Chapter 6: The Truth Elena Left Behind

Marcus read the letter three times.

The words did not change.

The handwriting did not disappear.

The truth did not become easier.

*Marcus, if you are reading this, then Vanessa failed to keep you from finding me.*

His fingers tightened around the paper.

Caleb watched him carefully.

“What does it say?””

Marcus continued reading.

**I’m sorry. I’m sorry for every birthday I missed. Every night Nia cried.

Every moment you thought I chose to leave. I didn’t.**

Marcus stopped.

His vision blurred.

He forced himself to continue.

*The night of the accident, I discovered something about Vanessa. Something she would never let me reveal.*

The room became silent.

Nia was sitting on the floor beside the doorway.

Listening.

Marcus looked at her.

He wanted to stop.

He wanted to protect her.

But this was her story too.

He kept reading.

*Vanessa had been taking money from my company account. Not stealing small amounts. Thousands. She knew I found out.*

Marcus looked up.

Caleb whispered:

“What?””

Marcus continued.

*When I confronted her, she threatened me. She told me nobody would believe me because everyone already thought she was the perfect friend.*

Friend.

Marcus stopped.

Friend.

Not just Vanessa.

Elena’s friend.

The realization hit him.

Before Vanessa was his wife, she was Elena’s closest friend.

The person who had comforted him after Elena’s “death.””

The person who had helped him rebuild.

The person who had slowly entered their lives.

Marcus felt sick.

*The accident wasn’t random.*

His hands shook.

*Vanessa arranged for my car to be followed. She wanted to scare me into silence. But things went wrong.*

Marcus looked at the page.

The next line was darker.

*I survived. Barely. But when I woke up, Vanessa was there.*

The room went completely silent.

Nia stopped crying.

Marcus could barely breathe.

*She told me Marcus and Nia were safer without me. She told me if I returned, she would destroy you both.*

Marcus closed his eyes.

For seven years.

Seven years.

Elena had been alive.

And afraid.

The next sentence broke him.

*I watched from a distance because Vanessa convinced me she would hurt Nia if I came back.*

Marcus lowered the letter.

Nia looked at him.

“Dad?””

He swallowed.

“Your mom loved you.””

The little girl’s face collapsed.

“She did?””

“Yes.””

The tears came instantly.

“She really did?””

Marcus nodded.

“She never left you.””

Nia covered her mouth.

A sound escaped her.

Not a scream.

Not a cry.

Something deeper.

The sound of a child finally hearing the truth she had waited years to hear.

Marcus pulled her into his arms.

Behind them, Caleb quietly wiped his eyes.

Then Ava appeared.

She had been standing there.

Listening.

“I knew it.””

Everyone looked at her.

Ava stepped inside.

“I knew Mom was lying.””

Marcus stood.

“What do you mean?””

Ava looked ashamed.

“After Elena disappeared, Mom changed.””

“How?””

“She stopped talking about her like she was sad.””

Ava swallowed.

“She talked about her like she had won.””

Marcus felt anger move through him.

Ava continued.

“She told someone once, ‘Some people don’t know when they’ve lost.’”

“Who was she talking to?””

Ava shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Then Marcus’s phone buzzed.

Another message.

The same unknown number.

*You found the letter. Good. Now find the recording.*

Marcus stared.

A second message appeared.

*The one Vanessa never wanted you to hear.*

His heart raced.

Recording.

Another secret.

Another weapon.

He typed quickly.

*Who are you?*

The reply came almost immediately.

*Someone who helped Elena survive.*

Marcus looked at the letter.

Then at the hidden room.

Then at Vanessa’s office.

“She’s still here.””

Everyone froze.

“What?”” Caleb asked.

Marcus looked toward the hallway.

“Vanessa didn’t leave.””

He checked the security cameras.

The footage showed the driveway.

Her car was still there.

But the front door camera showed something else.

Vanessa had left the house.

Minutes earlier.

Alone.

Marcus stared.

“Where did she go?””

Then he saw it.

The final camera angle.

The backyard.

A figure standing near the old garden shed.

Vanessa.

Holding something.

Marcus zoomed in.

A small recording device.

The same kind she had used earlier.

Only this time…

She wasn’t recording him.

She was recording someone else.

Marcus grabbed his jacket.

“Dad?”” Nia asked.

He turned.

For a moment, he wanted to tell her to stay.

But he knew hiding the truth had already destroyed enough lives.

“I’m going to bring your mother home.””

Nia’s eyes widened.

“My mom?””

Marcus nodded.

“If she’s waiting for us…”

He looked toward the backyard.

“…we’re done letting Vanessa decide our family’s future.””

He opened the back door.

Cold night air rushed inside.

And then he heard Vanessa’s voice from the garden.

Quiet.

Desperate.

Talking to someone on the recording.

“After tonight, Marcus will never find out what really happened.””

Marcus stopped.

Because another voice answered.

A man’s voice.

One he recognized instantly.

May you like

And the words that followed made him realize Vanessa’s plan was much bigger than he ever imagined.

“Don’t worry, Vanessa. Once Marcus is gone, Nia will belong to us.””
