Chapter 3 - THE FIRST CLUE AND THE FATHER'S VOICE

We spent the next three days in a safe house on the edge of the city. No one knew the address except my most trusted security chief and my personal lawyer. I changed all my passwords. Transferred all liquid assets into accounts only I could access. And filed the legal paperwork officially naming me as Lily's father.
But Arthur remained silent. No more texts. No more threats. Nothing.
That silence worried me more than anything.
On the fourth morning, I decided to go through my father's things. He had died three years earlier, leaving Arthur as executor and trustee. I had always accepted his death as natural causes. Now... I needed to know.
I drove to the family estate. The house was quiet. Full of memories. Full of things I had never bothered to examine closely. I spent hours in my father's study. Reading letters. Reviewing old files. Going through business records. Most were mundane.
Then I found a locked metal box tucked behind a row of leather-bound books.
I pried it open.
Inside were handwritten journals. My father's. Dated the final year of his life.
I sat down and began to read.
The entries grew more frantic as the months passed. References to embezzled funds. Partnership agreements altered without his knowledge. Arthur acting alone. Making decisions. Moving money. Threatening to ruin people.
Then, weeks before his death:
*Arthur knows about Elena. He knows she is pregnant. He says she is dangerous. That the child could ruin everything. I told him I would not allow harm to come to her. He looked at me... as if I had already signed my own death warrant. I fear Arthur is capable of anything. If anything happens to me... find Elena. Protect the child. Arthur will stop at nothing to ensure his own claim remains unchallenged.*
My hands trembled as I read the final entry, written the day before my father died:
*He has threatened me. Arthur told me that blood means nothing. That money and power are the only things that matter. If you are reading this, Nathan... I am already gone. Trust no one. Not the police. Not our friends. Not anyone Arthur recommends. Arthur killed me. And he will kill anyone standing between him and what he wants. Grace is the only person who knows the truth about Elena. Find her. Protect her. Protect the child. And above all else... do not let Arthur know you suspect him. He will destroy you too.*
I closed the journal slowly.
My father hadn't died of natural causes. He had been murdered. Just like Elena. And Arthur had stood at both funerals, weeping crocodile tears, while planning the exact same fate for Grace and Lily and me.
I put the journal in my bag. Every suspicion hardened into absolute certainty. Arthur had killed my father. Arranged Elena's accident. Placed Grace in my home under his thumb. Ordered Victoria to eliminate the threat. He had been pulling every string from the very beginning.
I drove back to the safe house with darkness gathering all around me. Grace met me at the door, her expression worried. Lily was coloring at the kitchen table, bright and happy and completely innocent of the war being waged around her.
"You found something," Grace said quietly, seeing my face.
I showed her the journal. She read it sitting on the sofa, one hand pressed over her mouth. When she finished, tears were streaming down her face.
"He told me," she whispered. "Elena told me your father suspected. That he was going to expose Arthur. That was why Arthur had to silence him. To keep the fortune. To keep his secrets."
"And then Arthur made certain Elena died before she could tell me about Lily," I said. "Years later, when Victoria found out... Arthur sent her to finish what he started. Three lives erased. One clean accident. And Arthur walks away with fifty million dollars."
Grace looked toward Lily. Her voice was barely audible.
"He has been planning this for years. Every step. Every move. We are exactly where he wants us. Cornered. Scared. Running."
I looked at my daughter. At the girl who held up a drawing with three stick figures and big grinning faces. At the girl who had no idea her existence made her a target for murder.
"No," I said. "We are not running anymore. He made one mistake. He underestimated what I would do for my child. And he left a witness. You."
Grace went pale.
"He will kill me too, Nathan. If I testify..."
"He can't kill you if he's already in custody," I said. "And we have proof. My father's journal. Victoria's confession. The DNA report. Your testimony. Everything linking Arthur to the threats, the cover-ups, the deaths."
Grace stood up slowly. She walked to the window and stared out at the quiet street.
"Victoria will never testify against him. She is terrified of him. She believes he can reach her anywhere. Even in prison."
"Then we make Victoria realize Arthur will sacrifice her the moment it serves his purpose," I said. "He sent her to do the job. He left her holding the weapon. He never intended to protect her. Victoria was never anything more to him than a disposable pawn."
Grace turned to look at me. A slow, terrible understanding dawned in her eyes.
"And if Victoria realizes that... she will turn on him to save herself."
"Exactly," I said. "Tomorrow morning, I go to the jail. I tell Victoria the truth. I show her exactly what Arthur did. And then I give her a choice. Spend the rest of her life in prison for crimes she didn't mastermind... or help us bring him down."
Grace walked over and placed her good hand on my arm.
"Be careful, Nathan. Victoria is desperate. And desperate people make unpredictable choices. She could lie. She could betray you to win favor with him. She could tell Arthur exactly what we are planning before you even finish speaking."
"She might," I said. "But I have to try. Because right now... Arthur holds all the cards. And we have to take them away from him one by one."
That night, I lay awake on the sofa while Lily slept in the bedroom and Grace sat in the chair beside her bed. I stared at the ceiling. At the shadows. At the realization that the man who had been my godfather, my father's best friend, my trusted advisor... was a cold-blooded killer who had murdered my father and the woman I loved, and was now hunting my daughter.
But as I drifted toward sleep, one thought kept circling through my mind. My father's journal hadn't just warned me. It had given me hope. It had given me proof. And it had told me exactly who to trust.
Grace.
My father had written her name. He had trusted her. And he had been right.

Tomorrow I would face Victoria. Tomorrow I would risk everything. But tonight... I knew one thing for certain. I was no longer fighting alone.
