Chapter 2 - THE WARNING AND THE SILENCE

The police took Victoria away. Grace was taken to the hospital to have her shoulder examined and x-rayed. I stayed with Lily in the waiting room, holding her hand, feeling completely undone by everything. She fell asleep curled against my side somewhere around midnight, trusting me completely while I barely knew how to breathe.
When Grace returned with her arm in a sling, looking exhausted but steady, I stood up.
"Fractured," she said quietly. "Three weeks in this."
"I'm so sorry," I said. "Grace... I don't even know where to begin. All this time. All of it. Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
Grace looked at Lily, sleeping peacefully in the plastic waiting room chair, then motioned for me to step away into the quiet hallway.
"Because Arthur found me first," she said, her voice low and tight. "The day Elena died. He came to me. Told me exactly what would happen if anyone ever learned the truth about Lily. He said Elena's accident was a warning. That she had been foolish enough to try to cross them. And that if I valued my life or the child's... I would disappear. Or take a job far beneath my station and keep my mouth shut."
My blood ran cold.
"You took the job here... because Arthur told you to?"
"I took it because it was the only way to stay close without raising suspicion," Grace said. "Victoria didn't know at first. Arthur never told her who I was. He just placed me here to keep an eye on things. To make sure Lily stayed healthy and quiet. But Victoria found out anyway. She intercepted a letter meant for me. Found the birth certificate copy. And yesterday... she went to Arthur. He told her to handle it. Permanently."
I leaned back against the wall, staring at the ceiling. So Arthur had known all along. He had placed Grace in my house. He had watched Lily grow up. He had held the truth over all of us like a loaded gun.
"And you never said a word," I said. "All this time. Watching me marry her. Watching Victoria live in my home while you cleaned it and cared for my child in secret. You endured all of that to keep Lily alive."
Grace's eyes glistened.
"Elena begged me to protect her, Nathan. She told me Arthur and Victoria would destroy anyone standing between them and that trust fund. She said... she said they would kill Lily to keep her from inheriting. I believed her. And then... after I met you... and I saw the kind of man you were... I realized I was protecting Lily from them. But I was also protecting you. From them."
The weight of it settled heavy in my chest. Every quiet moment. Every time Grace looked away when Victoria kissed me. Every time she hurried Lily out of the room when Arthur came to visit. She hadn't been avoiding me. She had been keeping us both safe.
"He will come after her," Grace said, voice trembling but resolute. "Victoria failed. But Arthur won't stop. He will see Lily as a threat to everything he believes belongs to him. And he has enough money, lawyers, and corrupt friends to make her vanish before she ever sees a cent."
I looked through the doorway at my daughter. At the girl who had called me Daddy and changed my entire life in a single breath.
"Let him try," I said quietly. "I have the DNA report. I have Victoria's confession. I have Grace's testimony. Arthur can't just—"
Grace reached out and gripped my forearm. Her fingers were cold.
"You don't understand. Arthur doesn't care about evidence. He cares about the law he can buy. And the law is written in such a way... that if something happens to Lily... the trust defaults to Victoria. And if something happens to Victoria... it defaults to Arthur."
I stared at her.
"He needs both of them dead?"
Grace nodded slowly.
"And you, too. Because you would fight him. He knows you would. That is why he kept this hidden for four years. Waiting. Biding his time. Until he could arrange for all three of you to disappear in one terrible, convenient tragedy."
The realization hit me like a physical blow. The cancelled meeting. The rescheduled calls. Victoria waiting at home with a hockey stick. None of it was random. Arthur had orchestrated my early return. Or perhaps he had simply ensured Victoria would be alone with Grace and Lily long enough to finish the job.
"He knows I survived," I said, straightening up. "He knows Victoria is in custody. He knows the truth is coming out."
"Which means he has no reason to wait," Grace said. "He will move faster now. Before you can legally establish paternity. Before you can name Lily as an heir. Before anyone can officially recognize she exists."
I pulled out my phone and called my lawyer. I woke him up. Told him to file emergency paternity documents first thing in the morning. To get Lily's name on every legal record immediately. To lock down the trust so no one—not Arthur, not Victoria, not anyone—could alter it without multiple levels of verification and my personal signature.
Then I called my head of security. Told him to double the guards. To put armed protection at the hospital entrances. To watch every vehicle approaching. To keep eyes on Arthur Sterling's home and office.
When I hung up, Grace was watching me carefully.
"You believe me," she said, almost as if she were surprised.
"I do," I said. "Because everything Victoria said tonight. Everything she did. It all points straight to him. And I intend to prove it."
Grace looked at Lily sleeping. Her face soft and peaceful. Completely unaware that a monster was hunting her simply because she existed.
"Be careful, Nathan," Grace whispered. "Arthur has spent thirty years building his power. He doesn't fight fair. He fights dirty. And he always hits when you least expect it."
Before I could reply, my phone buzzed. An unknown number. A text message appeared on screen.
*TELL GRACE TO KEEP QUIET. THE GIRL IS A MISTAKE THAT CAN STILL BE CORRECTED. ONE ACCIDENT SOLVES EVERYTHING. DON'T TEST ME.*
My blood turned to ice. I showed the message to Grace. She went pale.
"He knows where we are," she whispered.
"He has people watching us," I said. "Which means we don't go home. Not tonight. Not anywhere predictable."
I grabbed my coat. Scooped up a still-sleeping Lily. Helped Grace to her feet.

"We move," I said. "Right now. And we stay one step ahead of him. Every single day until this is finished."
