Chapter 11: The Person Behind The Plan

The name on the document stayed in Marcus’s mind.

Elena’s father.

A man Marcus had met only a few times.

A respected businessman.

A man everyone described as honorable.

But the numbers told a different story.

Marcus looked at the financial records again.

Transfers.

Hidden accounts.

Payments.

Years of movement.

“This doesn’t make sense.””

Elena sat down slowly.

“My father died before Vanessa disappeared.””

The officer looked at her.

“Are you sure?””

Elena nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at the papers.

“Then someone was using his accounts.””

The officer nodded.

“That’s what it appears.””

A cold feeling moved through Marcus.

Because this was no longer just about Vanessa.

Vanessa was a piece.

Daniel was a piece.

Someone else had been moving them.

Using them.

The officer pointed to one transaction.

“This payment was made three months before the accident.””

Marcus looked.

The amount was enormous.

The recipient name was hidden.

But there was a reference note.

A single phrase.

*Project Return.*

Elena’s face changed.

“What?””

Marcus noticed.

“You know that phrase?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

But her reaction said otherwise.

“Tell me.””

Elena looked toward the window.

“When I was investigating the company accounts, I found a folder with that name.””

“What was inside?””

She swallowed.

“I never opened it.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa found me before I could.””

Marcus stared.

“She knew about it?””

“Yes.””

The officer wrote something down.

“Where is this folder now?””

Elena looked at Marcus.

“I don’t know.””

Then everyone heard a noise.

A phone vibrating.

Marcus looked around.

It was Vanessa’s phone.

An unknown number.

The officer picked it up.

Everyone watched as a message appeared.

*You failed.*

A second message came.

*You should have listened when I told you to disappear.*

Marcus looked at Elena.

The color drained from her face.

She recognized the message.

“Who?””

Elena whispered:

“Him.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Who?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“My father’s business partner.””

The officer looked confused.

“Your father’s business partner died too.””

Elena nodded.

“That’s what everyone thought.””

Marcus felt exhausted by the number of impossible truths.

“Who is still alive?””

Elena looked at him.

“Richard Vale.””

The name meant nothing to Marcus.

But it meant something to Elena.

Fear.

Real fear.

“He controlled everything.””

“Everything?””

“My father’s company. The accounts. The people around us.””

Marcus looked at the phone.

“So Vanessa and Daniel were working for him?””

Elena nodded slowly.

“I think so.””

A new message arrived.

This time with an image.

The officer opened it.

Everyone stared.

It was a photograph.

Taken inside the Carter house.

Today.

A picture of Marcus holding Nia.

Taken from outside.

The caption:

*I’m closer than you think.*

Marcus immediately stood.

“Lock the doors.””

The officer moved quickly.

Everyone checked the windows.

The house suddenly felt different.

Not safe.

Watched.

Nia appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Dad?””

Marcus looked up.

His expression softened instantly.

“Go back upstairs, sweetheart.””

“Is something wrong?””

He wanted to lie.

He almost did.

But he remembered.

Lies were how they got here.

So he said:

“Someone dangerous is trying to scare us.””

Nia gripped the railing.

“Is Mom safe?””

Elena looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Are you sure?””

Elena paused.

That hesitation scared Marcus.

Because Elena had survived seven years.

She knew fear.

She knew danger.

And she knew when something was wrong.

The officer checked the backyard.

Then returned.

“No one is outside.””

Marcus looked at the photo again.

Taken from somewhere close.

Very close.

The officer pointed.

“There’s something strange.””

“What?””

“The photo metadata.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What about it?””

“It wasn’t sent from far away.””

A pause.

“It was sent from inside the neighborhood.””

The room went silent.

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

Inside the neighborhood.

Someone nearby.

Someone watching.

Then Nia whispered:

“Dad…”

Everyone looked.

She pointed toward the front window.

A shadow moved outside.

The officer immediately reached for his radio.

Marcus stepped forward.

The figure stopped.

Then slowly walked into the light.

Marcus recognized him.

And his heart sank.

Because the man standing outside wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone he trusted.

Someone who had hugged Nia.

Someone who had attended family dinners.

Someone who had been helping them search for answers.

The officer opened the door carefully.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at Marcus.

Then at Elena.

And whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus stared.

“Why are you here?””

The man looked down.

“Because Richard Vale knows you found the truth.””

Elena stepped forward.

“How do you know that name?””

The man swallowed.

“Because I work for him.””

Marcus felt every muscle tense.

The man raised his hands.

“But I’m not here to hurt you.””

“Then why are you here?””

He looked directly at Nia.

“To save her.””

Marcus didn’t move.

The man continued:

“Because Richard’s real plan was never about money.””

A chill went through the room.

“What was it about?””

The man looked at Elena.

May you like

Then at Marcus.

“He wanted Nia.””
