Chapter 18 - THE DECISION AND THE PUBLIC STAND

I went home and told Grace everything. Every word. Every threat. Every promise of safety in exchange for silence.

She sat quietly listening, her face pale, hands folded tightly in her lap. When I finished, she looked up at me.

"He believes we are afraid. That we will take his money and stay quiet."

"He is counting on it," I said. "Because silence is safe. And fighting him... could mean our deaths."

Grace stood up and walked to where Lily lay sleeping on the sofa. She brushed hair gently from the child's face.

"Elena knew Voss was dangerous," she said softly. "She chose to speak anyway. Your father knew. He chose to speak anyway. If we stay silent... then their deaths were for nothing. If we stay silent... Lily inherits a world where men like Julian Voss decide who lives and who dies. I will not raise my daughter in fear. Will you?"

I looked at the woman I loved. At the woman who had endured beatings, poison, and attempts on her life without ever bending. And then at my daughter. The reason we were fighting in the first place.

"No," I said. "I will not."

The next morning, I called a press conference.

I did not name Julian Voss directly. Not yet. But I spoke clearly. About the conspiracy. About the larger network pulling strings. About the threats made to silence us. About the choice we had been offered: silence in exchange for safety.

"I reject that choice," I told the cameras. "Silence is what allows evil to endure. We will testify. We will present every piece of evidence. And we will name every single person involved. No matter how powerful. No matter how protected. No matter what the cost."

When the reporter asked if I feared retaliation, I looked straight into the lens.

"We are not afraid," I said. "Because we stand for something they cannot buy. Truth. And eventually... truth always wins."

That evening, the lead prosecutor called me. Voice grim.

"You made powerful enemies today, Nathan. Voss is furious. He considers this a declaration of war. Be on your guard. At all times. We have credible intelligence that he intends to make good on his threats."

"I know," I said. "And we are ready."
