Chapter 10 - THE MIDPOINT REVELATION AND THE SHOCKING CONNECTION

I drove faster than I had ever driven in my life. Sirens screamed behind me. But nothing compared to the scream inside my own head.
Julian had recommended the woman. Margaret. Kind. Warm. Retired teacher. References checked. Background clean. All provided by Julian. All approved by Arthur. All a lie.
I burst through the front door of Margaret's house minutes later. It was quiet. Too quiet. No sign of struggle. No sign of anyone. On the kitchen table lay a single envelope. Addressed to me.
My hands shook as I opened it.
*Dear Nathan,*
*By the time you read this, Lily is safe. For now. She is with me. I took her because Arthur told me to. But he made one mistake. He never told me why.*
*I read the files Julian left behind. I learned about Elena. About Grace. About your father. About everything Arthur intends to do. And I realized... I am Elena's sister. Lily's great-aunt. Arthur paid me to befriend you. To gain your trust. To be ready when the moment came to take her. But I cannot hurt the child my sister died to protect.*
*Arthur is not who you think he is. He killed your father because your father discovered the truth. Arthur is not acting alone. He never has. He works for your mother, Nathan. Your own mother. She orchestrated everything. Your father's death. Elena's accident. Grace's silence. Lily's removal. Everything.*
*She despised Elena. She despised the idea of an illegitimate child inheriting anything. She told Arthur to eliminate every threat. Including Lily. Arthur does her bidding. Always.*
*Meet me at the warehouse district. Midnight. Come alone. Bring the ledger. Bring everything you have. And I will bring Lily. We make the trade. And together... we end this. Once and for all.*
*Margaret.*
I stood frozen in that empty kitchen. The world as I knew it shattered completely.
My mother.
The woman who held me as a baby. Who comforted me when Elena died. Who stood at my wedding and told Victoria she was the daughter she never had.
She had ordered every death. Every accident. Every threat. She had used Arthur as her weapon. She had destroyed Elena. Hunted Grace. Tried to murder her own granddaughter. All to keep a fortune pure. All to ensure nothing illegitimate tainted the bloodline.
My own mother.
I sank into a chair. Head in hands. Everything made sense now. Arthur's loyalty. His confidence. His resources. His protection. He answered to the one person I would never have suspected. The one person no one would ever investigate.
She had been pulling every string from the very beginning.
May you like
And tonight... I walked into her trap. With nothing but the truth and a desperate need to save my daughter.
