Chapter 14 - THE ARREST AND THE SILENT GOODBYE

The arrests happened at dawn.

Simultaneous raids. My mother at her estate. Arthur at a secondary residence he had been using. Warrants signed at the highest level. Charges filed: conspiracy to commit murder, racketeering, fraud, embezzlement, and a dozen more.

I watched from a distance as officers stepped through the grand front doors of my childhood home. I watched them lead my mother out in handcuffs. She walked with her head high. Her posture perfect. She did not look at the cameras. She did not look at me.

Arthur was arrested an hour later. He offered no resistance. When they read him his rights, he simply nodded and walked quietly to the vehicle.

The news broke within hours. Headlines everywhere. Scandal. Murder. High society names dragged through the mud. I stayed silent. Made no statements. Issued no comments. Let the evidence speak. Let the facts unfold.

Three days later, Arthur sent a letter to the jail where Victoria was being held. She forwarded it to me.

*I did what I was told. I served the family faithfully for thirty years. Eleanor gave the orders. I carried them out. That is the truth. But I will not testify against her. I will take my secrets to the grave. And so will she. You may have won the battle, Nathan. But the war never truly ends. There are others. More dangerous. More patient. Watch your back.*

I burned the letter. Arthur was protecting her to the very end. And his warning chilled me to the bone. There are others.

Grace was moved to a secure private facility. Guards remained posted. Lily stayed close. Margaret moved in to help, becoming the aunt Lily never knew she had but immediately loved. Slowly, very slowly, we began to breathe again.

But Arthur's words echoed in my mind. Over and over.

May you like

Watch your back.
