Chapter 16 - THE SHADOW ALLIANCE AND THE HIDDEN FILES

I returned to the family estate. Sealed since the arrests. Walking through those halls felt like walking through a tomb. Full of lies. Full of ghosts.

I went straight to my mother's private study. The room had been searched by police. But they had looked for records. Documents. Physical evidence. They had not looked for what she might have hidden where no one would ever think to look.

I pulled out old family photo albums. Stacked on a high shelf. Untouched.

I flipped through them. Decades of history. Weddings. Holidays. Celebrations. My father. My mother. Arthur. And repeatedly... that same man. Standing slightly apart. Never named. Never labeled. Always watching.

I pulled out a magnifying glass. Examined a photograph taken the year before my father died. In the background, on the terrace. My father arguing with the silver-haired man. My father looked angry. The silver-haired man looked calm.

Tucked into the back cover of the album was a single slip of paper. Handwritten. My father's handwriting.

*If anything happens to me... find Julian Voss. He knows the truth. He knows who pulls all the strings. Trust no one else. Not even family.*

Julian Voss. The man in the photograph. The man outside the courthouse.

Arthur hadn't been working for my mother alone. She and Arthur had both been answering to someone higher. Someone named Julian Voss.

I took the note to Grace that evening. She read it twice. Her face went pale.

"I've heard Elena speak that name once," she whispered. "Shortly before she died. She said... 'Voss is the real danger. He is the one Arthur truly fears. He is the one with the power to erase us all.' I asked her what she meant. She told me to forget she ever said it. That speaking the name aloud was dangerous."

"So my mother and Arthur are merely fronts," I said, the pieces clicking horribly into place. "Voss provides the money. The protection. The influence. My mother and Arthur do what he tells them to keep it. When my father discovered Voss existed... he had to be silenced. Elena learned the name... she had to be silenced too."

Grace reached out and gripped my hand.

"This changes everything, Nathan. We aren't fighting just your mother and Arthur anymore. We are fighting a man powerful enough to control them both. A man they fear more than prison."

"Which explains why Arthur refused to testify," I said. "Why he said 'there are others.' He wasn't protecting my mother. He was terrified of Julian Voss."

Grace stood up and walked to the window. The sun was setting. Casting long shadows across the lawn.

"If this is true... then our lives are still in danger. Even with Arthur and your mother in jail. Voss has resources. Connections. Influence. He can reach inside prisons. Courts. Police forces. He can make evidence vanish. Witnesses vanish."

I stood up beside her.

"Then we make certain he cannot touch us. We go public. With everything. Including the name Julian Voss. We drag him into the light where he cannot hide."

Grace turned slowly. Her eyes filled with dread.

"Nathan... if you do that... he will have no choice but to silence you. Permanently."

"Better to die fighting than live afraid," I said. "My father thought that. Elena thought that. And I believe it too."
