Chapter 13 - THE CONFESSION AND THE TURNING POINT

Three days later. Grace opened her eyes.
She was still weak. Still in pain. Still heavily bandaged. But she recognized me the moment I stepped into the room. And she smiled.
Lily ran to the bedside and climbed carefully onto the mattress. "I'm safe, Mommy. Daddy got me back."
Grace looked at me, questions in her eyes. I pulled a chair close and told her everything. The truth about my mother. About Arthur. About Margaret. About the deal I had struck.
Grace listened in silence. When I finished, she reached out and touched my hand.
"She is your mother, Nathan. That makes this harder for you than any of us."
"It doesn't matter," I said. "She chose her path. And I choose mine. The path that protects you. That protects Lily. That honors Elena. And my father."
Grace squeezed my fingers gently. "Your father would be proud. Elena too. You stood up to evil... even when it wore your own mother's face."
Later that same afternoon, Victoria requested a meeting.
She sat across from me in the visiting room, looking pale but resolute. She pushed a sealed envelope across the table.
"I spoke to my lawyer this morning," she said. "And to the district attorney. I am prepared to testify. Fully. Against Arthur. And against your mother."
I stared at her. "You know what that means. She is my family. She will fight back with everything."
"She sent me to kill Grace and Lily," Victoria said, her voice steady. "She told me Elena deserved to die. She laughed when I reported your father's death. She used me, Nathan. Destroyed my life. And she would have destroyed you too. She is not untouchable. And I intend to help you prove it."
"Arthur will be there too," I warned. "He knows everything. He will testify against you in return."
"Let him," Victoria said. "I have nothing left to lose. But you... you have everything to gain. Justice. Closure. Peace for your daughter. And for Elena."
I broke the seal on the envelope. Inside was a signed, sworn affidavit detailing every instruction, every threat, every payment—traced directly back to my mother and Arthur. Dates. Times. Locations. Witnesses. Victoria had laid it all out.
"Why?" I asked. "After everything... why do this for me?"
Victoria looked down at her hands.
"Because I realized something," she said quietly. "Elena wasn't the villain. Grace wasn't the villain. You weren't the villain. We were. Arthur. Me. Your mother. We hated and schemed and killed for a fortune none of us truly earned. And in the end... Elena's child is the only innocent thing among us. Lily deserves the truth. She deserves a world where monsters do not win."
She looked up. Her eyes were bright with unshed tears.
"I loved you once, Nathan. Truly loved you. And I let jealousy turn me into something terrible. This... this is the only way I know how to apologize. The only way I know how to make amends."
I folded the affidavit carefully.
"Thank you, Victoria."
"Don't thank me," she said. "Just promise me one thing. When it is all over... when they are finally behind bars... tell Lily about Elena. Tell her her mother was brave. And good. And loved her more than anything."
"I promise," I said.
I stood to leave. At the doorway, Victoria spoke one last time.

"Arthur knows we are coming. And he knows your mother will never surrender. Be careful, Nathan. Cornered people... do desperate things."
