeling remained.
Something else was happening.
Something bigger.
He turned back to the phone.
Daniel was still connected.
“Daniel.””
“Yes?””
“Why were you involved?””
Silence.
Then Daniel answered.
“I wasn’t.””
Marcus smiled without humor.
“You were on a call with my wife about my daughter.””
“That doesn’t mean—”
“Daniel.””
Marcus’s voice sharpened.
“You sent Vanessa legal documents last month.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Marcus saw it.
A flash of fear.
“How do you know that?”” she asked.
He ignored her.
“Daniel, what documents did you send my wife?””
The silence on the other end lasted too long.
Then Daniel finally spoke.
“Marcus… you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Vanessa wasn’t trying to get rid of Nia.””
Marcus frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“She was trying to make you lose custody.””
The room seemed to tilt.
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
The suitcase.
The recording.
The accusation.
It all connected.
She hadn’t wanted Nia gone.
She wanted Marcus to look like the reason Nia disappeared.
She wanted him blamed.
She wanted him powerless.
Marcus slowly walked toward Vanessa.
“What was your plan?””
Vanessa said nothing.
“What was your plan?””
Her eyes filled with anger.
Then something worse.
Desperation.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain it.””
She looked at Nia.
And for one terrifying second, Marcus saw no guilt.
Only calculation.
“I needed proof.””
Marcus felt his stomach drop.
“Proof of what?””
Vanessa’s voice became quiet.
“Proof that you were dangerous.””
Nia stepped closer to Marcus.
“Dad…”
He put his arm around her.
Vanessa reached into her purse.
Marcus immediately noticed.
“Don’t.””
She stopped.
The room froze.
Then Marcus saw what she was holding.
A small recorder.
And a red light was blinking.
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“I already have what I need.””
Marcus stared at the device.
Because suddenly he understood.
The suitcase.
The tears.
The accusation.
It was never about making Nia leave.
It was about making Marcus look like the monster.
And then Vanessa said the words that made his blood turn cold.
“I recorded everything I needed before you walked through that door.””
But Marcus knew one thing she didn’t.
She had forgotten one very important detail.
May you like
The house cameras were still running.
And they had recorded everything Vanessa did before he arrived.
