Chapter 9 - THE TRAITOR IN OUR MIDST

I gathered my entire team that evening. Twelve people I had known for years. Men I had trusted with my life. And Lily's. And Grace's.

I stood before them with the unfamiliar signature in one hand and the message from the lake house in the other.

"Someone here is working for Arthur," I said quietly. "Someone gave him the hospital access codes. Someone told us the wrong shift times. Someone has been leaking every move we make from the very beginning."

Silence. Tense. Heavy.

"If you are that person," I continued, "step forward now. Tell me who Arthur answers to. Tell me where the documents are. And I will ensure your family is protected. Refuse... and when Arthur falls, you fall with him. Hard."

No one moved.

I looked at each face in turn. The captain I had known since my father's time. The two senior guards. The tech specialist. The logistics coordinator. All trusted. All vetted. All with clean backgrounds.

Except one.

My second-in-command. Julian. The man I had sent to the lake house. The man who had called me with the message. The man who had authorized the shift rosters at the hospital.

I looked straight at him.

"You searched the lake house," I said. "You said it was empty except for the message. But you never sent me a photograph of the handwriting. Why?"

Julian didn't flinch. "Signal was bad, sir. I told you."

"And the doctor who signed Grace's medication change," I pressed. "He works at your former clinic. Your brother-in-law. Correct?"

The room went dead silent.

Julian took a step backward. Hand drifting toward his weapon.

"That is a coincidence," he said. Too fast. Too sharp.

"Is it?" I pulled out the ledger page Arthur had kept. The payment record dated six months earlier. Monthly retainer — J.W. — for access and updates.

I tossed it onto the table.

Julian paled.

"You joined me exactly six months ago," I said. "Recommended by Arthur himself. 'Trusted. Competent. Fully vetted.' Those were his words. And I accepted them. Because I trusted Arthur. Just like you knew I would."

Julian's hand settled on his gun.

"He pays better than you ever could," Julian said. No more pretense. Cold. Flat. "And he promised my family safety. Something you could never guarantee."

"He poisoned Grace," I said. "He nearly killed her."

"He gave me an order," Julian said. "I follow orders."

"And when Arthur kills me? And Lily? And Victoria? And everyone else standing in his way? What then? Does he keep his promises?"

Julian hesitated. Just for a heartbeat.

"I do what I must."

"Then you choose to die with him," I said.

I signaled. The other eleven men moved instantly. Surrounding him. Weapons drawn before he could clear his holster. Julian looked around. Realized he was trapped.

"You won't get anything from me," he spat as they secured his hands. "Arthur is already steps ahead. The jet leaves at dawn. Grace will be dead by morning. You... you will be arrested for the murder of your daughter before the sun sets tomorrow."

My blood ran cold.

"What did you say?"

Julian smiled. A terrible, knowing smile.

"He isn't going to kill Lily himself. He is going to make it look like you did it. In a rage. Over Grace. You kill Lily. Then yourself. End of story. Arthur grieves. Collects everything. And no one asks questions."

I stepped forward. Grabbed Julian by the collar.

"Where is he taking her? Lily is with a friend! He doesn't know where she is!"

Julian laughed.

"Doesn't he?"

The realization hit me like a sledgehammer. The friend I had left Lily with... had been recommended by Julian. Weeks earlier. A trusted contact. Fully vetted.

Arthur knew exactly where she was.
