Chapter 13: The Truth Behind Elena’s Silence

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

The silence afterward felt heavier than anything Marcus had heard that night.

Not Vanessa’s confession.

Not Daniel’s betrayal.

Not the discovery that Elena had been alive for seven years.

This was different.

Because Richard’s final words were not an accusation against Vanessa.

They were aimed directly at Elena.

*Elena wasn’t just hiding from Vanessa.*

*She was hiding what she did to Marcus.*

Marcus looked at Elena.

The woman he had loved.

The woman he had mourned.

The woman standing in front of him after seven years of believing she was gone.

For the first time since she returned, doubt appeared.

Not because he wanted to believe Richard.

Because he had learned the most painful lesson of his life.

People could hide entire worlds behind familiar faces.

“Elena,” Marcus said quietly.

She looked down.

That was enough.

His heart sank.

“What did he mean?””

Nobody spoke.

Nia looked between them.

“Mom?””

Elena closed her eyes.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I wanted to tell you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Everyone says that.””

His voice was not angry.

That made it worse.

“Everyone who hides something says they wanted to tell the truth eventually.””

Elena looked at him.

“You’re right.””

The answer surprised him.

She took a breath.

“There is something I never told you.””

The officer remained nearby, listening carefully.

Aaron looked away.

Like he already knew.

Marcus noticed.

“You knew?””

Aaron nodded.

“I knew part of it.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Aaron lowered his eyes.

“I was afraid.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Everyone was afraid.””

He looked around the room.

“And somehow I was the only person who didn’t get to know the truth.””

Elena stepped closer.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

He held up his hand.

“Tell me.””

She nodded slowly.

“When I found out about Vanessa stealing money, I didn’t just investigate her.””

Marcus waited.

“I investigated everyone around her.””

“And?””

Elena looked at Aaron.

Then back at Marcus.

“I found evidence that someone was planning to destroy our family.””

Marcus frowned.

“You mean Richard.””

“Yes.””

“But what does that have to do with me?””

Elena swallowed.

“Because Richard wasn’t interested in your money.””

A pause.

“He was interested in you.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

“He believed you were the reason he could never control my father’s company.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does when you know the truth.””

Elena walked toward the table.

She picked up the old photograph of their family.

“Before we met, Richard tried to convince my father to merge businesses with him.””

Marcus listened.

“My father refused.””

“Why?””

“Because he didn’t trust him.””

Elena looked at Nia.

“He said Richard didn’t want partnership. He wanted ownership.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“So Richard hated your family.””

“Yes.””

“And Vanessa?””

Elena looked toward the evidence.

“Vanessa was easy to manipulate.””

Marcus understood.

“She wanted what you had.””

“Yes.””

The room was quiet.

Then Elena said:

“But the part Richard is talking about…”

She stopped.

Marcus waited.

“The part I hid from you…”

Her voice broke.

“That was my fault.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“What did you do?””

Elena sat down.

“I made a deal.””

Nobody moved.

“With Richard?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“With Vanessa.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

“The night before the accident, Vanessa came to me.””

Elena looked at the floor.

“She was scared.””

“Scared?””

“Yes.””

“She told me Richard had threatened her.””

Marcus frowned.

“You believed her?””

“I did.””

“Why?””

“Because she showed me proof.””

Elena looked up.

“She showed me documents proving Richard had been manipulating her.””

Marcus was silent.

“And you made a deal?””

Elena nodded.

“I told her I would help her escape him.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Escape?””

“Yes.””

Elena’s voice became softer.

“I thought I could fix everything.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You trusted her.””

“Yes.””

“And she betrayed you.””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

But something still bothered him.

“Then why did Richard say you betrayed me?””

Elena looked at him.

“Because I did.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

She wiped her tears.

“When Vanessa asked for help, I agreed to disappear temporarily.””

The room went silent.

Marcus stared.

“No.””

“I thought I could protect you and Nia.””

“You thought leaving us would protect us?””

“I was wrong.””

Marcus stepped back.

The pain on his face was worse than anger.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“I know.””

“You let Nia grow up thinking she wasn’t loved.””

Elena cried.

“I know.””

“Do you know what that did to her?””

Elena looked at Nia.

“I know.””

Nia stood silently.

Small.

Confused.

Broken between two parents.

Marcus saw it.

And that hurt most.

Elena whispered:

“I made a choice based on fear.””

Marcus looked away.

“And you took seven years from us.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was painful.

But it was real.

Then Nia spoke.

“Mom.””

Everyone looked.

She walked slowly toward Elena.

“Did you leave because you didn’t want me?””

Elena immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why didn’t you come back?””

Elena fell to her knees.

“Because every time I tried, something happened.””

“What?””

“Threats.””

“From Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

Nia looked down.

“And you believed her?””

Elena nodded.

“Yes.””

The little girl was quiet.

Then she asked:

“Did you miss me?””

Elena broke.

“Every second.””

Nia stared.

Then slowly moved forward.

Not running.

Not forgiving everything.

Just moving.

Elena hugged her.

Marcus watched.

The scene he had dreamed of for years.

But it was complicated.

Beautiful.

Painful.

A family healing while still bleeding.

Then the officer’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Everyone looked at him.

He listened for several seconds.

Then said:

“We have a problem.””

Marcus stood.

“What happened?””

The officer looked at Aaron.

“The flash drive wasn’t the only thing taken from Richard.””

Aaron frowned.

“What?””

The officer looked at Marcus.

“He has a copy.””

Marcus felt uneasy.

“A copy of what?””

The officer hesitated.

“Everything.””

A message arrived on Marcus’s phone.

From Richard.

One sentence.

*You wanted the truth. Now come hear the rest.*

Then another message appeared.

A photo.

Nia.

Taken minutes earlier.

Inside the house.

May you like

Marcus’s blood turned cold.

Because Richard had been watching them the entire time.
