Chapter 3: The Footage Nobody Was Supposed To See
For the first time that afternoon, Vanessa looked like she wanted to leave.
Not Nia.
Not the house.
Her.
Marcus watched her carefully.
The woman standing in front of him was someone he barely recognized.
The person he married would have been embarrassed by what happened.
This person was worried about getting caught.
“Where did you put the recorder?”” Marcus asked.
Vanessa smiled.
“You think I’m going to tell you?””
“No.””
Marcus looked toward the security panel near the entrance.
“But I don’t need you to.””
Her smile disappeared.
Marcus walked toward the wall.
The small screen displayed the home security system.
Four cameras.
Front entrance.
Living room.
Kitchen.
Driveway.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“No.””
Marcus stopped.
That single word told him everything.
He turned slowly.
“You forgot about the cameras.””
Vanessa recovered quickly.
“You can’t use those.””
“Why?””
“Because they’re private.””
Marcus almost laughed.
“You recorded my daughter crying and sent it to people claiming I hurt her.””
He pointed toward the screen.
“These cameras recorded what actually happened.””
Vanessa’s anger returned.
“You’re acting like I’m the villain.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You packed a twelve-year-old girl’s suitcase.””
“She’s not twelve.””
“Nine, Vanessa.””
His voice cracked.
“She’s nine.””
Nia looked down.
Marcus immediately regretted raising his voice.
He knelt beside her.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart.””
She nodded but didn’t speak.
Marcus hated that.
He hated seeing his daughter become quiet because someone had made her afraid to use her own voice.
He stood again.
“I want to see the footage.””
Vanessa moved between him and the screen.
“No.””
Marcus stopped.
“Move.””
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
She lowered her voice.
“Marcus, if you destroy this family over her—”
He stared at her.
“Over her?””
The question hung in the air.
Then he said:
“You mean my daughter?””
Vanessa looked away.
That was when Caleb finally spoke.
“Mom…”
Everyone turned.
Caleb stood near the sofa.
His face was filled with disappointment.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
Caleb shook his head.
“I understand.””
He looked at Nia.
“You scared her.””
Vanessa’s expression softened.
“Caleb—”
“No.””
His voice became stronger.
“You made her think Dad didn’t love her.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
But no words came.
Marcus walked to the security system and opened the footage archive.
The recording from earlier appeared.
2:03 PM.
The screen showed Vanessa walking into the living room with the suitcase.
No Nia.
No tears.
No argument.
Just Vanessa.
Calm.
Planning.
Marcus pressed play.
Everyone watched.
On the screen, Vanessa placed the suitcase down.
Then she called Nia downstairs.
The little girl appeared holding her teddy bear.
Marcus felt his hand tighten.
He already knew what was coming.
But seeing it was different.
Seeing his daughter’s confusion.
Seeing Vanessa’s cold expression.
It hurt.
The footage continued.
Vanessa said something Marcus couldn’t hear because the camera had no audio.
Then Nia’s face changed.
She looked scared.
A few minutes later, she was crying.
Marcus stopped the video.
The room was silent.
“Turn on the audio.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
The cameras had microphones.
She knew.
The security system loaded the recording.
Then Vanessa’s voice filled the room.
“Your father has a new family now.””
Nia’s face went white.
Marcus closed his eyes.
He heard the words again.
“He doesn’t want you anymore.””
The recording continued.
Nia’s small voice whispered:
“My dad wouldn’t say that.””
Vanessa answered:
“You don’t know your father as well as you think.””
Marcus opened his eyes.
He didn’t look angry anymore.
He looked devastated.
Because he realized something.
For months, Vanessa had probably been planting little doubts.
Small comments.
Small wounds.
Trying to make Nia question whether she belonged.
The video kept playing.
Then came the moment Marcus hadn’t expected.
Vanessa looked directly at the camera.
Not accidentally.
Directly.
She knew where it was.
And she smiled.
Marcus froze.
The room froze.
Vanessa had known.
She had performed for the cameras.
She wanted the footage to exist.
But why?
The video continued.
Vanessa picked up her phone.
She recorded Nia crying.
Then she said something quietly.
Something Marcus almost missed.
“Now he’ll have no choice.””
Marcus paused the video.
His heart started racing.
“No choice for what?””
Nobody answered.
He looked at Vanessa.
“What were you trying to make me do?””
Vanessa remained silent.
Then her phone rang.
Everyone looked at it.
The screen lit up.
Marcus saw the name.
Ava saw it too.
And she whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
Marcus picked up the phone.
The caller was someone who should not have been calling.
Someone who had been gone for years.
Someone whose name Marcus had not seen since the day Nia’s mother died.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
Because the caller ID displayed:
*ELENA.*
His dead wife’s name.
May you like
And beneath it was a message preview:
*I know what Vanessa did to my daughter. I’m ready to tell the truth.*
