Chapter 19 - THE FINAL THREAT AND THE PROTECTIVE CIRCLE

The next weeks were tense beyond measure. Security around our home was tripled. Police patrols increased. Private guards watched every entrance. Every vehicle. Every approaching stranger.

Letters arrived. Threatening. Obscene. We handed them all over to investigators.

Grace received a package containing a single white lily—Elena's favorite flower—with no note.

Lily drew a picture at school and told me, "A nice man asked me to give you a message. He said 'Voss remembers.'"

I held my daughter's shoulders. "What else did he say, Lily?"

"He said... tell your daddy that promises can be broken. And that accidents happen to little girls too."

I reported the incident immediately. The man was described. Sketches circulated. But no one matched. He had vanished into thin air.

The night before the trial began, I gathered everyone in the living room. Grace. Margaret. Lily. Victoria—who had been moved to safe house custody to protect her from Voss's reach. My lawyers. The lead prosecutor. Security commanders.

"They want us terrified," I said. "They want us to wake up every morning wondering if today is the day. They want us to stay silent out of fear. But we are not alone. We have evidence. We have the truth. We have a growing list of witnesses willing to come forward once Voss is exposed. And we have each other."

I looked at Victoria.

"Are you still prepared to testify?"

Victoria looked at Lily. Then at Grace. Then at me.

"Yes," she said firmly. "Let him try to silence me. Let him try to silence all of us. If we go down... we take him with us. Every name. Every crime. Every secret."

Grace reached out and took Victoria's hand. Then mine. Then Margaret's. We stood there in a circle, bound together by loss, by courage, and by the absolute refusal to surrender.

"Whatever happens tomorrow," Grace said quietly, "we face it together."
